I saw Thunderfall's announcement that Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon has been made available as a free download from Take 2, I guess to publicise the new Railroads release.

"What does that have to do with a Mac?", I hear you ask as your mouse heads for the Next Thread button.

Well, it runs in DOSBox. And DOSBox is an open source DOS emulator that has been compiled to run on lots of platforms, including Macs - both PPC and Intel-based.

Turns out you can run it in a window on your Mac :)

[EDIT] You need to find a PC or emulation to run the executable. That will create a folder that you place somwhere on you r hard drive - I put it in ~/Documents.

- Install the OS X version of DOSBox
- Copy the appropriate version of Preferences to your ~/Library/Preferences folder
- I edited the Preferences file to use a window by changing the line 'fullscreen=true' to 'fullscreen=false'
- You probably also need to do something with sound, as it isn't working properly on my setup
- Run the OS X DOSBox
- In DOSBox, type: mount C <the path to Railroad Tycoon folder>
- Then type C: to change to that 'disk'
- Then type RRT

Eg. Here's the sequence on my system just prior to hitting return to start the game:

Interesting- thanks Alan! I never played the original, but might give this a try.

A quick google search showed several different versions of DosBox. I'm always a little nervous downloading these things, so would someone mind giving more specifics of version/site that they used successfully? I'll be running it on a Powerbook g4.
