Rate the Song Above You

The 0 demarcation is not the best one--I frequently don't finish songs I like.

The singer's voice is muffled, and it sounds like his voice is about to break. 3/10

Repeating the same lyrics over and over, without any other words to it, does not make for good music. 2/10

NickyJ, I would argue the most refined music is actually the most repetitive. It means the artist has managed to tap into something so quality, and so human that he can keep it going for an impressive amount of time. It's the opposite of simple pop sensibility and appealing to the common denominator, it's about finding an essence and bringing it to its fullest. The best pieces are the ones you can listen to on repeat for hours on end, from classical explorations of the perfect harmonious tension building geometry of sound to Jazz variations on scale to a repeated spoken lyric to an entrancing electronic drum beat.

Now the song you quoted I'd give a 7 for my taste and an 8 for quality (not knowing its impact at the time). It's a pop song and doesn't have the degree of repetition I'm talking about. It's more like your Cowboy songs, but successfully drawn out about 50 seconds longer than a less ambitious writer would have made it.

Beat it was my favorite song as a kid so I'll give it 10/10

Let's see who can handle this. RIP Donna Summer.

That was.........all over the place, for lack of a better way of saying it. 4/10

My mistake, upon listening to it again, I heard the rest of the lyrics. I guess they blended into the "viva la revolution" chants. Doesn't change my rating though.

Yeah I mean I wouldn't expect you to like it, nor do I want you to. I just want to say that successful use of more-than-normal repetition is a sign of advanced music rather than the opposite.

I have already decided that Nicky J might as well be 90 due to his music complaints :p

I never really understood what was so good about Weird Al, this one is ok I guess 5/10

4/10 Not knowing what they're saying probably hurts the rating. :p
