Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Hm I'm also at my wits end as to what the problem seems to be. The problem seems not to be city-related, but it is in all cities. As I had thought running Mercantilism, not State Property. Unfortunately I cannot take screenshots as they won't be saved apparently, if anybody would be interested I could only provide a savegame...

Have you installed the latest BtS patches? I believe you should be up to 3.1.9.

Definitely load up a saved game, but in a different thread, as this goes beyond Quick Answers/Newbie Questions...

Yes, a savegame is always the best solution.

I´ve actually got a question of my own: What happens if I finish a Wall while the defenses of its city just got bombarded all the way down to 0? Do I suddenly get 50% defenses again or is the actual value lower?

To found the corporation, the headquarters city needs to have one of the resources in its BFC, and you need to have enough money. Each later spread will also take some cash.

I've not found it necessary for the headquarters city to have one of the resources in its BFC and I don't remember ever needing money to found the corporation. Yes you need it to spread the corporation but not to found it.

Thanks guys, but seems I won't need to upload a savegame as another of your tips did it - I wasn't up to date and the patch fixed the issue! Now to learn about corporations :)

Btw, if I spread the corporation to a rival's city, the rival's city would get the benefits?

The rival city would get the benefits based on their access to the associated resources.
You would get the 4 gold in your headquarters city.

The rival civilization would also stop being willing to trade their excess resources associated to your corporation. So you might not want to spread the corporation to them if you want to maximize the benefits in your cities.

I tested adding a wall to a city and it immediately had 50%.
I think you would get the 50% (but did not test your scenario); or if e.g. they had bombarded it to 4% then 54%

Both these statements were wrong.

bcool is correct
you do need a resource, but it doesn't need to be in BFC

Since when does the HQ city need resources in the BFC? I think you´re making that up.

I believe but I'm not certain that the wall will not help.

I believe it is different if you add the wall using the editor, but in the game if you build a wall after your defense went to zero the wall will not help.

I believe instead that if you build a wall while the city is being bombarded the city will receive 50 * the remaining percentage of the cultural defense.

So in your example the wall would give your city 50 * 0 or 0 defense.

If however you had a city with 40% cultural defense and had been bombarded down to 20%, then the wall would give your city 50 * 20/40 or 25% cultural defense (which would be harder to reduce due the wall's other benefit of reduced bombardment damage).

I'm not certain of this but this is what it seemed like in the few times it has happened to me in games.

After playing a bit around with two corporations last night, I must say I really like that feature. Will be interesting to see how it will play out in a tighter game, or if it can actually be a game-changer when you are somewhat behind and can catch up exploiting a corporation.

Another question I would have: The civilopedia says Aluminum Inc provides aluminum if you have coal (and 3 :science: per coal) , which would come in handy as I don't have aluminum. I do have coal, but cannot see aluminum under my available resources yet, nor do I get the double production speed bonus for it. Any other prerequesites for that I might have forgotten about? I did research Industrialism, which reveals aluminum...

You don't get aluminum on your resource trade screen. You are just able to build things that need aluminum, such as battleships, in the cities that have Aluminum Inc.

Buddy, he autocorrected himself in the above post of yours. ;)

About 50 mins after Imp. Knoedel made his comment.

Actually, Imp.Knoedel's post was a cross-post - two minutes after I corrected myself.
Then ~50 minutes later, I edited the original post.

Spoiler :
Why even post this?
Spoiler :
Because if we play Civ, then generally we are into micromanagement and perfectionism
this thread isn't about me

OK, since this is the newbie thread, here is some potential value added:
a cross-post is one written before (seeing) but posted after another post.

I have a quick question:

So, Alex has Gandhi as his worst enemy, and I'm Friendly with Alex. If I extort some gold from Gandhi, will that count as trading? In other words, will that give Alex the negative diplo thing "you traded with my worst enemy"?

It won't count if you demand tribute, only things the worst enemy recieves matter.

I'm a little confused by that mechanism actually, because it doesn't always come into effect. In one game for example I was trading with people despite worst enemy statuses, and got -4 in 'reward' from Genghis Khan. But Hammurabi or whoever it was didn't give me any penalty. Pretty sure I was trading two-directional techs too, and not just selling stuff. As a result I don't care as much about it any more, at least when dealing with cheap techs. Maybe the beaker count has some bearing?
