Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

For the record, if you attach a Great General to a unit then it will not lose any XP when you upgrade (as well as the upgrade being free). This would probably make sense for the situation someone posted before with the 500 XP Samurai, as well as many other cases of super-experienced units. ;)

What is the difference between the mods listed under advance and under the normal game mods/scenario section? A few are listed under both and the only difference I have noticed is the advance section has to restart the computer before it starts play.
Scenarios which are based on the normal game will not require you to restart Civ before you can play them. Mods or scenarios which have altered the basic game (e.g. with new art and new code) will require you to restart Civ before you can play them. It doesn't matter whether you access them from the "Advanced" tab or from the mod/scenario selection under Single Player.

At least, that's the way I understand it works. :)

Scenarios are simply worldbuilder files. They work like maps, so there is no change of rules, improvements, buildings or units. hence you can load them from a unmodified game ( or , if you are already in the game, start it without restarting the game )

Anything more than that ( XML, python, C libraries, fpk ... ) is a mod. It needs to be installed in the mod directory and will need a restart if you are already in game.

Can AI teams members declare war on other AI's at will?

Say for example i'm playing a 2v2v2v2v2 with ALL AI and me. Zulu (aggresive warmonger) is on MY team and dislikes another AI for whatever reason. Can he just declare (like he always does) in the early game? Or am I the one who has to declare since i'm the human player?

If I want to try and add more than 18 civs to a map, then how would I be able to? Is there a specific program I'd need?

The "specific program" you need is a mod that includes a custom DLL that allows more than 18 civs. The DLL that comes with Civ only allows 18, so it has to be modified to allow more.

There is a 50 civ mod in the download database that does nothing but increase the limit.

The RevDCM mod has many other changes, almost all of which are optional, and bumps the limit up to something well over 30 (maybe even 50, I don't remember) - it's a pretty popular base for other mods, so the mods based on it also tend to have in increase to this limit.

It is probably a bad thing that I didn't even realise there is a unit level prerequisite for the West Point...
Or a good thing... it probably means you've been kicking AI butt in every game... :ar15:

A question about spawnbusting. I know that each unit will bust two tiles in every direction. But what about my cities? Barbs won't spawn inside my culture, of course, but how far out do they have to be before they will? I would guess one tile but 0 or 2 wouldn't surprise me.

Barbs will not spawn in tiles rendered visible by anyone, by any means. But as far as I am aware (speaking from experience with marathon/raging, the whackiest barb spawn), this can make the diagonal corners of cultural borders tricky. Spawnbusters operating in the cardinal directions from a city can be in the fourth or, in the case of cultured hills overlooking plains, even fifth square away from the cultural border... but in the diagonal directions we often have a tile or two obscured by fog, and these will spawn barbs.

here is a tricky question. lets say my state religion is Hinduism. but some of my cities recognizes some other religions as well (like Christianity and Buddhism). so my question is-is it worth to spam non state religion missionaries into my other cities in order to be able to build more different temples for more happiness?

If you are aiming for a Culture win, most definitely. The key to culture wins are the cathedrals.

It depends on the type of game you're playing. If you're aiming for culture - or are just having a fun, non-competitive game - then spreading non state religions can be good. If you're aiming for a highly streamlined and aggressive strategy though, you're usually best off only spreading the state religion (to get the key benefits from religious civics and/or wonders and/or your shrine). In competitive multiplayer - where I spend most of my time - spreading more than one religion is usually a suboptimal use of hammers, unless someone else is doing it for you.

Basically, I'd advise against spreading multiple religions if you're looking for the optimal way to get the most secure (military) victory. However, if you're just playing for the fun or want some flavour, no one's stopping you from spreading multiple religions around and enjoying yourself.

My 2 cents anyway. :)

i don't play culture victory so that spamming would basically be for increased happiness in the city(for more productivity) and maybe gold income since i have several holy cities

It might be worth it, if you own the shrine, if you really need happiness or if you have some contested borders. Monasteries in high commerce cities are also helpful.

You need 3 temples for each cathedral.

The free religion civic allows each religion to generate 1 culture and 1 happiness.

Sometimes you might also want to change your state religion due to diplomatic reasons...

I should add one exception: I will usually spread every religion I can to just my capital, as long as it's a decent commerce city (and it typically is). Not for the Temples, but for the Monasteries. With Bureaucracy and a bunch of cottages, all those Monastery benefits add up quickly. It typically isn't worth doing all around your empire though, as the cost:benefit ratio is usually too high in most cities outside your capital.

a big fat 'depends'

a reason for a yes could be that the religion your spreading is the AP religion
