...so an unsettled polar region will keep producing galleys for my frigates to gain xp from?

Yes, you will see them, occassionally, quite late in the game on large islands that are settled after astronomy. Up to you to laugh of curse when they pillage your work boat . . .

What does the Sistine Chapel and University of Sankore do if you have no state religion? Does it do it for all religious buildings or just no effect?

Sankore is plainly useless without state religion ... Sistine will not be useless, but it will lose the religious part of the bonuses ( it will keep the culture bonus on specialists )

At what stage does the +2 Hammer bonus for AP Religion buildings drop off? Is it a certain tech, or when the AP itself actually expires?

Well, when the owner of the city that has the AP gets Mass Media ;) Besides being perfectly possible to have both the UN and AP woking at the same time, it also means you can "ressurrect" the AP if someone without Mass media captures the AP city .

BTW, you will also lose the AP hammers if you sucessfully defy a resolution ( that is, if you defy a resolution that was going to pass otherwise ... if it wasn't going to pass, then technically your defy is moot and you will suffer no consequences from it ).

Actually it doesn't work that way that I have noticed (at least not with the unhappiness; not sure about the hammers). If you defy, it doesn't matter if it passes or not, you get hit with the unhappiness...

To be honest I don't recall the last time I fluked a defy ( AI tend to be very predictable regarding votes :( ), so I really am unsure on that one ;)

It is one of the main gripes about the AP and the UN. The defy choice should be made AFTER the vote result instead of DURING it. That way, you know you are going to lose before you defy so that your choice is submit or be hit with the unhappiness.

As it is now, you basically gamble with the AP/UN result. It doesn't make sense and is completely stupid.

As others have said, you lose the hammer bonus from the AP when the owner of the AP discovers Mass Media. As others have NOT said, you also lose the hammers from Monasteries (and only Monasteries) when you discover Scientific Method, assuming that the AP owner has not yet discovered Mass Media.

Just to confirm, the determining factor for AP obsolescence is the nation that owns the city the AP is in getting Mass Media? It's not enough that the AP resident learns MM?

And does everything - diplo victory, unhappiness due to defiance, bonuses for religious buildings, etc - go obsolete only when the the owner of the AP discovers MM?

Sorry for what may seem to be obvious questions, but I have never been quite certain exactly when I can consider myself free of the AP...

AP is like any other wonder in that regard: it is only obsolete if the current owner has the obsoleting tech ;) So yes, it has 0 to do with the AP resident and all with the person that controls the AP city.

AFAIK the obseletion makes all the AP related stuff to puff ... not sure on the defiance  , though. But the diplo victory and the hammers go away , that is for sure ... well, atleast it resurrects via capture of the AP city by someone without Mass media :D

All buildings (including wonders) are mapped to the current owner of the building. So, yes, all that will only go away when the owner of the AP gets MM. And if the AP gets conquered by someone without MM, it comes back!

And it wants BRAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNSSSSSS!!!!

The Last Stand series is great. There are actually a lot of good flash games out there that have long play time, are very in depth, etc. Another good zombie series is Sonny 1 and 2, and then there's the fabled Mardek 1, 2, and 3.
