Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

There are a few strategy guides in the strategy guide sub forum. I'm not ashamed to reroll a capital site that doesn't have a ton of food or stone/marble. You want the mids for rep. Bureau ASAP. Build wonders and settle specs. You get five national wonders, I like oxford, nat epic, globe, nat park, and IW.

I thought I was a big enough geek for this place... I guess I was wrong. :(

What's that mean in English?

PyraMIDS so you can switch to REPresentation civic. BUREAUacracy should also be switched to as soon as possible. Build wonders and settle SPECialist.

CivIV-BtS

Often After several hours of play I loose the little white dots that mark the path a unit moves on. This does not seem to cause a problem in the game, they just disappear for no reason; I can figure out.

You might ask, why I am asking now; as this this characteristic seems to have been
there all the way back to the original CivIV.

I would just really like to know.

I have found that the only way I can get the little white dots back is to save and exit the game all the way back to the desk-Top and restart the game. Then I am good for another few hours.:)

hi im new ive just bought Civ 4 and i decided to try online... it said to upload a patch then to install it but now i cant even load up my game. It shows the mini bar that says Enit Enigine and Enit Sound but once that disappears and is replaced with a black screen and the disc stops running and when i press the windows button it says error loading shader libraries can you please guide me through what i could try to fix this

PS i downloaded the BTS from this website... and i can't load it up its quite upsetting cause i only have the first version and i reallly wanna sack the English with Brennus (welsh pride  )

please guys a reply quickly would be very nice im kinda really hoping to get a quick match in later :)

oh... well ill see if i can delve into my treasury haha about the ingame patch i already installed it... anyway i can sort it?

Simply buy BTS and install it before trying the 3.19 patch :)

Better yet, get Civ IV Complete - GamersGate amongst others are running a good deal prior to Civ 5's release.

oops. haha sorry bout that. Anyway, Representation and Bureaucracy are your most important civics in an occ. Check out the Noble's club Peter game in the strategy and tips forum; it's a doctored map but perfect for an OCC.

Right guys it was simple  just needed to uninstall and now i will have to look for that patch the game offered me on here. thx guys :)

plz could anyone direct me to a discussion explaining more in detail what the fractal maps are? and did the small and large maps that were in the original Civ4 disappear in Warlords and PTW? thanks a lot

edit: sorry for bothering with this question, I finally realized that this forum has a "search " function and found all the threads I was looking for :)

sorry bout this guys... all these diff patches in the archives are confusing... i need 1.74 for windows vista... dont know if that makes a difference :D but if someone could post the link to the patch i would be very grateful :)

Apparently I managed to get a religious victory in one of my games, yet never did I (or anyone?) get the AP. There was no vote, and while I had spread Buddhism to everyone but Gandhi, I didn't expect to get any victory at all. Anyone know exactly how I won?

Thank you. I'll be checking those tips and strategies out soon. Sometime BEFORE I make a run at my first HOF attempt. As it stands, I got sucked into playing the Viking scenario via Warlords... but I WILL get to them.

Here's my quick question. I just restarted playing BTS after a long break. I recently hit the tech to build Attack Submarines and have access to uranium, but they are greyed out on my build menu. I have NOT yet researched fission, but according to the Civlopedia it is not a prereq. Ideas?

What does game speed do? I don't understand how a turn based game can have different speeds.

Changing the game speed changes how many turns it takes to build improvements, build buildings & units, and research techs. My math may not be perfect, but if a tech takes 3 turns at Quick to research, it'll take 6 turns at Normal, 12 to research at Epic and, I believe, 18 at Marathon (never play Marathon).

The slower speeds have more turns in a game to make up for it. Very few people play Quick. Marathon isn't scaled quite the same - units are cheaper relative to buildings at Marathon.

Where the differences comes in is that units move the same # of tiles, regardless of game speeds. Therefore, on Marathon, you may have everything explored by the time you research your third tech.

This has 2 consequences for war. After you build a military force, it takes a longer time to go obsolete at slower speeds. At quick, you can build an army of Swordsmen and, by the time they get to the enemy, Macemen are available. Generally, the slower the speed, the better for a warmonger strategy. Also, faster units are more valuable at faster speeds. This definitely includes India's Fast Worker - the best UU at Quick, practically worthless at Marathon.
