Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

A question on Corporations.

I have my opportunity here to found my first Corp. Civlized Jewelers.

now, it says I will get +4:gold: for every city with Civilized Jewelers.

so.. I see that these Corporate guys kinda work like missionaries and they can spread the corporation all over.

does that mean that for every city on the map that has CJ in it my base city will get +4 :gold:?

or does it mean that all the cities in my empire I spread it to will get +4 :gold:?
For every city a corp is spread to, the HQ gains 4 :gold: making it a good city for Wall Street in many games. This applies to all corps.

Civ Jewelers (CJ) also provide :gold: to the city its spread to at the rate of 1:gold: per gold/silver/gem resource (multiples count here!)

Its also worth noting that spreading a corp pushes city maintenance up but as CJ provides :gold: to those cities it almost always turns a decent profit.
But CJ is not a corp i'm fond of, I like Sid's Sushi and Mining Inc far more, those two together are truly evil.

^thanks.

hmm, really tough decision here. CJ would probably rock in the long run, as I have several golds in house, and am importing gems..

on the other hand, I just took 2 cities and either of them could really use a culture bomb!

arrrrgh!

also, I'm not really sure what would be the best city to put it in, where I can focus on putting out Execs.

there are only 3 corps left though, so if I don't take one, I suppose that also gives the AI a big advantage??

Not necessarily. Like warfare, the AI doesn't make very good use of corporations. If I'm playing for a domination win, I adopt State Property and never bother with corporations.

SS and MI are usually good as domestic corps; reap the benefits, but don't export them. CJ is a good one to export to make cash off your neighbors.

You can just go to the folder where they're saved I guess, but is there any real reason you'd want to?

I've been playing civ 4 for a long time, but does anyone know if you can delete saved games, and if so, how?

yes you can. the save game files are in your USER folders. so, whatever the user name is for your computer, where it keeps your default pictures and Word files.. the default 'Documents' folder. (at least for me)

there is a folder in there called 'My Games' - look in there, should be a Civ 4 or Beyond the Sword folder and saved games in there.

so from your Desktop you go: username/documents/my games/beyond the sword/saves

It's rather unlikely that files on your hard drive are slowing your system down unless you (a) have so little free space left that it's interfering with Windows' need for virtual memory and/or (b) you have never defragged your hard drive.

It's not a bad idea to get rid of files you don't need and to defrag every now and then. But you may have other issues that are at the root of the performance problem.

i have defragged it, but i have so many files taking up such a vast amount of memory on my computer that it is slowing it down. so to go back to what you said, it is limiting my amount of free space on my computer which was your reason (a) of why it might be doing this thx for the advice/info

Beyond the sword is the most up to date. More likely to find online players using that version as well.

Iam trying to find a real world map for Civ 4 but i dont have any addons like BTS. Also can anyone tell me where i can find a world editor to create my own maps.

Thank you

What do corps do to resources? Use them up, make more of them, or what?
It depends. Most of the corps give you extra hammers, food, culture, research, and/or commerce in return for you pumping in excess resources to them. For example, Sid's Sushi (one of my favourites) gives you additional culture and food for every fish, crab, clam, and rice resource you have. You can also trade for these excess resources with foreign civs, but be warned that each extra resource usually increases the maintenance cost of each corporation.

There are some scenarios with world maps and in the custom game menu you can pick maps. Been so long since I played Vanilla I can not remember if there is an earth map there or not.

Worldbuilder is a world editor. Go to the options menu.
