RB16 - The Renny Teamer

My $.2 is that the Southern front is doing pretty well; we will have a heck of a battle to take Texcoco I think, but once that is done, Monty is either finished completely or reduced to complete irrelevance. Forces remaining could then push around into Toku's backlines, pillaging Genghis, or if they are strong enough, start taking/razing Mongolian cities.

In the North, there will be some significant battles ahead, as Tokugawa has some decent garrisons remaining, along with Mongolian help. We have a decent force array that is getting into position there, but roads to the front line are badly needed to improve the logistical situation.

Home front, WW and our econ are the two greatest concerns IMO. I'm not sure the game will last long enough to get to Facism and Police State, so we should probably try to get the furs hooked up from our new southeastern city ASAP; also, perhaps slip in a temple or two into build queues of cities with theatres. Another possibility (I don't know how feasible it would be) would be to go for Notre Dame - if we have the resources it might be worth the time.

Just took a quick look at the save and have a few comments:

  • WW is up to +14 in our capitol and rising quickly throughout our empire. As quick as it is rising I honestly don’t see how we could make it to Police State before the game is over. I’m thinking we might wish to consider stopping all research at this point and start building up our treasury. That way later on we can increase our culture slider and eat away at our savings.
  • St. Pete should be switched to a theatre to lessen WW. Honestly I think all of our cities should probably build a theatre soon.
  • With as high as WW is and the fact we have captured Teoti… I feel we should destroy Monte completely. If we just knock him down to ignorable we’ll still feel his effects in the captured city. If we wipe him out Teoti… won’t constantly want to revolt back.
  • We have the civic Hereditary Rule yet are only keeping one or two units in each city. Should we build more defensive units to increase happiness? I honestly hate to do so as it would be more effective to build Cossacks.
  • Just noticed St. Pete doesn’t even have any units fortified in it. I’ll move one there.

I’ll wait to play for further discussion on the above. I honestly don’t know if I’ll be able to play tomorrow so it could be Wednesday before I do. Will that be okay? I could play tonight, but honestly think we should discuss our plans.

lurker's comment: I'm guessing your war weariness is so high because you are at war with 3 civs. If you completely eliminate one of the civs, you should see a reduction in the amount of the war weariness. Although, I'm not sure if it works this way in a team game or not. But, if you focus on finishing Monty off completely, I would expect to see a significant drop in your war weariness.

Edit: My suggestion is not viable in a team game. Eliminating one civ of a team does not reduce the war weariness at all. The entire team must be eliminated before the war weariness will go away. And, in this SG, that would be the end of the game.

Spend a couple of hammers building some cheap garrison troops. The payoff is too big to ignore if it saves a single unhappy face from going on strike.

If you can establish a bolthole in the target territories having a place to call our own out there will also help reduce WW and cash outlay. Every trooper in enemy territory costs money.

Let the allies do some of our research for us too. Turning down the science spigot at htis stage won't hold us back any from whoming on the Aztec. Japan and the Khan could be a different matter but they are not on the immediate hit list.

Eliminating the Aztecs will cripple the enemy team's research, they will never advance and it is likely that your Cossacks will always be the best unit on the battlefield.

Also consider that England and France will suffer the same financial problems as you when they start fielding really large forces.

I'm also curious if Cossacks will be the most advanced unit we'll need in this game. If so than I don't really see a need to continue research.

Due to our friends getting sick it looks like our family plans tonight got cancelled, so I should be able to play my turnset later on tonight.

Sorry, going to have to ask for either a swap or skip. A friend of ours came in on a business trip last night and will be here untill tomorrow, so it doesn't look like I'm going to have time to play. We haven't seen him in a while so Civ must be set aside.

My apologies.

I'll take the swap and play it tonight.

Turn 165 (1750 AD)
Teotihuacan begins: Courthouse
St. Petersburg begins: Longbowman
Novgorod begins: Longbowman
Rostov begins: Cossack
Troop postions are a little scattered and there is a cat at risk in the suburbs of Edo.
1750.jpg

And the situation at Texococo is "fluid" with Mongols with grenades running around
1750_01.jpg

Not to mention the odd Elephant. They can't kill us but they can hurt. And the cat in Texococo can put a little burn on our cossack stack.

Start some cheap MP at home, then go to the friends and ask that they switch research to Chmeistry so we can make some hay off Replaceable Parts. It should be worth it. but it wasn't. Allies games play differently (doh!) I accept some hurting people in Paris as that is the price for Replaceable Parts.

Tech learned: Replaceable Parts
Rostov grows: 12
Archimedes (Great Engineer) born in Rostov
Much debate ensues in the Provisional Duma as to his employment: build Versailles but with only three cities the value is not that great, or Research Constitution which allows Representation which is three happy citizens in our three core cities. With the WW we are coping with the three happy faces look like a sure winner. But he will only get us about 1/3 of the way there. That still seems the best choice and then adjust research to get it in a reasonable time frame That is not much of a choice so let him sit for now and hire some science in Paris and in a few more turns we will have GA bait. We are about ten turns out from a Great Scientist.

I completely missed the forces at Osaka and paid dearly for it.

Cossack defeats (8.82/18): Japanese Grenadier
Cossack defeats (2.88/18): Japanese Longbowman
Cossack defeats (8.82/18): Japanese Longbowman
Cossack loses to: Japanese Longbowman (0.06/6)
Cossack loses to: Japanese Longbowman (1.02/6)

Whip some attackers on our border patrol in the east
Cossack defeats (12.24/18): Mongolian Grenadier
Cossack defeats (9.36/18): Mongolian Grenadier

Turn 166 (1755 AD)

Get sheep from the Corporal and some ivory from Vick and that helps with the health at Paris and the happiness everywhere

Much as I would like to make a march on Texcoco decide my best opportunity at the moment is a tactical withdrawal of most forces to reduce cash outlay, get the troops healthy and hope to jackal in in Texcoco

In the north I start gatheinrg some forces for Tokyo.
Moscow finishes: Heroic Epic That will really help!!

Novgorod finishes: Longbowman
Rostov's borders expand
Rostov finishes: Cossack

Turn 167 (1760 AD)
Pick off some strays east and west
Cossack defeats (18.00/18): Japanese Samurai
Cossack defeats (15.84/18): Mongolian Knight

Moscow begins: Maceman I need cheap MP garrisons
Moscow finishes: Maceman
St. Petersburg finishes: Longbowman
Rostov finishes: Theatre

Turn 168 (1765 AD)

Rostov begins: Market as a longer term solution for cash flow and hsppiness
Moscow begins: Maceman for another cheap garrison
Moscow finishes: Maceman

Turn 169 (1770 AD)
St. Petersburg begins: Market
Moscow begins: Maceman
Moscow finishes: Maceman
Novgorod grows: 8
Novgorod finishes: Cossack

Turn 170 (1775 AD)
Moscow begins: Market now I can get to a solution that allows growth
Novgorod begins: Pikeman

Looks like a perfect opportunity for the jackal corps at Tokyo as Vick is making her move on the town.
1755.jpg

There is also an opportunity at Texcoco as the Little Corporal has started his march into the hills.

1755_01.jpg

Teotihuacan's borders expand. When the resistance at Teotihiacan ended the culture button was pushed and the border expansion got us some game and furs.
1780.jpg

That in itself put an end to the healthy and happy problems back home. WIth a furs to trade I look at the allies and try to figure who needs them Vicki's cities appear to have more unhappys so she gets a nice new beaver....

Turn 171 (1780 AD)
The Queen did a good job on the defenders at Tokyo while the Little Corporal got whacked around pretty badly at Texcoco. Russian troops are heading in for the kills
St. Petersburg finishes: Market
Rostov finishes: Market
Teotihuacan finishes: Courthouse helped by some forestry operations

Turn 172 (1785 AD)
Rostov begins: Cossack
Begin the assault on Tokyo with an accurate cat and the defenses go to zero.
Since Vicki softened him up pretty good it's time for a Cossack sack of the town.
Cossack defeats (12.96/18): Japanese Longbowman
Now for a pinch promoted attack on the musket
Cossack defeats (8.64/18): Japanese Musketman
And another pinch promoted Cossack on the grenadier.
Cossack defeats (11.88/18): Japanese Grenadier
And don't forget the seige weaponry, could have killed it with a warrior
Cossack defeats (18.00/18): Japanese Catapult
Captured Tokyo (Tokugawa)

Teotihuacan begins: Catapult
Moscow finishes: Market
St. Petersburg grows: 11
St. Petersburg finishes: Cossack
Novgorod finishes: Pikeman

Turn 173 (1790 AD)
Bomb Texococa down to 20% and kill a few strays while waiting for the cats to do their work and for some reinforcements to heal The Khan's knights in the open are another matter so they are removed from the battlefield.

Cossack defeats (13.68/18): Mongolian Knight
Cossack defeats (18.00/18): Mongolian Knight
Cossack defeats (15.84/18): Mongolian Knight
Cossack defeats (15.84/18): Mongolian Knight

I'm a little doubtful that the Cossacks at Texcoco can do the job aginst 20% city defenses so I am going to wait for another round of bombing

St. Petersburg begins: Cossack
Novgorod begins: Catapult
Moscow begins: Cossack

The Corporal is coming with Cavalry now so things should go better at (texo)Coke
Zu Chongzhi (Great Scientist) born in Moscow
Novgorod finishes: Catapult

Turn 174 (1795 AD)
Khan has dropped Samarqand in a really unpleasant spot as it threatens the fur and deer trade route.
Cossack defeats (9.36/18): Mongolian Knight
Captured Samarqand (Genghis Khan)
It is however easily converted to the Russian cause.
It is an expensive holding however.

Cossack defeats (10.80/18): Aztec Grenadier
Then I misclick and kill a grenadier at Texococo. Better to be lucky than good, I guess

Two more stone shots however and the town is ready for the taking.
There is a nicely promoted Combat 2/Pinch Cossack waiting...

Cossack defeats (15.30/18): Aztec Grenadier
Cossack defeats (15.48/18): Aztec Longbowman
Cossack defeats (18.00/18): Aztec Musketman
Cossack defeats (15.48/18): Aztec Grenadier
Cossack defeats (13.68/18): Aztec War Elephant
Cossack defeats (16.20/18): Aztec Catapult
Cossack defeats (16.20/18): Aztec Catapult
Captured Texcoco (Montezuma)
8 hits, 8 runs, no errors

We get our Scientist but I will leave the Golden Age for the next player.

Then clean up some miscellaneous Mongols threatening Texcoco.

Cossack defeats (11.88/18): Mongolian Grenadier
Cossack defeats (13.50/18): Mongolian Musketman

Samarqand begins: Courthouse

The Japanese have Nara at Satsuma, but the English are on the way to take it down. And do.
Research begun: Chemistry
Moscow finishes: Cossack
Rostov grows: 13
Taoism has spread: London (English Empire)

Turn 175 (1800 AD)
Moscow begins: Cossack
Moscow begins: Maceman
Tokyo begins: Courthouse
The troops are all healed up at Tokyo and ready to rock. The troops at Texococo will take a bit. The end of the war with the Aztec has not accomplished much when it comes to reducing the WW. WE still have to run 40% culture to keep every body smiling even with marketplaces everywhere. But at least it is manageable.

There are troops on go to orders to both Tokyo and Texcoco.

Other items of note are that the newly captured towns are buildling courthouses and have workers set to chop the trees nearby of the law library bookshelves. However, when the resistance ends punch the culture button for a turn or so to get the quicker on turn border expansion then finish the courthouse.

Teotihuacan is building a Cat (with no barracks) and should probably continue until we have enough cats in the stack to support the advacne into Mongol lands.

Rostov has been alternating cats and pikes for support of the advancing seige engines.

Everybody is researching Chemistry as cannon will be a big help once we get deeper into the Khanate and Shogunate and start encountering some heavier defenses.

The citizens are managed for gold and we are keeping our heads above water, but not by much.

I may have played this a litle conservatively, but I really hate losing troops when the front is so far away. Both East and West groups are relatively healthy. The West gorup can continue to advance on opening and the GP's are there to kick off another Golden Age.

Looks like a decent turnset!

Just one thing though...

"so she gets a nice new beaver...."

Too many places you can go with that one that aren't even close to being appropriate on these boards! :mischief:

And Cape Cod sounds like an American address in the New England area. Consider that is American slang...

It's a hat, boys, a hat!

Turn 175 (1800 AD)
Methos: According to F8 we control 60.29% of the land and they control 26%. Subtracting their land we get the needed 74%. In other words, we're getting really close to reaching the dom limit.
Golden Age begins
Methos: First thing I do is initiate a Golden Age. This increases us from +1 gpt to +39 gpt. May adjust slider, though I'm not entirely sure that's best.
Methos: I begin moving our Japanese front into enemy territory. I should be within firing range in three turns.
Methos: Our Mongolian front I leave in Texa... so it can heal.
Methos: It's my understanding that overflow can't exceed the cost of the build causing the overflow. So I MM Moscow to keep the loss of overflow to a minimum. I hire several merchant citizens.
Methos: I up our science rate to 20% which still gains us +23 gpt and Chemistry will be complete in 13 turns.

  • Moscow is currently building the Globe Theatre (done in nine), but I honestly think this game will be over by than, so go ahead and switch it if you wish.
  • Two rifles, one grenadier, three longbowmen, and a cat. That is what is currently defending the Mongolian city of Karakorum. We have seven Cossacks within attacking range. Napoleon has a bunch of units near the city, with several within attacking range.
  • We currently control 70.45% of the world and only need 74% to reach the dom limit. The Axis (er.. the Mongolians) control 15%. Samarqand expands in six turns, Texcoco expands in four turns, Ning-hsia stops revolting in two turns, Kagoshima stops revolting in six turns, and Tokyo expands in nine turns. In other words, the next player should achieve a Domination victory.

A couple more things:

The worker south of Moscow that is chopping the forest will have its hammers go to the English city. Is there some way we can get it to go to Moscow?

I had to raise our culture slider to 50% to remove some of our unhappiness. I don't believe this is going to be a problem as I'm expecting the game to finish during Speaker's turn set.
