Random Thoughts XV: Temere Cogito, Ergo . . .

Reading a book called The Dead Beat, a tribute to obituaries and their writers, I was amused at the author's descriptions of how to access Usenet. She was writing in 2004-2005. On a whim I did a search and saw that there's still a usenet community! Something to look into when I'm not so busy with schoolwork.
Please report back to us.

One of the best-paid (in the order of millions of dollars/year, iirc) Twitch streamers just got a two-week ban.
The reason he was banned was that he called palestinians an "inferior culture", justifying it by saying the palestinians would be killing more israelis (than israelis kill palestinians atm) if they had the ability to.

I mean, it was a very stupid comment. Likely the ban wasn't a bad idea, given it's just two weeks. Twitch wouldn't permaban one of its most lucrative assets.

Asmongold did apologize later on, but it wasn't taken favorably.

What about that Dr. Disrespect guy who was banned for inappropriate relations with a minor? Never got into twitch -- the only gamers I watch are youtubers who do compilations like CallMeKevin, RT Games, Let's Game it Out, etc.

I don't watch Twitch either, only stuff about it on Youtube if it happens (Youtube puts it front and center with its algorithms).
I don't get political streaming. Afaik Asmongold isn't a political streamer (he was a gamer guy originally), but apparently he felt like saying stuff and now regrets it.

That will happen when someone's talking off the cuff!

Didn't he film himself walking into a public bathroom where a minor happened to be present? Or was that someone else. The mullet guy with the bar shades, right?

Asmongold still screwing with twitch by refusing to do the official partner thing? That's how he doged them for years be able to play default ads on his channel, he just didn't take the cut from them. Did they rectify it or are they finally risking strong arming him?

Note: if you ever make it on Twitch, don't go on political rants ^^
Asmon really messed up and the worst imo is that he kept saying that this is his honest and deeply-held view. The apology afterwards would have been lame regardless, but now what's there to apologize for, are you planning to go to therapy or something? ^^

I would guess it's the money.

Speculation on if the fall of Israel would result in more than ~40,000 casualties in a year are... cute. I guess? But really, the only people that actually care about what a WoW player speculates on that are the people milking him for their bonuses.

I am not sure that's true, though, given currently it is very easy (due to polarization) to rally people even if you don't mean to. Clearly there are a lot of people who share the view Asmon presented.
As always, the debate on this is very low level. Hasan, another intellectual heavyweight (and fellow Twitch millionaire) of Asmongold level, is the equally underwhelming living banner of the opposite "team".

That I don't know. According to Wikipedia he was engaging in inappropriate communications with a minor via Twitch's "Whisper" function, which I'm guessing is a PM function. Twitch permabanned him and YouTube demonetized him. It looks like he did get suspended from Twitch before this from walking into a public restroom while streaming, though. And yes, mullet guy.

I can't imagine watching a gaming streamer.

If you're watching a stream for entertainment, just go play the actual game. If you want gaming strategy, go read whatever the meta amongst the competitive community is, which can be done much faster than watching a video. Read speed is much faster than talking speed. Pivot to video is terrible.

Is it easy to rally useful people? Or just gossipy ones(he says as he gossips).

I mean, we are on twitch for this conversation. As noted, where you go when one isn't rising to the occasion of playing games.

I'm personally convinced that the game streaming phenomenon is sustained by the same things that drive celebrity culture. Just watch the high profile people, debate the moral worth of their views and deeds and relationships.

It's about discerning a social most effective tactic available. Meta.

I suspect most are interested in the Asmongold drama because they want to see if the conversation itself is socially acceptable. The insight that many of us may be taking cues from this dude and a financial interest(Twitch) on what is and is not socially acceptable is kinda dark.

Tbf, if Asmon had stuck to just playing games, he'd likely had faded by now. For better or worse, political views are the lowest hanging fruit and they don't need to change or you to be good with them so as to share. All those main streamers (also) talk about general stuff or disappear.
I pondered whether this would be better as its own thread, but a) I don't think it'd be a thread with much more to say on it (well, not by me anyway), b) imo it remains pretty "random thoughts".

Insofar as random has "disconnected" as part of it's meaning, this is starting to resemble more a thread.

I'm not complaining, by the way, just observing.

I don't even know what Twitch is.

Ok, just googled it, so I've got the basics.

I watch gaming streamers. Like Sommerswerd said it's just like watching pro gaming, some of them are really talented. Some are also quite funny. Besides that I've got a broken and bleeding nose so gaming is often quite painful. Watching doesn't hurt.
