Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

And if there were already 2gpp/t of ga and then halfway to being done 2gpp/t of gs came in, it would be 66/33?

I think that should be 75/25 if using the new system.

Halfway ga means you'd have 50 points (if 100 was needed for a great person). Then 2gppt ga and 2gppt gs for the remainder would mean 25 more points for each... thus 75:25.

If you were referring to the old system, then you'd be right I think.

So you mean to say they've changed to the more intuitive method for calculating the GP probabilities? That's good to know; the old system seemed a bit obscure.

In other words running a spy specialist (+3GPP) and owning the pyramids (+2GPP) for the entire period of generating one GP would yield probabilities 60 / 40...

Yes and again yes (75-25). You can read the last few posts of that thread that I linked. VoiceOfUnreason noticed that the rule-set had changed but the original article hasn't been updated yet. Because it wasn't updated to the latest rule-set, I mentioned the change separately.
I also think this rule-set is more intuitive. I was surprised about the original rule-set when the article had just been created.

Select 'Custom Game' instead of 'Play Now' and you can determine victory conditions as well as other apects.

thanks

If you use the custom game startup, then you can change a lot of settings pre-game. One of them is the time victory.

this must be right *wink*

So there will be numerous requests from various AI's. Open borders requests, trading requests, several demands or freebie requests, demands to take action against other AI's. This forces you to chose between the various opposing AI civilisations. If you don't choose, they will all dislike you.

I found out that isolationism is not acceptable to these AIs. I got a grudge against him because he started off being rude with tribute demands. Plus I knew it was only two of us so....I prepared for war. I thought that if I never declare war then perhaps the other guy wont either even if I blow him off totally.
It is probably true to life. If you dont talk to people and do activity with some people then they are suspiscious and figure you dislike them.

Thanks

The other poster brought up spies:
This was my first heavy use of spies too, I used spies to steal techs and generate unhappiness. How can I tell when Charlemagne is using spies and in what capacity he's using them? I know there are counter espionage missions, which I did some of but wasnt sure if the effect was useful. Do you go by odd clues?

The only way that you can tell that he's actually using spies against you is if you capture them. This is mentioned in one of the messages at the start of your turn. Mostly when you capture spies, you won't know who's spies you've captured, but sometimes it is mentioned. If you're playing a game with just one opponent, then you'll know who's spies you've captured.

The Event Log (upper left corner or shortcut key CTRL TAB) contains all of the messages that appear at the start of the turn so that you can reread them at a relaxed pace. Clicking an event in the event log moves you to the location of the event.

There is a strategy discussion/article about spies which you can read. It's a bit technical, especially the first post, but if you read a bit further in the thread then you'll see a bit more readable posts with less formulas. I wrote some of those more readable posts as I thought the original post(s) while containing all of the detailed information might be a bit hard to read for some of the less mathematically inclined readers. The thread contains information about the chances to capture spies and how the cost of espionage missions are calculated. Interesting stuff if you want to know all the details (like me).

Hi guys...great great site..

well today I went to play warlords on line and had to download something..no big deal

at the end of the download I am now having a D3DX9_32.DLL problem.

I had this problem when I first got my new PC with Vista.. I downloaded a patch which apparently from memory helped those with AMD graphic cards.

anyway it worked...5 months later I have no idea where I found this patch..please help ..where is this patch ??

It says "requires iron". I do have access to Iron just outside my capital, complete with a mine. I also have access to coal, with a mine. I have previously been able to build swordsmen.

When attacking units with fighter planes (usually ships) sometimes I cannot strike even though its my turn and they are within reach, the grid does not turn green or even grey, just nothing.

The only reason I can think of is that the game is thinking ahead and using the Fighter plane's turn to intercept. Is that the case?

the game doesn't think so no
It's probably because your target is already under 50% strength.

road it all the way

does that only apply to certain targets? and only with fighter planes? As this doesnt happen with land based units.

Bombardment with planes cannot reduce a targets hitpoints below 50%. Collateral damage from siege units also has a limit. And in BTS, siege units cannot kill an enemy, their damage is limited and then they retreat from combat.

An outside possibility if you have BtS is that you've built the National Park in the city, which removes access to coal, and hence prevents you building ironclads there.

You mentioned that you have a road....

You probably know this, but click on the city & bring up the details about the city. On the right top, are the resources that your city has access to. They are kind of small and perhaps a bit obscure as to what is what. But is coal and iron listed? If not, something in the supply chain is broke. You may have access in some cities, but not others.

You may need to build another road. I'm thinking of the possibility that city A (near the mine) has iron, but that city B (far away) does not - so, you'll have to connect them - usually by building a road.

Can anybody tell me why I still can't build destroyers/transports? I appear to have the uranium hooked up but still no dice. Little help?

I could handle the summary by Derbus

Yours were interesting (what I read) but I cant pay attention to such amounts of detail as you can. You are smart!
I got the gist from one of your posts that there is room for game espionage balances to be done in a future patch maybe.

THANKS!

Ironclad needs this:
Steel & Steam Power techs
Iron & Coal resources

So if it doesnt work then like Cottie said: road it all the way >>>
One time the screen said a special mine resource had a road but there was no visible road so maybe it was a dead end short road only. So I did "build route to" then went from mine to city and that worked.
