Skin cancer is the most common cancer with over 1MM new cases every year. It is primarily a disease of older people so you won't see it unless you know a lot of people over 60. Exposure to lots of sun (UV) at an early age is the prime cause. I wouldn't worry about it ... a bit of tan won't hurt, there are few construction workers who get skin cancer, even though they work 8 hours a day in the sun, sweating.
