Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Hi everybody’
I’m one of those sad old guys who only plays against the computer (which I’m convinced cheats on occasions) I play patched version 1.74 on Noble level and just about hold my own. But I’m getting very frustrated trying to stop my cities doing their own thing and going into starvation mode when the turn before they were a couple of turns from growing.

It’s the 1940s and I’m trying to build the Apollo project and increasing my other 15 plus size cities. I carefully set each one up to grow quickly. There are no happiness or health problems. On the next turn I find some of them are in starvation mode with lots of merchants and scientists. It doesn’t matter what traits I emphasise or switch off it still happens with one or two cities each turn. That means each round I have to go into each city and light up the appropriate tiles again and again. Which is where I give up in frustration.

I thought it might be a computer glitch but I’ve tried the same game on my laptop and the same thing happens. Can anyone help with this?

It sounds like the governor is controlling your specialists. In the city screen, on the bottom, on the right, is a grid of little icon buttons. When you hover the cursor over each of them, they tell you what they do. One of them lets the governor decide about specialists. It is a toggle. Click it to turn off the governor. You have to do this in each city. Once that is turned off, the only way to get a specialist is for you to decide you want one. That should eliminate your problem.

This was interesting to me but didn't seem worthy of a new thread, so I'm just posting it here. Can anyone explain what's happening in the picture below? On the turn I wiped out Spain and for one turn after, a single tile of their culture still appeared. I'm sure it's just a glitch, but has anyone else seen this before?

Seems to be a minor bug... I've noticed it before, both when capturing cities, and when eliminating a civ. It should disappear after a turn or two.

Hmmmm...
On the Charlemagne scenario on BtS, I had the highest "Holiness" of 104 compared to the next highest oif around 60 or 80 ish, when another Christian leader decided to declare war on me.
I had a numerous amount of Papal Pikemen (Special units from the pope, stronger than anything in his army) and the city was on a Jungle/Hill Tile.
Apart from him taking over my most precious city, no-one seemed to CARE.
He didn't lose holiness (which is what's supposed to happen when you declare war against Christains), and no-one lowered their regard for him.
He even GAINED holiness because he took over one of my cathedrals.
Are there any reasons this happened?
From what I can make out, the 5 "major" civs aren't supposed to declare war on each other, but apparently not. :/

I'm playing as America on BTS. From the start of the game all my cities get
OH YEAH! +1 happy face.

Just to make sure it's clear, my cities are getting +1 hapiness, not because of any resource it's just because of OH YEAH. Is this unique to America or...
anyway it's pretty funny.

That's the Charismatic trait, so you're playing as either Lincoln or Washington.

When playing Earth 1000 AD, I see that all AI have different difficulty settings.

Does this change how good they are, or is it to balance the game by introducing penalties such as research time? I had some problems with England on Noble (I'm a beginner too, and don't have much patience for drawn-out wars). Will I research and build faster on an easier difficulty?

If you recall, Great Generals weren't in vanilla Civ4, so it wouldn't actually matter there. :p
Don't want to get lawyerish, but I haven't talked of GG there :p In vanilla was better to have a chariot medic 2 or a scout medic 2 than a spear medic 2, because of the mobility and of being less prone to get into actual combat. Same as in warlords ( if you change medic 2 for medic 3, that is a GG enabled promo ) and unlike BtS ( as I explained in the post you quoted )

And if you want to play honest civ, then GG medics are BANNED, because a) when did Florence Nightingale become a Great General and b) its basically cheating :)

I need help. When i have many cities, sometimes my cities suffers a decrease in population, and i don't understand that (icons in red).

Why this happen? What is the problem? Are Spies? How should I react to this?

Increasing espionage? Should I have spies in my cities or something? I don't understand, but the fact is that i have lost many times due to this.

Thank you very much, I appreciatte your help.

Edit: I play in BtS.

There are many potential causes and only one of them is espionage. Could you upload a savegame where the issue is occurring?

Super medics are like a tool in a tool box. Why wouldn't one use every tool available?

honest civ? I prefer a good dancing banana civ game myself.

Eh? How is it cheating to use a Great General promotion? :dubious:

Sure, you can make a rule not to personally use it for flavour in your games. But it's silly to say that it's "cheating" to use the Medic III promotion. It's only one unit anyway, and it's not as if it's game breaking - you still have to be very careful with them or else they'll easily die.

Cheating (in a single player game) is in the eye of the beholder. Is it cheating to go into WB and give yourself an army of tanks @ 4000 bc? Who knows. I don't usually do it in my SP games, but then again, I do from time to time go into autosave and replay a turn when I screw up. Calling a super healer cheating is new to me. I often have more than one.

Different people have different ideas about cheating, true. But the things that people disagree about usually involve reloading the game, and various levels of using WorldBuilder. I can't understand how anyone can say that merely using a promotion which is freely available to anyone in the regular game - with nothing at all modified - is cheating, though. That just seems absurd to me. It's pretty much exactly like claiming that using Bombers is cheating. (And incidentally, I think Bombers acquired at the right time are far more "unbalancing" than Medic III could ever be.)

Hi guys.

I downloaded the Afrikaaner civ from this site. The question is where do I place it the civ folder?

After nearly a month and the cat still won't give up its secret!

Ask your cat! Sorry, I can't help you.

The answer would be a neat cheat if possible to switch back and forth but would take some fun outta the game.
