Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

There's only two tiny gameplay differences between the religions. The first is that their appropriate cathedrals (those unlocked by Music that give 50% culture) are sped by different resources (Copper, Stone, Marble). This might come in handy when playing with Choose Religions on and pursuing a Culture victory - you can handpick religions for whose cathedrals you have the speeding resource.

The other is that autospreading is calculated "in order" for each city, and stopped if the autospread succeeds. Judaism is checked first, so it has a teeny-tiny bit bigger rate of autospread than the others.
You forgot the fact that the 3 early religions (Buddhism/Hinduism/Judaism in a standard game without Choose Religions) don't get a missionary, while the 4 later religions (Confucianism/Christianity/Taoism/Islam) get a free missionary to slightly compensate the fact that the early religions have more time to spread before they arrive.

I suspected the difference between religions would be tiny or non-existant to avoid offending anyone within the religion. The differences would have to be inoffensive, and I guess that would be hard to do without taking it too far away from history.

I guess it's the same reason why Adolf Hitler isn't one of the leaders. I'm sure many would be offended, but for me it's more about the history and being able to change it. Also being able to bomb the :):):):) out of him would be a nice bonus :D.
Actually I don't think the absence of Hitler in the game is really as much of a matter about people being offended - you have leaders like Stalin and Mao in there, after all. Rather, Hitler's absence is more likely due to the fact that the game wouldn't sell in Germany if Hitler was in there (due to their present day laws), which would cut out a significant audience from being able to (legally) buy and play the game. ;)

Can someone please answer how to attach a Warlord to a unit or multiple units?

I found this great thread on some strategy to use, but the first time I tried attaching a Warlord to a unit I attached him to a lame-o Longbowman unit and don't want to make that mistake again. Thanks!
It should be fairly straightforward. The easiest way is to ensure that the unit you want is the only one on the tile with the Great General, in which case it cannot attach to any other unit. The other way (if you want to spread the XP amongst several units) is to give a unique name to your desired unit (by clicking the unit name in the box in the lower-left of the screen), so it'll be easy to pick him out when you get the selection box for the Great General attachment.

As for attaching a Warlord to multiple units, that isn't possible - only one can have the Great General attached, although several might share a portion of the XP.

No, I didn't ;) That's not a property of the religions, but the tech that gives them. Islam doesn't give a missionary if you found it from Meditation due to Choose Religions.

Yes, RJ already called me out for that one. I never draft Infantry or MIs--that's my excuse.

I've got one: do Privateers count toward your power rating?

They do have an individual power rating (CIV4UnitInfos.xml) which would be quite useless if they wouldnt' count towards your nationwide power rating. Or maybe the power rating is also used in some decision making process of the AI (should they build it or not).

Uh... I don't mean to be an absolute noob here, but... Are you guys sure about this? I thought (from experience) you always get a missionary if you found a religion UNLESS you have only one city.

Either I'm hilariously wrong, or all of you are. :P

Yeah, we're pretty sure... :) You can even see it from Civilopedia under Religions, for some dumb reason it's there even though it's wrong with Choose Religions enabled. City count has no effect, though usually you only have your capital at the time these are founded (not Mono perhaps but anyway).

Good Day to All ! I was wondering I am in the Space Race right now. Usually I am so far ahead that It does not matter what other Civs are doing in the Space Race . But sometimes like this time I am a bit behind. I have unmatched Military Might and plan to use it to even out the Space Race by destroying the Competitions main cities. But First I need to access the Progress of these Two Civs to see who I should Strike first. On the Victory Screen it shows me Only One Civ s progress on the SpaceShip.
How do I know about the others or can I
and If I destroy a City and the City made a Spaceship part does that also destroy the part ?
Thanks

The only time you get a Free Missionary in my expeirence is when you already have Founded a Religion and you found another one

I had the same issue . You have to be in a City of course. I did not know that . A List of all your units in the City come up and you just click on the one you want to be the Warlord.
Tips for the pick. Have it be the a unit that you know will be able to upgrade 1 and have a powerful Upgrade 2 for upgrades are Free for your Warlord.

No, that's not how it works, only how it might seem to work. IIRC, it works like this, whether you have "Choose Religions" on or not:

  • If you are the first civ to finish researching Meditation, Polytheism, or Monotheism, you found a religion but you do not get a free Missionary.
  • If you are the first civ to finish researching Philosophy, Code of Laws, Theology, or Divine Right, you found a religion and you get a free Missionary.

When's the best time to build the Ironworks? Should I wait for factories and coal plants? It seems that the benefit of increased production is offset by the building time.

It does not need to be done in a city. I've attached several Great Generals to units in the field.

I'm playing a Prince game, large map, in a space race with Jao, Washington, and Mansa (who is a vassal of Jao, if that makes a difference). All of a sudden ICBM's and tactical Nukes are available. This is the 1st time I've seen nukes activated; they've always been outlawed by the UN in my prior games.
Two questions: Is it normal to not have a notification that the Manhattan Project was built and who built it?
What kind of nukes can you load on subs because a 4-hex range tactical weapon seems like a waste of time?

Unless under extreme circumstances the national wonders should be built soon after available. I don't often build some late national wonders because I'm close to victory (usually domination/conquest).

BUG gives a notification that the MP has been built, and I'm pretty sure the basic display gives a notification too. Maybe you just missed it? Checking the top 5 cities/wonders page will show you whether it was built, as will the game log.

Tactical nukes can be loaded on subs and missile cruisers. Tactical nukes are also not affected by SDI, which can make them a lot more useful than ICBMs.

If I don't remember wrong tactical nukes ARE affected by SDI, but they have a good evasion chance so get shot down much less frequently.

Ah, didn't realize had to click button to check projects, not wonders. Also I saw somewhere that ICBM's don't destroy enemy ICBM's. No need to put them on subs then. I think I'm abandoning the game anyway because it keeps crashing to the desktop.

You remember correctly.

Essentially, it means that after construction of the SDI by an opponent, ICBM's have a 25% chance to hit their target and Tactical Nukes have a 62.5% chance to hit their target. Next to that, Tactical Nukes are half the price of ICBM's. Both of these elements make Tactical Nukes an interesting investment.

An interesting detail is that once the UN bans nukes, they cannot be BUILT any longer. However, anyone that built them after the Manhattan Project was built but before the UN banned them can still USE them. In a recent game, quite a while after the MP was built, I gained control of the UN and succeeded in putting through a ban on nukes. Somewhat later, one of my neighbors became my voluntary vassal and I discovered that he had several tactical nukes. Shortly after that, the AIs on the other continent went to war with one another. For a couple of turns the nukes flew back and forth until they had used up their stock. :nuke:

I'm very new to this game and I'm struggling with some very basic concepts so I'm hoping for some help.

1) Looking at the City Screen, if there is no circle around a tile to indicate that a citizen has been assigned does that mean that the tile is not generating any income (food/production/commerce) for my city?

2) I finally worked out that Resources have to be linked to my cities by road/river but what about standard farms/mines/cottages?

3) There lots of tiles along the coast that appear to be able to generate food/commerce - are they?

4) I can't improve coast and water tiles - is that because I haven't advanced enough to access the imporvements?

5) As I understand it, I can't actually stockpile food/production, just generate more than I'm using?

My familiarity with the Age of Empires franchise is severely messing with my comprehension of how Civ works - Civ is significantly more complex.
