Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

I guess I better call back my fleet then.

I did notice the power indicator response. At one stage I was the 4th highest power, then I started a massive military expansion. I didn't expand any of my territory. I quick surpassed the 3rd and 2nd place powers and began closing in the the top power. When I started the upgrade he was way ahead but I began to close the gap quickly. Suddenly out of the blue he atttacked me. I had good relations with him before. The war dragged on in a stalemate with neither side gaining or losing much. Eventually we agreed a peace (which included him returning the cities he had taken from me).

His only reason for attacking seems to be that he felt threatened by my rapid increase in power.

There is any way to start golden age without great person? And why I can start only one golden age in game?

1) Build the Taj Mahal. 2) Get the "Marathon Runner" random event. 3) Burn GPs.

There is no limit on the amount of Golden Ages you're allowed to have in a game.

I get more great peoples later but I can start golden age only once by using great person.
I forget what "GPs" means :/

GP = Great Person

first golden age costs one GP

second golden age costs 2 different kinds of GP - you can't use 2 that are the same ( for example 1 Merchant and 1 Engineer but not 2 Merchants)

third golden age costs 3 different kinds of GP - you can't use 2 or 3 that are the same

further golden ages keep requiring one more GP than the lat one, all of them being different

And lets not forget the mausoleum wonder that increases golden age length by 50%,

If you only have 1 gp, and want to start a golden age, and haven't yet started one, you might as well make it count.

You can get a golden age from the musketman quest too. I think the library quest may give you one if you have built the Great Library as well, can't remember.

The events/quests that grant golden ages as one of the options are:
Code:
Event20:
	Marathon
Prereq: You at war with other Player, other player makes first attack on your plot
	Obsolete: None
	Active/Weight: 100/800
		Result:
1.Free Golden Age

Quest8:
	Sports League
	Prereq: CONSTRUCTION
Obsolete: RADIO or REFRIGERATION or PLASTICS or SATELLITES or ADVANCED_FLIGHT or ECOLOGY
	Active/Weight: 25/500
		Aim:
Build default number of players for this world size Colosseums (7 for standard)
		Result:
1.+1 happy face for every Colosseum
2.+4 culture for every collosseum
3.IF you control the Statue of Zeus wonder trigger a golden age

Quest14:
	Guns Butter
	Prereq: GUNPOWDER
	Obsolete: RIFLING or RAILROAD
	Active/Weight: 30/200
		Aim:
Build default number of players for this world size +1 Musketmen (8 for standard)
		Result:
1.All Musketman units gain the Pinch promotion
2.IF Vassalage civic gain 400 gold
3.IF you control the Taj Mahal wonder trigger a golden age

What I don't get..... How I can mod a civ to have 2 UU's and 2 UBs, and then another civ to have no UU, no UB, and no leader traits (ie financial, protective, charismatic, etc), and yet both civs still end up somewhere in the middle of the scoreboard, when one would thing the double UU and double UB civ would significantly outscore the no UU, no UB, no leader traits civ....

map, XML ... the AI aren't that good at (ab)using UU and UB to their best abilities, and traits are in the large picture kinda meh ... drawing a lucky map or having a good balanced XML coding (such as Zara's or Gillys) can bring a lot more to the table

This only happened to me once but I think it was an extra reward available from having the Taj Mahal. The option text when I won the quest cracked me up: "Enjoy your Golden Age of Muskets".

You don't need a quest to get a golden age from the taj; that's what it does. I think you mean the statue of zeus?

Negative. In the Guns and Butter Quest the third option is a Golden Age, provided you control the Taj.

Well, I would think the traits would make a big difference.
Financial should help alot in general.
If the civ goes to war, aggressive or protective should help alot.

Other traits are more specific to certain build orders and such.

I know when I make an "Atlantean Civ" with pretty much all the UU and UB, and a leader with all traits, and play as it, everything is ALOT easier (makes a good civ to try out a higher difficulty level).

How do favourite civics work? Does the AI just look on you more favourably if (say) you have vassalage and it is their favourite civic?

Yes. You get some positive diplomacy points, the number varies with the leader.

You only get the diplomatic bonus for civics choices when you are running THEIR favorite civis AND they are running THEIR favorite civic simultaneously. No other civic affects diplo with that leader.

Shared favorite civic bonus starts at +1 diplo, and grows over time to some maximum level, (both rate and max diplo limit are leader-dependant).

OK. I was playing on noble again. This time I manage to get first place in score, then my neighbour Zulu DOW on me he was 6 of 7 in score. I start to build army to defend my nearest to Zulu city. Zulu lost first battle but somehow Zulu manage to build bigger and better army than mine in just couple turns, so he easily defeated me :( Game over. I don't get it where is my mistakes?
