Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Can you open the map edit mode without starting a game like in Civ III ?
No. But you can download user-created programs which allow you to do this. You might want to check out the Map Scripts forum, many of them are quite good. :)

In the map edit mode how do you assign a starting location for a Civ?
Unlike Civ3, you don't assign starting locations in the World Builder, but you can move the Settler starting units for each civ to your desired location. Some of the map scripts from the above link might allow you to set starting locations like in Civ3.

Thanks very much!

Also, when I try to run the 1.61 patch, it says "no version of Sid Meier's Civ IV is loaded", and it is loaded for sure.

What is up?

are you using gold edition or complete edition or a digital distribution (steam, d2d etc.)?

Gold Edition

FYI, CIV IV shows up in my add/remove programs list.

Noob question here: I was just wondering if the two 1st strikes from the Woodsman III promotion will stack with the two 1st strikes that a Samurai gets. Thanks.

Yes, all sources of first strikes stack.

Where can I find a list of GPs teching orders? I've tried searching in the forums but not had much luck.

I remember seeing an article that explains all the abbreviated terms but I lost it. What does ITT stand for, and does anyone have a link for that article, I'll bookmark it I promise.

Can you no longer set a city as a rally point for newly minted troops?

Depends on context, but usually means 'In this thread'.

I can't be 100% sure that you can't, but I've certainly never done it myself or heard anyone else mention doing so.

If you have the BuG Mod installed, the tech tree shows the next tech that each great person will bulb. You also get a lot of other goodies :crazyeye:

Hello.

I have searched the FAQ, tutorials, the whole CivFanatics site, and the Net... and I just can't find what I'm looking for.

I want to know the length of turns in each game speed mode of CivIV.

For example, on Normal speed:
4000BC to 1000BC in 40-year segments = 75 turns
1000BC to 500AD in 25-year segments = 60 turns
500AD to xx in 20-year segments = ? turns

etc. I want this for all five speed settings.

Can anyone point me to this info, or alternatively, post it? I really don't want to have to play through five games, one on each setting, and try to notice the dates when the game speed changes each time.

@Leperflesh: It's all in the Civ4GameSpeedInfo XML file (times expressed in months).

So on quick speed that would be:

60 turns of 50 year increments (4000BC-1000BC)
30 in 40 year increments (1000BC - 200AD)
20 in 30 year increments (200AD - 800AD)
30 in 20 year increments (800AD - 1400AD)
25 in 10 year increments (1440AD - 1650AD)
40 in 5 year increments (1650AD - 1850AD)
65 in 2 year increments (1850AD - 1980AD)
70 in 1 year increments (1980AD - 2050AD)

Normal Speed:

75 in 40 year increments (4000BC - 1000BC)
60 in 25 year increments (1000BC - 500AD)
25 in 20 year increments (500AD - 1000AD)
50 in 10 year increments (1000AD - 1500AD)
60 in 5 year increments (1500AD - 1800AD)
50 in 2 year increments (1800AD - 1900AD)
120 in 1 year increments (1900AD - 2020AD)
60 in 6 month increments (2020AD - 2050AD)

Epic Speed:
140 in 25 year increments (4000BC - 500BC)
90 in 15 year increments (500BC - 850AD)
40 in 10 year increments (850AD - 1250AD)
90 in 5 year increments (1250AD - 1700AD)
70 in 2 year increments (1700AD - 1840AD)
100 in 1 year increments (1840AD - 1940AD)
220 in 6 month increments (1940AD - 2050AD)

Marathon Speed:
100 in 15 year increments (4000BC - 2500BC)
300 in 10 year increments (2500BC - 500AD)
170 in 5 year increments (500AD - 1350AD)
201 in 2 year increments (1350AD - 1752AD)
129 in 1 year increments (1752AD - 1881AD)
180 in 6 month increments (1881AD - 1971AD)
264 in 3 month increments (1971AD - 2037AD)
156 in 1 month increments (2037AD - 2050AD)

There's only four speed settings - not five.

I started building a wonder in one city, but I want to switch it to another. The wonder is greyed out everywhere else now, even when I change the production of the first city. Is there any way to permanently cancel that association, or am I stuck building it there?

Edit: This isn't true. I figured out the real problem. Sorry to take up space.
