Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

First, make sure you're playing Beyond the Sword; in previous versions of the game ships could not enter forts.

Second, forts and cities can form canals that ships can sail through, but the length of a canal can be no more than 2 tiles--so two forts or a fort and a city, that's it. Maybe you sailed through two forts and found you couldn't sail into the city that constituted the third tile.
I'm pretty sure you could sail three tiles if they went fort>city>fort
but you could never sail two tiles that went fort>fort

regardless, I am unable to sail fort>city now so something has clearly changed.

Here is a picture of what is NOT working

here is a picture of the exact same thing, only a couple years ago and it is working

Here is the save file of the non-working canal, if anybody is curious.http://bespin.org/~papakapp/Civiv/asd;lkg AD-1979.CivBeyondSwordSave

The main difference that I see is that the city where it is working is coastal and the one where it isn't is land-locked. I'm not 100% sure of the mechanics but that may have something to do with it.

For what it's worth, that was going to be my guess.

confirmed. you can sail from the east as far as Derbe Berhan. But from the West you can't even enter the city.

And that explains what Sisiutil was saying. You can sail through two forts if both of them are coastal. I think the only time you can sail fort>city>fort is if there is a one-tile lake touching the city to make it count as coastal

**edit**
yep, worldbuildered a lake in there to test it and then it worked

I have two related questions:
1. How do I check to see what version number I have?
2. Do I need to download only the latest patch for each game (that is, BTS 3.19)?

I have two related questions:
1. How do I check to see what version number I have?
run the game>advanced>about this build
2. Do I need to download only the latest patch for each game (that is, BTS 3.19)?[/QUOTE]

I think I always go vanilla>patch>warlords>patch>BTS>patch
but I only do that "just in case" I'm pretty sure you don't have to.

OK, thanks. I'll download the CIV and Warlords patches if I should decide to play them without BTS, which I don't think I will. I finally got the 3.19 patch downloaded after three truncated attempts.

Another question:
Every time I load up CIV or BTS, I get a little pop-up that tells me I have an incompatible sound device attached, and that it would be disabled. This has happened on two computers, neither of which had a microphone or webcam or anything attached. The sound has never been affected by this, and it happens with fresh installs of the game. Any idea what causes that?

I don't recall what causes the incompatible sound device message but it has been the subject of discussion in a couple of threads in the past year. The way to get rid of it was discussed and pronounced to work by the person with the problem, in both cases. So, I would suggest searching this forum for those threads.

Open up civilizationiv.ini, and change the setting (can't remember what it's called but it's obvious) from 1 to 0.

Hey there,

is in the city view some indicator that tells me how many specialists I can put on without taking citizens from working tiles? I do not want to count or try that all the time ;)

Thanks

It's usually zero (everyone works tiles). If you want specialists, click on the tiles you no longer wish to work. Then assign the released citizen as you wish.
If you have more people than tiles, they appear as a citizen specialists.
You can also get one from the Mercantilism civic and one from the statue of liberty.

There are also wonders and buildings that give free specialists, but those are fixed and cannot be removed or reassigned.

Thanks both of you.

I know the rules how this works, but sometimes I visit a city and I can add more specialists and there is no change in tiles which are worked from citizens and no change in toher specialists - so some citizens were obviously slacking :) . And that is strange, the citizen automation is switched on...

Dear gods, mate. Never automate anything...! :D

Is there anyone to stop the game from centering on the last unit you selected? I hate it when I tell some random unit to move somewhere, look at something else, hit end turn, then the game flings me across to the map to that unit.

Actually, the game will update the cities and then find the nearest unit to the last city you tinkered with. It haven't gone back to the last unit I was on that I have noticed...

IIRC there is an option to make the game not automatically centre on a unit (may be no unit cycling, I'm not sure but I am sure the option exists). But this gets annoying because 90% of the time that's exactly what I want to do. I mostly get this irritation when i want to check a few cities, when you come out of the city screen the camera goes back to the unit that was selected. To avoid this I select a unit in the city so when I come back out the camera stays close. Just find some ways to get around it like this.
