Rate this decade

Good:
  • Technology
  • (Personal)I left the K-12 system and my family has stayed at about the same income level
  • Internet still mostly free
  • People who respect the idea of liberty coming together like never before
  • Still no draft yet
Bad:
  • Police state growing and still growing in America and around the world
  • Impossible to fly anywhere without retards rifling through your stuff, molesting you and your family and generally using all their ****** strength to make sure you feel violated, cowed and miserable.
  • Terrorism, both from the usual suspects and the government flailing around wildly trying to bat them off.
  • Wars of aggression and what appears to be empire-building.
  • Despite going to war seemingly to acquire oil, the price increased anyway.
  • World heating up and nothing can be done to stop it.
  • Africa still hell-hole when it could be so much more
  • People still jerks.

It's a bit premature to be rating the decade when the decade still has a year and a half to go.

[...]

I hope the Vancouver Olympics go well in 2010 (yes, that's this decade).

2010 is not this decade. 2000 wasn't the '90s either. The decades are defined by being the years which have all digits except the last one in common.

It felt a bit shorter than the 90's and it leaves with a greater sense of pessimism for the future.

We've seen some polarization throughout Europe. Populist politicians are on the rise all over the continent. This will only reinforce fortress Europe, and many more will drown while trying to get across the Mediterranean. This is definitively a bad thing.

On the other hand, we've seen some nice things happen too. While the US made a false start with dubya, they recovered quite nicely, and I'm pretty positive about future international cooperation.

Well tonnes of other stuff happened, but I guess most has been said already.

Wikipedia is wrong.

Since the calendar we use starts at year A.D. 1, the first decade was A.D. 1 to A.D. 10. Therefore, the 200th decade is 1991 to 2000.

Yes, if you're talking about the 200th decade, that might be true. But when you're talking about the '80s/'90s/2000s/whatever* it makes absolutely no sense to say that 1990 is in the '80s (for example). "The eighties" as a decade is defined by its years being ninteen-eighty-something.

*(which is by far the most common way of expressing it - no one says "the 200th decade".)

For practical purposes however people consider the 70's as 1970-Dec 31 1979, etc.

I don't agree, but I'll let the subject drop.

Considering that I turned 15 on the year 2000, this was clearly the best decade for me. The 80's were fun too, of course, but one gets tired of afternoon naps and playing in the street park. The 90's were the worst. Who likes school?

I did.
