Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

I recently received CIVIV Gold edition for the holidays. I have been reading through the "abridged manual" which I find does not have answers to my questions about the game. The cover says "Full Manual on Disk 3" but when I go to open the data4.cab on Disk 3 I get a message "WinZip cannot open X:\data4.cab because it is not in the standard microsoft CAB format ...". So how do I open it and get the full manual?

I'm ready to show Napoleon who is boss and I need some advice. I just beat every AI to Assembly line and I'm stacking Infantryman and Machine guns to use against him. Here are my two questions.
1) When attacking his city should I use TWO stacks so that I won't get collateral damage?
2) When attacking should I attack with the Whole stack or INDIVIDUAL units one at a time?
PS Thanks to all of you who have answered my questions so far. Your help is invaluable to me!
1) If you have enough units that each stack is still large then yes. I'd rather have my units all together though so they are more likely to be protected by the strongest defender
2) Whole stack is easier but with individual units you get to choose the order you attack in. If it's going to be an easy win, use the whole stack but lower odds should be individual units.

What are some ways to quickly piss a rival civ off without DoWing?

Saladin wants a defensive pact and I want Roosevelt's land. I want to know if it is possible to try and annoy Roosevelt to the point where he attacks me.

Demand stuff until you get the maximum penalty
Get others to declare war on him (not in your situation though, it'll make him less likely to declare war)
Get others to stop trading with him
Different Religions

1) Collateral damage hits at most 8 units and most siege units hit less units. So if the stack is bigger than 8 units, then you already suffer maximum damage from enemy collateral damage attacks. Only small stacks (say less than 4 units) suffer significantly less than maximum collateral damage. But such small stacks are very vulnerable to attacks from units they can't easily counter and will typically be totally destroyed.

Therefore it is usually better to group all of your units together so that the most healthy and best suited defender can defend against attacks and so that even after several collateral damage attacks, there are still some units undamaged in the stack. It is very important to have a good healing unit in such a stack.

2) The AI will select the unit with the highest chance of victory when you attack with the entire stack, so in that sense it seems quite ok. However, sometimes every unit in your stack has a poor victory chance and then you might want to pick an unexperienced attacker with a 5% chance of victory to damage the defenders over an extremely experienced attacker with a 20% chance of victory. That way your experienced units can be used to attack and defend when it matters (say a 90% chance of victory for the experienced unit over a 40% chance of victory for the unexperienced unit). Also in the situation of bad attack odds, you'd usually want to pick a unit with collateral damage ability in order to improve the odds for the next units. That might not happen when you attack with the entire stack.

However, Roosevelt will never attack you when you're significantly more powerful (or more precisely, if your alliance is a lot more powerful than his alliance). Power is measured in the power graph (F9 menu).

Ah thanks for your help. I patched my CivIV when it prompted me too, but I've checked, and here's what it says:

Civ Version: 161
Save Version: 103
Build Version: 1.6.1.1841
Build Date: July 18 2006

Which is older than the more recent patch. However, the more recent one isn't installing because it because it says an internal error occurred and can't seem to find the file to update. This is getting more technical though so I might just email the tech support about it.

Since you are using a Mac, the automatic patch connection, which is what that prompt uses, won't work. It always downloads the Windows patch, which results in either a failed patch or an error message. Go to the Civ Fanatics Civ IV Macintosh forum. There is a sticky there that contains links to all of the Mac specific patches. Download those manually and install them.

What causes global warming/How can I prevent it?

I just lost my time victory cause of Global Warming. :(
Bah, I should have kept nuking him instead of asking for a Peace Treaty.

How did cossacks get nerfed in bts? I'm playing as russia and they're destroying everything in my path.

I haven't played vanilla in a long time so I don't remember exactly but I believe that they used to have three extra :strength: Also, cavalry in general got nerfed in BTS by adding curriassiers as an in between step and pushing back cavalry more.

I think

Raising my chances for victory decreased my chances for victory...

One thing though, how does nuking the enemy affect ME?
Radiation during building? (Reality speaking)

Realistically? No idea. Stupid part of the game and stupid way of including it. Not only can it effect you and the person you nuke but it can effect some random AI halfway across the world.

Is the City Flipping After Conquest setting turned on in the default single-player game? (Talking Vanilla Civ IV here.)

Wait, what's the difference?! So, "flipping" refers to an instant return to the original culture, whereas "revolt" is where it takes several turns and damages the city?

revolt is when the city loses all its cultural boundaries for a few turns and does not produce anything. A city that is in revolt because of cultural pressure can either flip to the culturally dominant civ or end its revolt after a few turns and return to normal (which is a random decision once the city is in revolt). A conquered city will not flip so it will always return to normal but it can revolt...

This might be too complicated for a "quick answer." I started playing civ IV (BTS) recently, and I'm working up through the levels... I've just begin to play at noble level, and suddenly everyone hates me. (On points, I'm -- just barely -- ahead of everyone I can see.) Is there some strategy that will keep them neutral, at least?

Not everyone. That's the magic of diplomacy - you are forced to choose allies.

How does setting up a PBEM game work? Does the host do it himself? I'm particularly asking about civs/leaders. Do the players have to agree on who they'll play beforehand so that the host can set it up, or is there some feature for everyone connecting and choosing their own civ?
