Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Nicol with 4 do you mean how much will the city tile produce depending on where its settled?
The rule is actually quite simple: a city will produce 2:food: 1:hammers: 1:commerce: unless the base yield is greater than one of these values. E.g. A plains hill has 2:hammers: so the city tile will have this if you settle on it, or grass corn has 3:food: so the city tile will too. The only exception is flood plains - settling on them removes them so you don't get the extra food.

ok lol thats clears it up------- i knew this rule, but in nobles game i sttled on FP and was dismayd to see only 2 food

ok, now I am really confused.
how come Julius Caesar is still trading with Egypt.
I have him completely surrounded and I have no open borders with egypt.
I have open borders with all other civilizations.

I dont think I would be able to trade if I am completely surrounded by enemy?
can it be bug in the buffy glance tab?
or bug in the unusual nonwrapping oasis map?

Having never played with that map type or with Buffy I can't comment on any bugs or strange characteristics that they might have. However, it seems to me that if one of those two civs have open borders with you then they can travel through your land to carry out trade with the other civ. So those two civs can trade with each other. If you want to prevent that then you need to close your borders to both other parties. At least, that seems logical to me.

Discovering the Tech obsolete's benefits for the Civ that has made the Tech Advance. If you achieved the Tech and say Nappy has the Wonder your discovery has no effect on his wonder, it only effects your wonders/buildings.

If your not giving up to much, you can always trade the tech to him, forcing the issue and making his stuff obsolete.

Oh, that's cleverly mean, I like it. You get the diplomatic bonus and his wonders cease to function. Why have I never thought of that?!?

I actually did it to myself many moons ago in a vanilla game when it was first released. When I returned to the game with BtS last year I rediscovered a lot. Much of it through this site. I believe if you search this specific thread you will find alot of information on this subject, and Sisutil's Beginner and Intermediate guides cover this along with many other useful tactics and gambits.

i am already beynd needing beginners guides.

I understand what your saying, however you may want to consider taking a quick peek at one or both of those in between games. Both of them are short and cover important strategies for improving the game and experience. They both have useful tips and tactics for various levels using some common game parameters. Don't let the titles fool you into thinking they only apply to folks that are new to the game or it's expansions.

This web site, and this thread in particular, are awesome resources, especially when your in the middle of a game, and need a quick answer to something, the Strategy Articles help to fine tune the advice received here and provide help with a current game and future games.

This is just my two cents. If you read through this site enough, you will discover that there are many fantastic folks who help in every facet of the game, Sisutil is just one of those people who not only shares but is always happy to help.

I play monarch okish now, had a quick gander at sisiutil's beginners guide for the first time tonight and found info I never knew! :p

I'm confused, go figure. Founded Mining, Inc. spread it domestically to 5 other cities so far. Corps screen shows the +9:hammers: and -6 :gold:. HQ is in my WS city and everything is coming in (income wise) as expected. I'm confused when I check on one of my cities that has Mining Inc. and the Corp. Maint. is listed at -11.32 :gold: for just that city? Why is this so much higher than the listed -6?

When I check the Economic adviser, I'm showing -50 in costs, and +32 on income side, so right now it's a -18 drag, which is ok by me given the benefits, but I don't get the disparity between the Corp. Advisor and the City screen showing the -11. Can anybody elaborate? Thanks

Do you not have a courthouse it that city? Courthouses reduce corporation maintenance costs just like they do regular city maintenance costs.

Courthouse is there, that's another reason I'm so confused. This city is home to Ironworks, but I thought I spotted another city with unusually high Corp. Maint. I'll be playing it a little later tonight, so I'll jump back on with better info then. Am I not correct in thinking that the Maint. in the city for the Corp. should be the -6 that is reflected in the Corp. screen, or does it get adjusted for # of resources used by the corp., or maybe City size?

Are you referring to the city maint. in the city screen or to the maint. cost breakdown that you see in the tool tip if you mouse over the total maint? The number shown in the Corp tab is only the maint cost for the corp not the city as a whole, so it won't be the same as the total city maint. in the city screen. The maint. cost for the corp. goes up with every resource that you add for Mining Inc. That's the trade off for increasing the production. That said, with the HQ in my WS city, banks, markets, and the one that partners with markets (I just now had a mental block and can't name it) everywhere that there is decent commerce production and courthouses everywhere, I usually have my total gold actually increase as I add Mining to more cities, even when I am using enough resources to put an extra 16 hammers in each city from Mining. I do think that city size has some influence, now that you ask, since the cost in all my cities is not usually the same.

about overflow.
any good links on production overflow?

in my last game i went into heavy whipping and also massive production (Detroit with heroic epic, police state, state property)

so detroit with all the other mentioned bonuses is producing around 110:hammers:
i am buuilding knights for 80:hammers: (not sure, point being he gets out every turn woth overflow)

1) is all the overflow cumulitave, ie. stored? when i switch to say bank, do i get all the previous overflow from say 3 knights, or just from the last one?

2) a city NY has core production 50:hammers: and is spamming 40:hammers: spies.
after spamming 4 spies do I have 40:hammers: overflow or just 10:hammers:?
or is it even more complex?

3) does it matter whether the overflow comes from core production, civics, national wonders, improvements, chopping or whip overflow?

4) the diplomavy winning doesnt have win screen, is it a bug?
5) in bts, the films for national wonders are not played? IIRC, they had films in warlords and vanilla
6) spy building doesnt have any souunds like when u build temples etc?

I'm not sure if you've seen this article, which explains the mechanics of corporate maintenance in excruciating detail.

One thing I noticed is that there's a factor in the formula to cancel out inflation in the actual cost of the corp, but that factor isn't included on the city screen. In other words, the city screen will overstate corporate maintenance by that amount.

Does that account for the difference you're seeing? If it's still not lining up, perhaps you could post a couple of screenshots or a save.

Vaidd; thanks for the link, I will check that article. I believe I looked at it previously but was just overwhelmed at that time and never dug to far into it.

I am talking about the amount of Maint. in the city screen, and did not realize it took inflation into account, nor the # of resources as bernbaum has stated below. Both of those would explain what I'm seeing, and definitly helps me understand, thanks for the input.

I also made a mistake in my original post. I am looking at the Corp. Maint. in the City screen (the area that also shows the breakdown for # of cities, and Distance), when I originally posted I thought I was quoting the 11.32 :gold: AFTER the Courthouse, but that number is actually the gross # before the courthouse is considered. That obviously changes things, but I'm glad I was wrong, this particular topic has really shed some light on a couple of things for me I had never considered before. This is really the first time I've dug deep into Corps. in the game, usually running SP on through to victory or defeat.

My Corp. HQ is in my Wall Street City, with all the accompanying boost buildings. Didn't realize the # of resources used had an effect. Thanks to all for helping me out.

The above exchange, and the strategy article, got me thinking about something I have never understood about Corps. Before corporations, the +/- income in the top left corner of the screen is accurate. But when I found a corporation and start spreading it, that number is no longer right. It may show that I have a +95 income per turn, but the before/after view of the net total reflects a -30 loss. Why is that? Is that a direct reflection of the cost to spread the corp to a new city?

There is a specific cost involved when you first spread the Corp. to a new city, a one time flat fee, that is separate from the maintenance involved with the Corp. That cost is a set amount for Domestic Cities, and a much higher amount for Foreign Cities. As an example, my current Mining Inc. has a flat :gold: 79 to spread in my city, and :gold:168 to one of my neighbors. If you move a Corp. Exec. onto a City and hover over the "spread corp." button, it will show you the cost to spread over on the left hand side of your HUD display.
