great job razing the first Roman city. As long as they don't get iron, we should have no issue to take them out.
And even better that we found iron :goodjob:

by the way, there is no mention about the research. if we research writing, we should start a prebuild for the GL.

woops I forgot about the palace thing... but I think we can still make it after all it was only 20 shields & you can switch the spear to the palace... sry for not paying attention so much...

Also the Dutch built the Collusus for us :mischief:

Preturn: Looks reasonable. Switch an Archer to Spear as we will soon have Swords for offense.

I would have taken a Spear to cover the Archer stack. I may also explore a bit with it. Attacking Capitol with 3 Archer won't do much.

IBT: Roman Archer comes from Rome.

1225 BC: Switch Nanking to the Palace.

1200 BC: Built Colony for Wines as it is not within a border and we have no culture buildings ye.t
Kill Roman Archer.
Move onto Iron to Connect. Change Beijing to the Pyramids so we don't build the Spear (will go for Sword).

IBT: Archer attacks our Archers - we win.

1175 BC: Rome does have some Iron to the south.

1150 BC: We get our Sword and start it South.

1125 BC: Kill a Dutch Archer.

1100 BC: Kill a single Spear in Cumae to the south and it autodestroys.

1075 BC:

IBT: Got Writing going for Wheel.

1050 BC: We have 3 Archers vs 2 on a hill. We do terrible - All 3 do a total of 4 hp of damage to them killing none. Our defense of the southern Iron is gone.
A Sword attacks a Spear in Antium and does zero damage. This round was truely awful.

IBT: Archer attacks Spear that was cutting the road. We win.

1025 BC: Kill a Spear in Antium but also lose an Archer. Actually it is on a Hill which is probably why the Sword lost.

1000 BC: Sword is waiting for Dutch Archer.

Notes:
Antium currently had only 1 Spear in it (1025 BC). We have a Sword on the way and there is an Archer/Spear near it. A worker is hiding inside

Rome has 4 cities including the Capitol. Given the location of Iron behind the lines, I think we need to concentrate on him until Rome falls at least with elimination being preferable. It also looks like we will only have 1 front when that happens, so continue pressuring Rome.

let's take out Rome for good. I would wait for a stack of maybe 4-5 swords to do the job. On emperor, the AI would have 3 spears in the capital at this moment I assume.

By the way, ansar, if you can't play by tomorrow, let's swap as I am leaving for holidays soon.

by the way: it is really stupid how incompetent the AI is. Why did they irrigate so many grass tiles which give absolutely no bonus at the moment? Someone should release the code of C3C so that modders could rectify all this nonsense.

I frequently play autoworkers games as a challenge (it's an extremely hard variant on deity) and it makes you tear your hair out. I started next to a cow on plains (next to a river), and they mined it!!! That doesn't change F, S, or G. Then they proceeded to irrigate every BG in sight. I made it to the IA as the biggest due to successful wars, but my most productive city with rails and factories and all made 30 spt or so (because everything was irrigated).

Heading for Deustchland?

(Sure. I'll probably have a lot of homework tomorrow anyways.)

It breaks my heart when I see the AI irrigate the BGs.

save

Pre-Turn
MM a little to get wheel at +2gpt. With 2 swords in the field, I don't think I will be able to attack Rome that much. :(

IT A dutch archer appears and we need to retreat workers

1.975BC
reduce science to 60%

IT 2 Dutch spears and a sword appear next to our iron, in fact one climbs the iron
we get wheel

2.950BC
I think we have played this too optimistically as our towns are empty and the iron not covered. Manage to kill spear and archer and get rid of the threat for now, but we need defenders back home.
Retreat attacking force for now

The good news is that we have horses. Go for literature now in 10

IT We are lucky as the sword that attacked the iron covering spear/archer combo dies redlining the 3hp spear

3.925BC
I can barely cover the cities with units. We will get pillaged and another Dutch sword is looming near our iron
Xinjian was swapped to a rax and starts a spear now

IT Instead of pillaging the Dutch spear climbs a mountain
the sword freezes, lucky we face the Dutch pot :smoke:

4. 900BC
cover cities and get more swords to the front

5.875BC/B]
Not unexpectedly the Dutch spear heads for the lux, we cover it with a sword, there are Roman archers coming closer as well

IT Tsingtao is the AI magnet and 3 archers and 2 swords head there

6.850BC
use our first cat to bomb stack of 2 archers, then take out 3hp archer while redlining elite sword
cover iron hill with spear and sword

IT more units show up including 2 Dutch swords

7.825BC
bomb 1 sword, need to leave the other alone

IT win against a sword on defense

8.800BC
redline a sword but manage to defeat intruder spear in our core
defeat archer on flat next to the iron hill

MM every turn to guarantee 4 turn swords from capital, this means 8/8/7/7 spt to maximize overflow

IT elite archer kills our iron hill covering sword (there is another archer underneath)

9.775BC
defeat 3 Roman archers and he coast is clear for now

10. 750BC
defeat Dutch archer and ping a sword on mountain

situation:
there is a settler pair going for the border to Rome. We should try and assemble a proper force of swords and go after Rome

Literature is in next turn and we should go for HBR and some fast units to be able to retreat. I think we should then head for monarchy and not wait for the AI to research that for us. W have to wait a long time for the GL anyway

Don't forget to MM our capital for 8/8/7/7 as painful as it is. (maybe once it grows to pop5, we can get it to 10spt)

We got to be careful as Rome has HBR and horses, they might come with them after us

The Dutch switched where their attacks were coming from. I in fact put 1/2 our swords (i.e. 1) on the line where the dutch had appeared before. This is why the Iron wasn't covered - there was no indication of the threat in that area and the sword was in the wrong place. There was an Archer covering the area but this is obviously not enough with swords appearing (note that the Dutch had only shown archers and only 2 in my turns) .

A note to trainees is that one strategy to counter this is to rush units. This costs population so you don't want to do it unless you have to, but it can be an additional way to quickly defend an area you weren't expecting an attack. Fortunately, we did have enough units not to have to do this.

Good to see our Palace down to 27 turns. It will still be a while until the GLib though.

I realized after I played that Philosophy might have been good gamble to try rather than Wheel right away. There was a decent chance we could have gotten currency or map making for free if we had. Not that it truly matters as we are hopefully going to get the GLib.

For tech after this, I would head for Monarchy or HBR (my choice would be HBR then CB since we have horses) and keep our science up until we are fairly sure we are going to get the Great Library.

I was also surprised to see 3 Dutch units pop up near the iron. Add some Roman archers to the front as well and defending 2 towns that have both no defender inside becomes a problem.

Now the situation is well under control. I hope the next player can assemble a force of 5 swords and capture Rome for us. There is no need to abandon the city this early in the game.

I do agree with the tech path. As I outlined, we should get HBR, then CB, mysticism, polytheism and monarchy regardless of the Glib.

I am very sorry (and embarrassed) to say that I must drop out of this SG.

I realize school is beginning to slowly eat up all of my time, with homework and especially all the books that the teachers have assigned for us to read.

I'm VERY sorry.

@ansar, sorry to see you drop out. Don't study too hard...there is more to life than that ;)

I'm kind of paranoid about grades, but I usually manage my classes with at least a "B". :)

I don't really study much, it's just reading a book takes SO long for me cause' the books are always so boring!

Sorry to hear that you are moving into lurker status, Ansar. I guess school is taking out many of our younger players right now. That has to take precedence over fun and games. Graduate with honors, go to a good college, and then you'll have a job that allows you to loaf around playing Civ:D BTW, this is my "got it" post, I will play tomorrow evening, if all goes as planned.
