Random Raves XLV: You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet

Could have sworn this was the Raves thread, so why's y'all ranting?!? ;)
Conversation drift.

Rave: The new pizza place I started using (the old one changed its loyalty program, wiping out all the points I'd accumulated, so I said to hell with them and switched to a different place) sent me a nice discount code for a large, 4-topping pizza. I plan to use that tonight.

Not a bad ratio.....until i wrecked it by posting.

<Zkribbler pulls out a map, calclulates the distance from the Philippines to Red Deer, then falls to his knees, and weeps piteously.>
The pizza I ordered is 14", extra sauce, normal cheese, with pepperoni, sausage, tomatoes, and black olives as the toppings. I just finished a couple of pieces, and it's very tasty. :D

The cost: $11.99 CAD, plus GST, delivery, and tip. Total cost was $19.84 CAD (which is much less in USD).

Oh, and I just finished my daily NaNo words. Update in the A&E thread. :yup:

I was setting up some music to listen at work, and it happens that one singer I sometimes listen to had a new protégée, so I ended up with her song. Didn't recognize it, obviously, so I had a look at it.

And gawd. I think that's one of the few times that I see a girl so gorgeous, my brain actually bugs out. Like it can't process the information and needs to refresh. I honestly couldn't both listen to the music and watch her, so I still have no idea what it sounds. It might be (and probably is) commercial crap, but I still just got some sort of positive visual trauma.

Spoiler The girl :

Yes.

But you're right, she's gorgeous. And her voice isn't bad either.

Completed two major projects. Only two left.

I've also been meeting my deadlines. I approach deadlines in a weird way: I impose a personal one on top of the deadline imposed by the client. Usually a day or two before the real deadline, and I also break big projects into smaller pieces with day-by-day deadlines. I've missed a few personal deadlines, but none of the client deadlines. I missed the personal deadlines because I focused on different work first, and not because I was simply procrastinating.

So for right now it looks like I'll be hitting my targets with time to spare.

@Synsensa Under promise and over deliver. :)

My secret has always been, just make sure you set the proper expectation. You can be slow if that is the expectation. The people that get in trouble are always those that set expectations way too high. Yeah, sometimes you have to commit to something uncomfortable, but usually you have way more control, as long as you're willing to take it.

^Yep, that's how to do it. You have to deal with the customer's expectations. Just make sure that you get paid.

When making proposals it is also good to remind clients that most work revolves around: price, quality, and time. They get to choose any two as most important.
Its a pretty good rule of thumb.
  • Low price, high quality takes a long time
  • A short delivery time and high quality cost more
  • For a quick turnaround at a low price, quality suffers
  • Quick turnaround at a low price for high quality work is a dangerous path

And the most important, if you want changes, it will take longer and I will charge you more.

@rah Yes, change orders cost money.

Snorway refuses to keep along with the ‘drill, baby, drill’ mentality!

Here on the other end of the world we have idiots pouring gazillions of dollars into fracking an oil field with the surface area of Belgium rather than developing the wind industry in a region with permanent winds strong enough that they can support you if you lean against them. Because of misguided ‘nationalism’. I hope the Snorwegians' movement means we have a better precedent to follow than the Caribbean's.

I honestly couldn't both listen to the music and watch her, so I still have no idea what it sounds.

Rose-cheeked Laura, come,
Sing thou smoothly with thy beauty's
Silent music, either other
Sweetly gracing.

These dull notes we sing
Discords need for helps to grace them.
Only beauty, freely loving,
Knows no discord

But still moves delight,
Like clear springs renewed by flowing
Ever perfect, ever in them-
Selves eternal.

It is, and she is rather attractive but not enough to make me want to watch the entire videoclip or listen to it either.

A rave indeed. Of course it makes sense in terms of climate change, but it makes even more sense in "don't crap where you eat" terms. The cod resources in this area are hugely important and a potential oil spill there would be devastating.

Cracking sports analysis on my local NPR station this morning: "The Red Sox are still figuring out how to play better." I think I'll be laughing at that for the rest of the day. Awesome.
