Rate this decade

It's a bit premature to be rating the decade when the decade still has a year and a half to go.

I suspect the defining question will be, "Where were you when you heard about the planes hitting the Towers on September 11?"

I hope the Vancouver Olympics go well in 2010 (yes, that's this decade).

Personally... this is the decade I finally went online and got way more computer literate than I used to be. I eventually made my way here and found a place where I can comfortably discuss politics and religion with a great group of international people. For me, that's one of the best things about this decade.

You've just described elected democracy everywhere in the world.:goodjob:

true, but you know what i mean.

Besides, Chavez isn't anywhere near as bad as western media protrays him, much of everything is blown larger then it actually is.

For example, people claiming he was dictator and the next castro because he made a new timezone...

People taking environmentalism too seriously
I feel the exact opposite. You can still read dozens of newspapers & barely see anything at all about the environment (granted the NY Post isn't much of a standard but it's what gets left around the subway & streets & whatnot). Even people who claim to be hip to environmental concerns are often just posers.

Good :

  • More public awareness of the ecological consequences of their actions
  • The Internet is still free & uncensored :)

Bad :

  • Another critical period when we could have taken drastic action on the environmental/ecological/saving civilization front that we instead dawdled
  • Trillions spent of war that could have been spent to enrich Earth & humanity

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

on the one hand good cuz it was fun to me personally, on the other hand bad cuz its the last decade before peak oil causes civilization to collapse which will be even an awesomer time cuz I will get to spend all day in my ecovillage eating nutritious energy bars made of grass and lemur poo

Good:
People are becoming more environmentally-conscious
Ever increasing internet speeds, hdtv, assorted other cool tech
Gay rights, not yet achieved, but were on the path
49ers might get new stadium closer to me

Bad:
9/11 and other terrorism
Economy in the tank
Bay area sports team haven't done well.

I'm not so sure in this environment. How do you justify a stadium at almost a billion dollars with all the crap going on in California? Sports teams never generate tax revenue in the local community in excess of the bonds for the stadium.

Absolutely horrible, both in my personal life and on the world stage.

0 on a scale of 0 - 10, with 10 being the best.

Well it's up to the citizens of Santa Clara to pay for it, not all of California. And the 49ers are paying most of the $1billion. Personally, I hope it happens since Candlestick is hard to get in/out of.

Whether or not it makes money can't be known yet, I hope it does. And hopefully the politicians in SF will stop acting like they deserve a sports team.

What's unemployment in Santa Clara?

A friend of mine did a report on stadiums. They are always a net loss if the government pays for them.

I don't know about the city itself, but the county (which includes my city, San Jose, as well) has about 11% unemployment. Santa Clara is one of the wealthier cities in the area though.

EDIT: Fiscally, yes, I realize the new stadium is probably a terrible idea.

Good:
I finally landed a professional job, at least for half of the decade.
Hybrid electric automobiles available commonly.
Gasoline has been around $2 /gallon on and off.
Bought a nice, used Honda civic.

Bad:
9/11, Al Qaeda, lots of conflict-related deaths, and nukes and ICBMs in the hands of loser countries.
Housing bubble, economic recessions, inflation, crap-out of the American car industry, and $4/gallon gasoline.
Totalled a nice, used car.
