Can I defeat longbowman cost effectively with cho-ko-nu?

If you battle a great number of longbowmen, then the collateral damage will take its toll on the longbowmen and the cho-ko-nu's will easily win the later battles. If you need to defeat a single longbowmen that defends a hill based city, then it can't be defeated cost efficiently by any contemporary unit (except a ridiculously high promoted unit).

Do buildings like grocery markets and such only give the added health bonus if that city has access to the required resources or is just possessing them in general (like through a trade) enough?

First off, grocers give a health bonus, markets a happiness bonus. So long as you possess the resource either through a trade or anywhere within your territory, you will receive the :) or :health: benefit.

Hey, I'm new and posted this question in another thread where I probably shouldn't have, but as I'm learning where things should go I don't think I'll be reading much else than what I see on this thread.

Is there any way I can play on the map of the world with 18 civilizations of my own choosing? I know there's a scenario of this in Civ4 Beyond the Sword, but I don't like the idea of the Aztecs being on the map with Americans and other contemporary civilizations. Having the civilizations start off in their proper place of the map would be fantastic as well.

Use Worldbuilder to change the starting locations of the civs you don't want in the game, and then use the text file to change what civs and leaders they are.

You can also go to the Custom Game menu and select your opponents there. But as Camikaze said, you'll then need to use Worldbuilder to place them in the places you want.

There are various icons which will appear above a city's name on the map, such as the production (hammers), wealth (gold coins), and research (beaker).

What makes them appear? I assume they mean this city has an excess of that item. If so, what defines excess? Also, can someone please tell me what the silver star icon represents that sometimes appears in this area?

Thanks.

They mean that the city has the best production ability ( hammer ), the best research output ( beaker ) or the best monetary output ( coins ) of your empire. The silver start appears in a city that has the forbidden palace or Versailles, and that, because of that, acts as a second capital ( city with the palace has a gold start ;) )

Why can't I sometimes make Horse Archers/Elephants and other units that require specific resources even though I control them? I've built camps, pastures etc on them and have them 'white circled' and the required techs (animal husbandry etc).

Thanks

Maybe you didnt build a road to the camp/pasture
its best to get a route (sea or land) back to the capital

Having tried what was suggested to me already on this issue, I'm back again to clarify what I want and ask about the how. Here's what I've tried: Through custom game, I can have whichever civilizations on the map, but I can't have a map of the world to play on. In scenario and custom scenario I can have a map of the world, but I'm limited to only the civilizations from warlords when I'd like to play against civilizations like the Dutch and the Portuguese.

Is there any way I can combine these two elements for an awesome game play?
I.e. A map of the world ( as in the continents of Africa, South America usw )
and Civilizations from Beyond the Sword

Thanks in advance

For that you will need to open the scenario file with a text editor and change the civs by hand ( or simply clean the map of civs entirely ). Give this thread a look for starters....

Hi!

I did this small utility program for me, I hope it will be useful for other. The GUI is very simple. I may add new features later on. The WorldBuilder adds some lines that make your new Scenarios created hardcoded. For example, if you want to change the start point from one civilization, it will always know some tiles from the beginning (even if it cannot see it from the new start). The WorldBuilder hardcode some civilizations characteristics like the Leader Name, if you are modding and decided to change the XML files, it will not change in the Scenario because of that.

I found out how to clean maps from WorldBuilder. If I missed something, just let me know it. I really think the utility should work with Scenarios from Vanilla and BTS.

You don't need to install the program, just open the Windows Explorer and click two times over WBCleaner.jar (requires JVM 1.4 or later - most computers have it - get a Java Run Time (JRE) if you don't have it). You will need the JDK only if you want to change the utility. The program should work with Macs too, but I don't have one to see how the GUI will look out. I haven't used the best practices to guarantee the tool will look nice in every OS. I have tested it only in Windows. If you use Mac and cannot read the GUI, send me a screen shoot, please.

You have to type the name of the file () or press "open" to choose the file from a dialog.

Options:
Allows All Speeds - In section BeginGame/EndGame changes (it DOES NOT ADD the options) Speed and GameTurn, to Speed=NONE and GameTurn=0

Clean up TeamReveal - Deletes all lines TeamReveal

Clean up Units - Deletes all units

Clean up Cities
- Deletes all cities

Clean up civs - deletes the the data of LeaderName, CivDesc, CivShortDesc, CivAdjective, FlagDecal, WhiteFlag, Color, ArtStyle, StateReligion, StartingEra, CivicOption, Handicap
leaves the data of Team, LeaderType, CivType, PlayableCiv, MinorNationStatus, StartingGold, StartingX=, StartingY=

I have tested the program only with Warlords (I don´t have BTS) with the WB file I saved from WorldBuilder.

Have fun!

When is says "clean up civs" it doesn't mean deleting the civilizations from the actual game entirely, it just means from that particular map, right?

Stupid question, but I'm smart for knowing my limits.

are there any "early start" mods for prehistoric man/stone age man? i've found stone age 2.58 mod but just wondering if there are any others... (looked for agggges) :crazyeye:

thanks, hustus :)

This program seems to be used for editing maps created from worldbuilder saves. It allows you to throw out lots of information from the map so that you can later freely choose your civilisations and other settings in a custom game with this particular map.

It only edits the map file, not the rest of the game. It would be almost virus like if it did.

It seems to have been created for the first expansion pack, Warlords, so it is not clear if it will work for the second expansion pack BTS.

It works for BtS as well. The WB saves changed very little between Vanilla, warlords and BtS and the parts the program edit are untouched since the first version of the game.

And yes, the clean civs option cleans all the civs in the map, letting you with a map that can be played by any civ instead of simply the ones coded there.
