Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Can you get unlimited turns or at least more than 500 turns?

I know this is really basic, but can someone point me to a thread that explains Golden Ages please. Or, explain exactly what is happening in them?

You get +1 :commerce: and +1:hammers: for all tiles that have them.

Your Great People points is increased by +100%.

You get to change civics and/or religion with no anarchy.

I think you also get some :) and :culture: bonuses.

Playing at Epic speed will give you 750 turns, and playing at Marathon speed will give you 1500 turns. However, the cost of everything else also increases (i.e. buildings and units take longer to build, technologies take longer to research).

Ok, thanks guys.

The great people that are consumed are random (except for the one initiating the GA).
Actually, if you gather the correct number of Great People of different types on the same tile (and put others on a different tile), then you can control which Great People are consumed. :)

They last 8 turns on normal, 10 on epic and 16 on marathon.
That's correct. And 6 turns on Quick, I believe.

No, no bonuses to :) or :culture: directly from the Golden Age.

So if I need 3 great people for a GA and I have 5, I can hand pick the ones I want to burn by placing them in the same tile? Cool.

Yep, absolutely. Provided the ones you put in the same tile are all of different types. Quite handy for letting you keep the GP's you most want to have around. :)

And on that topic, what GP are the best to use (for their ability), and which are better for GA burning like in the above case? To me, it seems that it depends on what you are looking for in your specific situation. Thoughts?

It does depend a bit on your situation and your planned victory condition. Using Great Artists isn't good if you're going for a cultural victory, for instance. ;)

In general, personally I tend to prefer using Great Artists, Great Merchants and Great Spies for Golden Ages, since their intrinsic benefits are usually the ones I find least useful. Great Prophets are fine as long as I've built my shrine (if I hold or will soon hold a holy city). Great Scientists are also okay once I've got an Academy in my capital (i.e. not the first one). Great Engineers are probably my least preferred GP for Golden Ages - I won't use them for that purpose until very late in the game, typically after I've already founded my corporations (if applicable) and am not worried about races to any further wonders.

I was playing a rare game for fun last evening (too much modding lately), and I noticed something strange. It's a Noble, Pangea, standard size map, and I am Suleiman. I managed to early rush Ghengis, and as I went exploring, I found Gandhi. I decided to see if I could take him out as well, and I did. In the process, I captured the 'Mids. Shortly after that I popped open the Civics screen, and I had all of the Government civics available.

What the heck? I thought that the only thing that remained from a captured wonder was the culture effect? Isn't that true? Or did I break something in the new BAT version DLL I've been working on?

Er... knowing me, I'm either confused, or I did break something. Be gentle, k? :D

Erm...

I thought capturing Wonders gave you the benefit but not the culture.

Actually for multiple great person Golden Ages, the great people used are the ones closest (and of different types) to the one who triggered it. They don't have to be on the same tile, although of course if they are on the same tile they are guaranteed to be the closest great people.

I'm not ready to worry about breaking a hip just yet.

But thank you. Trust me to get it all bass ackwards. :D

Hey, guys! A quick question: Does it affect AI's willingness to capitulate if they are the last independent civ left in the game? (In other words: Does the AI "know" that the human wins if it caps and does this affect its decision?)

Not directly. However, their relative power to other Civs does count and if a lot of the others are vassals, the last indie thinks it isn't doing so bad. The most important attribute is which AI it is. Some will capitulate almost immediately. On Earth1000, Peter won't cap when he's down to one city and one military unit. Mansa usually doesn't wait for a war to vassalize.

So, what tile improvements tend to be the best for what tile. I know that hills are good for mines, but I have a hard time choosing when to use cottages, etc. This usually tends to lead to my downfall. Any help?

Don't choose tile improvements based upon the tile, but based upon the intended specialization of the city. For example, a production city will get mines, watermills, and workshops (and enough farms to keep citizens working all those food-poor, hammer-heavy tiles); a GP farm will get farms and possibly even windmills rather than mines on its hills. (Though I tend to prefer mines for the very slim chance that I may strike a resource.) A commerce city gets cottages, and so on.
