Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

You have several non standard BTS AI names on the list in your screenshot. Are you playing a mod? If so, the Diplo victory may have been modded out or the requirements modified.

I don't know, but the BUG mod sure helps.. it gives you an alert when you can whip something, like this

"Nidaros can hurry Spearman for two population and 5 :hammers: overflow and +1  for 30 turns"

I'd look in the appropriately named subforum for a comprehensive guide

Like what?

This game is a scenario but not a different MOD. So all the basic rules should apply...
I would say it's highly likely that diplomatic victory has been disabled in that particular scenario then. You could post a save for someone to check if you want to make sure. :)

Ummm…. all of them except Brennus - part of the Scenario, I would think. At any rate, could be Diplo is disabled.

There is a Mao listed but it's not Zedong. Although it may be an alternate spelling for the same guy, it's not the standard BTS AI name.

(Maybe it's Zedong's long lost brother. Remember in Chinese names, the surname comes first and the given name last. :D)

Hey all, I am playing a game with about 12 other friends and we are still early in the game (I am at work so I dont have the date in front of me, but I still have hamlets I think so not too far) One of our players is dropping out, and instead of switching to AI she asked if I would take her cities. So I am trying to decide if I should. Her location is about 20 spaces away from my closest city, 25 from my capital.

So I know they will get hit for the distance from my capital in maintence costs, and there are about 3 players boarders inbetween our land. So support is not an option from my current area.

So my question really is how bad would I get hit by taking these cities, I have 6 cities now and I got them set up pretty decently, but I don't want to have to knock my slider down to nothing by taking them. I also wouldnt put it past someone trying to unload them to freeze my income so someone else can capitalize, but I am just not a good enough player to see what I should do here.

It will be as if you simultaneously built them at once. Biiiig hit to commerce/turn unless one of them has Versaille.. but as it's early game I doubt it. It' would mean a big hit to commerce but probably would raise your research/ turn a bit but I wouldn't unless you were planning to take them anyway.

Mostly I'd suggest dividing the cities evenly or having them go to the closest. And if you already have them you could gift them to people. (AKA regifting :D)

Hmm...she could gift you all of her cities except her capital and let you declare, save you the trouble of lugging an army over there. As to an economic hit, you should be OK, depending on how many cities she has and your current economy. Beeline state property, and whip the infrastructure out(especially courthouses). It's going to be a pain to defend all of the cities unless she gifts you all of her units as well.

From the sounds of things it seems you're playing in a 12 person PBEM or Pitboss game, correct? With friends you know in person or over the internet?

I would point out one additional thing, aside from the whole maintenance issue. If this is in any way a competitive game, be aware that some players may consider one player gifting an empire to another as completely unfair. Even in friendly/fun games there may be some players who would raise an eyebrow to this.

Now I don't know your particular group of friends, so you'll have to judge for yourself. I'm just saying that in quite a few games that I've played in over the years, I've noticed some people are exceptionally touchy to these things - indeed some games have even ended prematurely over arguments surrounding empire gifts (for instance, the first BTS Multi-Team Democracy Game here at CFC).

Perhaps your group of friends is much different and wouldn't really mind at all. But just be cautious... if there's any doubt, leaving her empire to the AI may be the simpler (and fairer) option - not to mention the one that keeps the game going. Or find another player to substitute for her. :)

Mao is a surname. His given name is spelled "Zedong" in the modern Pinyin transliteration. In an older transliteration (Wade-Giles) his name was spelled Tse-tung. What's the name you saw?

Yes, this I know ;), that was why I posted the remark, in reply to the person who noticed the name Mao. The list of names are in his thumbnail above, attached to msg 18822. The Mao listed is "Mao Tun".
