Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Am running Bts but have just noticed that it does not require the disc anymore to play. Not bothered either way but does anyone know if anything loads from the disc during the game?

The disc used to be the security protection for the game. Other than that, the disc wasn't used for anything.

I have a question, probably moronic, but here it goes, i lost my old civilization complete box, whatever, doesnt matter really...

But now i want to play again

if i buy just the box of Civ IV beyond the sword can i play the game? or do i need, Civ IV + BtS expansion?

thx

Provided that you had already installed Civ4, I would have to think that you should be good to go with BTS (and if you download the latest patch you wouldn't any disc at all to play).

BtS is not a stand-alone game on its own. Civ4 needs to be installed on your computer in order for BtS to work, even if you never play vanilla Civ4. So as dirtyparrot said, if Civ 4 is installed, all you need is BtS, but if it's not, you'll need to buy both the original and the expansion pack.

A few quick questions:

1) Does WFYABTA work on a civ-by-civ basis and how many techs you've traded with that particular civ, or does the game sum up all the techs you've traded with all the civs and each civ has a different WFYABTA threshold?

2) How come sometimes my temples/monasteries/special religious buildings give me +2 hammers?

3) I understand that resources give you extra happiness/health but they also claim to give you +1 food or +1 commerce or +1 hammers, which I don't really get. Could someone explain?

1) Each civ has a separate WFYABTA limit which is the number of techs they know you traded with any civ. The civ needs to have met both you and the civ you trade with for it to count as a trade.

2) Apostolic palace gives +2 hammers to religious buildings (temple/monastery/cathedral and shrine) of the AP religion. EDIT: Unless you get expelled for defying a motion I believe.

3) That's the bonus applied to the basic tile yield (so unimproved pig on a plains gives 2F1H rather than 1F1H).

To clarify:

Each civ has a separate WFYABTA count which is the number of techs they know you have received in a trade or gift with any civ. The civ only needs to have met you for it to count. If this count exceeds their personality-based WFYABTA limit they start whining. Each turn there's a tiny chance for them to "forget" one tech you've got (i.e. lower the count by one).

I'm starting to understand this plot culture thing and the effect of the great artist. So in the middle ages, just trying to take the capitol of an opposing civilization without taking that civ's surrounding cities would be wasted effort right? No matter how many great artists you drop into that capitol, you may never get to beat the plot culture points of that civ even on the core 9 tiles.

Is that right? Because if it is then I can't just end wars after capturing two cities like I'm doing right now.

You ca typically raze one or two other cities to free you captured cap. of too much culture or capture those cities and gift them to vassals etc. But yea sometimes it's better to wipe out the civ entirely.

Option #1: raze cities around the newly captured one to give you some cutlure breathing room.

Option #2: keep enough troops in the city to prevent it from flipping when it revolts. Drop a couple culture bombs (great artists), build/rush some culture buildings, have the city produce culture.

Option #2 isn't easy, and it can take a while. I have pulled it off later in the game when I can $-rush items. Drop a bunch of missionaries in that city, spread religion, rush temples. If you "saved" a couple of cathedrals, you can then rush them.

Option #3: Vassalize the civ in question, and you automatically get to work all the tiles in that city's fat cross regardless of their culture. Essentially you get first priority for any tile within the BFC of any city that borders that civ. :)

To add to this...

Essentially you get first priority for any tile within the BFC of any city that borders that civ once you have the culture to expand that far. This can hurt your vassal because as your culture expands, the vassal will continue to lose tiles.

is there no way to get the earth map for the play now option so you can pick the number of civs you want to play on this map, like the previous version.. i only started playin a couple of days ago

Say i have built blocking cities and have a full border with the ai but haven't backfilled yet. With open borders, am I correct in assuming the ai is very unlikely to walk through my territory and backfill for me?

It seems from experience they focus on backfilling their own area and even overseas colonization before conisdering marching settlers through my turf. Is this a correct description?

That has been my experience 90%+ of the time. On a couple of occasions they did cross borders for a really juicy city site with over 6 good resources.:gripe:

The AI will never walk settlers through your lands to settle your back yard if you have a complete land block. Though 1) if your block only completes when they have a settler already on the way, it won't necessarily turn back 2) they can still ferry settlers there in boats, so beware of suspicious galleys.

So you can mostly OB free of worry :)

FINAL FRONTIER HELP

To start w/ I like the originality. There are things to fix as has been said elsewhere, BUT I like it.

My question .... how do I expand into other star systems. I built a star base and warp lines, but I can't get the colonization ship to do anything. When I click to move onto a star or a planet I get a drop down list of planets w/ a continue button at the bottom, but can't colonize anythiinnng!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Help!

You might want to look at the thread here. I believe it also contains to an updated version of the mod which fixes many bugs.

Is there a way to destroy part/all of an AI's spaceship in Vanilla Civ IV? I hear that in BtS you can do so by capturing/razing the capital after the SS has been launched, but this does not apply to Vanilla since there is no "after the launch" (instead it's called, "game over").

I don't know whether it was possible in Vanilla, but once you grow aware of an opponent building space ship parts, you can send spies into his cities to keep a lookout. When you spot a city working on a part, you can spend some money on an espionage mission to impede production of that part.
