RB8 - Multiplayer Madness

Regarding getting Archery, I'd suggest that either one of the civs had it queued up somewhere, or that you had some beakers in it which were somehow made enough to get it by picking up other techs which reduce the total needed. Seems pretty unlikely, though *shrugs*

Wow, I'm surprised at how are score is compared to theirs, I thought we'd be a lot lower. If we can, I'd be really interested in finding a demographic showing them 100 or so turns ago, just to see if we've caught up or what's going on there.

Vicky and Roosevelt might have contact with Russia and China now, but that contct was recent, they were probably alone like we were (just a guess). Our ability to grab Christianity signaled that we were not too far behind, as did our missing The Great Library (even though we had Ind. and marble  ). The AI is in  CoL, they beeline for it everytime (not a bad strat really), and too a lesser degree they beeline for every relegion tech (also not a bad strat as relgions are nice and almost all of the religion techs are coupled with useful civics). I think this game is coming along nicely, some thoughts on that engineer- Versaillies would be helpful, Notre Dame would be good too, if that has not already fallen (I can't remember). We don't need to use him on tech, we are not far enough behind. Anyway just some random thoughts... What do others think?

I can play on Tuesday if someone wants to, I will be up on MSN.

The engineer was used on the Hanging Gardens already.

But, you are right. We are in a hole, but we can certainly climb out of it! I've climbed out of worse holes than this (see my adventure 2 report) and I didn't even have a partner.

Ahh, but we have another engineer. Japan got one during the last turnset. ;)

I think Notre Dame is better than Versailles for now, as Versailles is only very useful in large empires....which neither of the two really are. Besides, we are currently working on lots of courthouses, so Forbidden Palaces could be in our future. I can't remember if (besides it being a world and not national wonder) there is any advantage to Versailles over FP. Anyone?

the advantage is that it is like a 2nd Forbidden Palace, so imagine you build Versaillies on the home continent thus allowing you to build your FP in conquered territory :hammer:

I think happiness is crippling us more than distance modifiers now. I'd personally vote for Notre Dame, although Versailles is a nice choice too. Notre Dame would impact both civs, however, would complement the Hanging Gardens that we just built very well.

Can't believe I missed the fact we popped another one in the report. guess I should read more carefully!

Agreed, happiness is more of a problem than distance costs. Vicky and FDR have music, so they might have notre dame, a good check of the log might prove frutiful. They won't trade music so maybe they are buidling it, that might be a good reason to use that engineer on Notre Dame, simply to deny it to them and get ourselves some happiness, then trade them Theology for the cash they accumulated when their Notre Dame attempt failed, how do people like that idea? Other thoughts?

I am available to play today, sorry I could not play last night Snap, hwk etc.

@Snaproll

Say tonite at 7 or 8 pm Eastern?? How is that for you there in the Mountains?

Atlas and I have played, posting later tonight. It was quite eventful - founded islam in Germany, met the other two civs, built 1 wonder with two more on the way, and are gearing up for a samurai invasion.

Alright, here we go! Atlas and I played 20 turns, and things are really looking up. My thoughts and pictures are a bit jumbled because I don't have much time, but I hope you can get an idea of how things are going.

I forgot to take overview screenies of the empire. I founded 3 new cities in Germany this turn, and I believe Atlas founded one over in Japan. I feel like our civs are finally maturing.

Here is the tech situation when we started (pretty grim!)

01_start.JPG

We are behind, but it won't last

We were researching optics and finishing up the Sistine Chapel at the start of our turns

02_sistine.JPG

Sistine Chapel and Optics finish in two turns, and then it's time to talk strategy

So after those finished it was time to figure out what to do. A few options presented themeselves. Beeline for astronomy to speed the invasion? The sooner the better, but we had a great engineer and no wonders to use him on (Notre Dame was already gone) and no one had founded Islam yet. So, as you can see, we decided on Divine Right -> Civil Service (for Samurai) and then Astronomy.

03_strategy.JPG

You can see, the strategy paid off, and now we each have a religion

We also decided that Germany could benefit from Versailles more than Japan, so Atlas loaded him up on a Caravel and sent him my way. He rushed Versailles a few turns later (and the next player will get to look forward to finishing it on his very first turn!)

04_gp_trade.JPG

22 turns = 1 chop, which is already done!

During the turns, we both popped Great Merchants. I sent mine to scout out the American / English lands, and Atlas sent his to Russia / China. The idea is that they can scout out the territory and then complete a trade mission.

Great Merchants make great explorers

(Obviously, these pictures aren't coming in strict chronological order) You notice that we've met Peter and Mao by this point. They are not NEARLY as far ahead of us in tech as the other team (stupid financial civs).

The final team

And, there's no better way to transfer our final thoughts than a screenshot of our closing conversation:

Our guidance to the next team

Many thanks to Atlas - it was a blast to play with him!

Good luck next team!

Lurkers request - please narrow the pictures to no more the 800 bytes wide. I was having a hard time reading the report.

Anyone planning on grabbing this game this weekend? Things are looking up! Should be a fun set of turns.

Ok, I've got responses from most of the remaining players and there is still a lot of interest in keeping this going. We are dropping the rule about playing in consecutive turns - play whenever you can.

Part of the problem, I think, is incompatable instant messaging. For instance, right now I see Chriseay on AIM, Drasca on Yahoo, and Atlas on MSN, but none of them can see each other. Suggestions?

I use trillian, which combines all the instant messenger programs into one interface.

lurker's comment:
I can see mismatched IM being a problem. Part of the reason I didn't give this a try as I don't use any of them. I hated the constant interupption when I was working on other things.
