Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

What is the name of the mod that adds the three unused trait combinations? If I recall, one of the new leaders is for Japan.

LoR has all the trait combos.

I don't think this was directly answered, so...

It's optimal to have at least one of every resource - but some are better than others.

In particular (YMMV):
Unirrigated Rice is kinda poor as a food resource - 4F.
Sugar is more of a food resource than a commerce resource, and isn't great that way, either.

Pigs, Corn, Wheat are the great food resources. Particularly if the last 2 are irrigated.

Pre-Lighthouses, Clam and Crab are just 4F, making them less desirable than most land based food resources. Fish are 5F, but they are almost always on Ocean tiles, meaning only 1 Commerce.

Be cautious about Incense and Gold when they appear in groups in the desert. My first thought is always "Commerce City" when I find those, but unless you have a lot of food, it's very hard to work multiple desert tiles. Incense is almost invariably on flat desert, meaning no hammers or food, just commerce. It's one of my least favourite resources as a result. Fur suffers the same way that Incense does, but at least there may be some Deer around to feed the Fur harvesters.

Dye and Wine look great in the early game, but later on, you may wish you had cottaged some of them.

Gems are usually better than Gold because they can feed themselves (they tend to appear on Grassland), provided you are capable of chopping away the Jungle.
Excellent answer, though I must say that always like having surplus resources for strategic trading.

Just to supplement this a little:

  • Ivory, whales, and furs all become obsolete in the late game. Make sure you have other happiness boosters by then, and if you are trading surpluses of any of those away for other resources, you'll need to change your trading arrangements.
  • Even once they're obsolete, furs and whales continued to provide half-decent yields to the city working the tile--or at least, usually better yields than anything else you could put on the tile. Ivory, however, is usually best replaced by a different tile improvement such as a cottage, workshop, or watermill.
  • Whales become available late (with Optics) and obsolete relatively early (with Combustion); they are usually located in inconvenient spots (far offshore in arctic areas--leading to a city with lots of tundra, ice, water, etc.). The tile yield is mediocre. So don't go out of your way to claim whales.

I'm not sure you're getting it yet. Yes, the answer is 3 but you also get another 3 in any city with a granary - one additional for each of the resources in question.

In short you get one health for at least one of each resource, as you say. You get a second health in any city with the right building, granary, harbour or whatever as the case may be. Same rules apply to happiness.

Yes. I do understand. I was only using this as a generic example. Thanks.
:goodjob:

 Holy crap that looks awesome!

Not the mod I was thinking of, though. The one I saw was a tiny mod, literally only adding three leaders using the unused trait combos (Cha/Cre, Ind/Phi and whatever the other one is). I remember one of them (possibly Ind/Phi) was a new Japanese leader. Any ideas? Someone here had it in their signature, I think...

Question: If I only have time for one, which version of CIV 4 should I play: vanilla, warlords or BtS? Thanks!

Does anyone know the title and composer of Bismarck's diplomacy music (ca. 1690)? It's absolutely breathtaking...

Still looking for help with this.

Maybe not a newb question, but how do we change the number of units per line in a stack? Currently, I'm only able to have 9 units per line and I would like to have more per line.

That might be a question more appropriate for the mods forum. However, you can change the unit display interface in other handy ways with the BUG mod.

^thanks, I'll try that next time

Is there a way to watch the computer play? When I'm trying to get better at other games I often watch replays of more experienced players to get a feel for "tried and true" skills and techniques. I thought it might be helpful for my early game micromanagement if I could watch the comp play or something similar. I know TMIT has some youtube vids and I've watched a few of them now and they have helped, but tbh he plays so quickly early game that I have some difficulty following things, especially tile improvements and build queues-- it doesn't help that I can't really read the finer details like science slider or unit upgrades, or events, etc.

I wouldn't recommend watching the computer play. The AI doesn't do many things well - it presents a challenge to human players due to bonuses it gets and handicaps imposed on the player.

You're better off shadowing a game on these boards - depending on your level, there are generally a few games available to follow along with.

Most will say don't watch the AI cause they mess up. I disagree. I would play a game with teams Have 2 teams with 3 players each. So you'll have two AI's on your team. You can also world builder in a dozen great spys to use as scouts to observe your team and the other team. Good luck.
