QuizTime: Warning - don't scroll down.

The way I look at them is this:

TWOT is like an ice cream cake and SoIaF is like a steak dinner. Both of them are very tasty, but one is a sugary treat and the other is a meal.
I've nothing against ice cream cake, it's one of my favorite treats. It is not, however, dinner.

There's no reason whatsover to wait for the entire series to be published before reading A Song of Ice and Fire. You see, every new release will give you a reason to re-read the entire series - what could be better?

I personally think that A Song of Ice and Fire is superior to The Wheel of Time. The characters seem much more real, and I care much more for them, whereas a lot of characters in WoT simply annoyed me. The first few books of WoT were interesting enough, but I think the story really started to drag around book 6-7. I once read book 1-6 in the series, then I gave up. Later I decided to give it another go, and this time got as far as the middle of book 7. The story just seems to die down at this point, don't really know why. I have great respect for the diverse world Jordan has managed to create, the various people that inhabits it(I especially like the Tuath'an - in a way I think that "The Tinker and the sword" is the saddest chapter in the books), and the books certainly has that epic feel to them. In the end I think it was the lack of really interesting characters that bothered me and made me lose interest. I simply didn't care that much about what happened to Rand, Egwene and Mat anymore, whereas I never think I will lose interest in the fates of Tyrion, Jon and Arya.

I'm ASoIaF fan, clearly, and have not even began the Wheel of Cheese saga. My finacee has (and she is the one with whom i read ASoIaF) and says I should read them. My book fanatic friend agrees that there is a putzing in books 6-7, he warned me about that, but by 10 and 11 the books recapture their former glory and then some. I'm hesitant, because I hate "lulls" in entertainment, but its worth it, i still may give it a try.

Granted, ASoIaF creates in me a sense of urgency about reading them that other novels do not. Arya, Jon, Bran, Davos, Eddard, Dondarion, Daenerys, Tyrion, Jamie (yes Jamie), and the like are what make me involved in these characters lives, I care what happen to them. GRRM is very good (and very evil) about grabbing ahold of your metaphysical cohones, and creating gripping story arcs that support characters, not vice versa.

When you hate yourself because you start to like a villan. You know you're reading GRRM. Blast you Littlefinger!

But you've been eating it for a while, and there's no ice cream left, so you're really just scraping up crumbs for the flavor.

But after a one month break from icecream cake, you try it again and love it.

This has to be the oddest thread.

Civ Game Ratings -> Knowledge of Fantasy Books -> Discussion on ASoIaF -> Comparison of ASoIaF to TWOT -> Comparison to Food -> Disscussion on confectionary habbits.

Nice slogan, unfortunately there's no freedom of speech nor freedom of the press in FfH land "/

Yeah, well Kael enforces this non-offtopic law, that's all I'm saying.

Kael likes the community getting along, i think whatever happens to push us in that direction he's quite happy with. Be it on or off-topic. A strong community produces strong support for a strong mod to a strong game. Lots of strength to spare. A little off-topicness is ok when it produces such wonderous ends. Also, he really asks that the main threads remain ontopic, cosmetics, bugs, balance, and overall concepts. Most threads and most posts are in fact on topic, any thread that diverges only does so breifly and usually even off topic threads go somewhere on topic. Human communication isnt static, and to attempt to force it into boxes will be to the detriment of all involved :).
