Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Oh yeah, true... but it's still not a "no autorazing" option. Yeah, I don't play with "no city razing", mostly because the AI can often place cities in crappy locations that I want to relocate. :p

I believe its called "no city razing", which has far more implications than just that cities won't autoraze... you cannot raze any city, even if you want to.

Yep. that's the one I was thinking of. I've never used it either, since I may want to raze a badly placed city that I capture.

Hello fellow Civ Fanatics!

I've got two questions about the AI.

Do they, like the player, have knowledge of what's displayed in the demographics and graphs?

Also, are the AI influenced by what victory types you cross at the beginning screen?

For example say I only cross conquest... would the AI be aware that the only way to win would be to destroy everybody? Or would they play the same as if all boxes were crossed?

Just incase there's any differences in expansions/patches, I should mention I play BTS 3.19.

1) Welcome! :D

2) Yes, but it's not as important as you'd think. I know the AI checks the power rankings, but it doesn't seem to mean much.

3) The AI has no clue about victory conditions. Turn off everything but Conquest, and someone will still be building a spaceship and piling on culture.

4) Happy Civing.

Without Space Race checked, you can't build the Apollo Program, so no, they won't pursue that. Also they do not actively pursue a culture win as a set long term strategy if it's not enabled, though they still value "regular" culture as normal.

AIs do not actively pursue a Conquest/Domination victory as a long term strategy so they would not be more aggressive as usual if you only have Conquest enabled.

You can play conquest only and have decent competition if you: select aggresive war like leaders for the AI and click on "aggressive AI" in the custom game menu.

I'm wondering why sometimes when I capture a city it just automatically razes without asking me if I want to keep it. Can someone explain to me why this occasionally happens?

Others have touched on this, but I ran detailed tests on this long ago (early BTS). I haven't done so recently, so the rules could have changed.

The only factor I found was population, culture was irrelevant. The city will be autorazed if it never grew above population 1. Note that the current population is also irrelevant. In order to avoid autorazing the city, at some point in its history, had to have been population 2 or above.

I know it's a little bit of a ******** question but, Every game I play either Montezuma or Tokugawa declare war on me about the year 1200. As soon as the war starts 1-3 other players jump in on the other side. I normally pull through the war but it really knocks me out of the competition as far as winning goes. :(

any suggestions on how to

A. Kick their teeth in when they come.
B. Keep any wars in their territory?

also Where do you experts normally keep your research percentage? I have been trying to keep it at 100% but normally run out of capital unless I have founded a religion and built the special building in the holy city.

Thanks in advance!

Ironsides: welcome to CFC! :)

First of all, you can forget about keeping your science slider at 100. I generally play with mine at around 20-60, depending on the era of the game (and other factors, like whether I'm gunning to get to a tech quickly or whether I'm currently at war). The slider percentage is not what matters - only your net beaker count. If you're playing the latest version of the game, you can see next to the slider how many beakers you are actually producing per turn. 10% of 100 is a lot better than 100% of 10, if you see what I mean. Make sure to build enough cottages so that your economy is nice and strong - this way you can blaze ahead in tech even at low slider settings, while being able to divert money to other endeavours like espionage or simply filling your coffers.

As for the war issue: AI DoWs have a lot to do with your military power relative to the AI, so even if you do not plan to invade anyone, be sure to keep a substantial standing army around to deter invaders. It sounds like you are neglecting your military to the point where it would be silly for the AI *not* to invade you!

Thanks for the reply henrebotha.:)

I guess I need to do some research on beakers. I am playing on the Warlords pack so I guess It's different from the BTS?

The 20-60% on research is a bit of a shock. That should really help with the military.

Aelf has some great warlords walkthrough games worth reading. Many of Sisiutil's games were on warlords too, but those had about 10 pages deciding where to move the first warrior ;)

Well, I remember I couldn't see the number of beakers in Vanilla, and now I'm playing BtS 3.19 and I can see them. Perhaps the F2 financial advisor discloses this information? Anyway, I can't help you with guidelines for how many beakers you should be producing in any given era, but if you ask around this forum, some more experienced players could help.

There's a strategy/trick that lets you keep your slider down while keeping your actual research rate up: use specialists. Settle a city so that it has 3 or more high-food resources. Build a granary, library, university, laboratory, observatory, and any happiness and health buildings, and use the high food to run Scientists.

That works a lot better if you also build the pyramids and run representation.

I agree with Henrebotha: it's the number of beakers what matters for research speed. Next to that, one can get lots of technology through technology trading (if enabled in the pre-game settings). But the beakers form the basis for research and yes, they can be viewed in the financial advisor (F2).

In my games (immortal-deity), my research percentage varies between 5% and 75% (and 100% when I only have a capital city at the start of the game). I usually expand quickly until the beaker number starts to drop and I can't sustain more cities without stopping my research. At that point, my research percentage is very low (10-20%) while my beaker output is similar or a little higher than a the very start of the game. Then there's a period of slower expansion while also expanding my economy and then finally, my economy starts to soar when the number, the size and efficiency (buildings) of my cities grow. That's the era of currency/code of laws/calendar and onward. Then my research percentage typically also grows from 10-20% to 60-70% at then end of the middle ages and far more important, my research output grows from below 100 to far above 1000.

If you're used to trying to keep your economy going at 100% research output, then I wouldn't start making drastic changes to mirror the above play style. It's very easy to stall your economy and get in a situation where you can barely research at all. But I would advice you to open the financial advisor a bit more often to try to learn what is going on.

An empire of 1 city with 20 commerce all invested in science researches at a speed of 20 :science: per turn.
An empire of 10 cities with 20 commerce output each which have to pay 100 gold in upkeep still has 100 commerce left to invest in :science: which is 5 times as much and thus researched 5 times as fast (at 50% science).

I'm back after an extended retirement. can someone tell me where the "tag" list is? specifically, I'm trying to figure out how to make my post say "lurker's comment" or something like that.

Is there anyone willing to help me get past this step with using Civstats? I'm stuck at this step since CivStats isn't doing anything after I clicked "activate". (Password censored :) ). I haven't had any luck PM'ing people so far. The Official CivStats thread has been dead for quite a while too. :(

I'm not sure what you mean by "tag" but if it is the message under your screen name on the left (where you currently have "Idiot Emeritus"):
Select "My Account" at the top of the page
Select "Edit Your Details" from the left of the account page
enter your new tag in the box under "Custom User Title"

If you mean the message at the bottom of your forum posts, select "Edit Signature" on the left of the account page instead.

If you mean something else, please clarify what you mean by "tag".

I think what you're looking for is:

[ delurk ] Message [ /delurk ]

With spaces removed, that appears as:

lurker's comment: Message

I'm not sure where a list of all tags can be found, although it would certainly be useful though.

Hope that helps. :)

Looks like you're managing to find an answer in this thread. (Linked in case anyone else has the same problem.) :)

Hi, just joined in! Thanks for providing such a wonderful site!

I tried to look for the civ4 list of lingo which is crucial for reading your strategy/tips articles. Where do I find it?
