Question: I have build a farm on grassland with rice. There is fresh water.

I thought the food value would be 4 (2 for grassland, 1 for rice, 1 for farm). But I am getting 5 food for this space.

Is this because of fresh water?

I can't find anything in any of the materials (manual, forums, etc.) that tells me I get +5 Food for this space. Please help me understand so I can plan my cities better.

Thanks.

THe behaviour of farms is the following:
- you can build farms on farmable ressources, on fresh water tiles (river, lake, oasis), by chain-irrigation with civil service, and everywhere wth biology.
- a farm is said to be irrigated if it is linked directly or indirectly (with civil service) to a freshwater source.
- the output of a farm tile is the sum of: the output of the tile, the output of the ressource if any, +1 if the farm is irrigated, +1 if you have biology.

So a riverside grassland rice farm will get 3 (tile output, with rice bonus) + 1 (ressource output with a farm) + 1 (irrigaton) so 5 food. f it's not riversde, it will only get 4. In the latter, if you chain-irrigate it, it will provide 5 food. And finally, when you get biology, it will produce 6 food.

As an other example, a non-chained biology farm on a plains will get 1 food (tile) + 1 food (biology) so 2 food. If you chain-rrigate it, il will get 3.

Hope it's clear :)

edit: Roland Johansen's answer is perfect too :)

Take a look at the entry of the farm improvement in the civilopedia:

Farm:
+1 with irrigation
+1 with biology

And then the specials for certain resource types:
+2 for corn
+1 for rice
+2 for wheat

Each of these 3 food resources also increases the base tile output by 1. You can read that in the civilopedia entries of these resources themselves or by holding your mouse over the picture of one of them in this civilopedia screen.

So in this case:
grassland with rice: 3 food
Irrigation (from fresh water): +1 food
farm on rice: +1 food
Total 5 food

Without access to fresh water or a chain irrigation with the Civil Service technology, the tile output would have been 4 as it would not have been irrigated. At biology the tile gains another food.

And yes, this means that it is attractive to get some irrigation to farms on corn, rice or wheat if at all possible.

ggganz > yes; natural spreading of a religion has more chances to occur if the shrine of this city was built.

Other factors include distance to the shrine, open borders, and I think some others I don't remember; and don't forget that a religion will NEVER naturally spread to a city which already has a religion.

When people posts screen shots of their games here on the board I've noticed that on some of them warnings like Aachen will grow into unhappiness the next turn, show up. I would love to havethat function and thought it was included on BTS but no. So, how can I get that function?:p

I am interested in trying out one or two mods (especially the Canadian Civ one) but I would like to have the choice of playing with or without the mod. I don't want the mod to permanently change my copy of Civ such that every game will have the mod and I would have to uninstall the mod if I wanted to go back to normal. How can I do this?

All Mods should be installed into the \mods directory of your install anyway. They will only be active if you load the mod from within the game. No Mod should even attempt to change the actual install.

This may not be the appropriate forum but I just got a new laptop with Windows Vista and cannot install CIV IV on it. It from the Civ Chronicles edition. Has anyone had a similar experience or can you direct me to the appropriate forum?

Thanks in advance.

I would try the Tech Support forum. And give more details, like what it says just before it stops.
But I have Vista and have had no problems with it at all. I just installed it, installed BtS, and I'm playing right this very minute! Don't know why it doesn't work for some people, because it says Vista is a supported OS, at least on the back of BtS it does. Weird.

Thanks, I'll do that. BTW - it doesn't say anything, it just locks the computer up when you click on "Install"...also tried going to "My Computer" and starting the install by double clickin on "SetUp.exe"...same thing, it just freezes up.

How do I disable the diplomatic "talking heads"? The game itself runs fine with highest settings, but it takes ages to load up the diplomatic screen and I figure its because of the animated heads. Also the game sometimes crash. I know it is possible to disable them, but I forgot how and I can't find any solution via the searchengine.

I just startted playing Civ4 and I can say I'm esthetically pleased but there are little to no military units, Civ3 had more. that and the Navy units are greatly depleted. Has anyone made a mod that adds more variety to the Military units, or more precisley the navil units?

When creating a colony is it possible to pick which cities you want to give to the colony? In my current game, I've been warring with a civ on another continent and one of the cities I captured has several wonders including the Mausoleum of Maussollos. I want to keep this city but release the rest to a new colony but it doesn't appear to be possible... is it?

Another question, this time concerning the use of the civfanatics forums...

Ever since I did a complete reformat recently, when I use civfanatics I do not stay logged on even though I keep checking the box "remember me". As a result, I have to log in every 20 minutes or so, or however long it is for it to time out, and for some even stranger reason I cannot upload any files. As soon as I try to upload a file I somehow get logged out again.

Anyone have any idea what might be the problem here?

(Sorry there's now four questions in a row)

You cannot really disable them but you could install NeverMind's Static Leaderheads.

Have a look in the Download Section there are quite a few mods that add units or change appearance...

When creating a colony you have to liberate all cities on the same landmass, only when you acquire new cities on that same landmass can you chose which of them to gift to the colony...

Thanks ori.
So the only option I have is to capture a city, create a colony, and then capture the target city with the wonders, but gift the rest of the cities one by one. It seems a bit awkward and asymmetric but I guess it'll work.

I'll try looking at the cookie settings but I don't think that's what the problem is, unless one of the cookies from the advertising banners counts.

This site also uses some scripts - but I just tried a while blocking them and it is just a nuissance because you cannot click spoiler buttons and stuff like this but it won't log you out - so I am pretty sure that its just the cookies.
Edit: actually it is just one that stores your userid, password and last activity that is necessary and it definitely originates from civfanatics.com so no advertiser cookies...
