RBC7 - Austrian Fascists C3C Patch 1.12

The goal of this game is to explore two features new to C3Conquests,
the government of Fascism and the civilization of Austria. They are
'hidden' to keep under the 32 civ hard limit, but with a simple BIQ
change they're available. Their UU is the Hussar, a cav replacement with
7.3.3 ADM. The map will be standard size, 60/40 pangaea, restless barbs,
and all opponents random except historical foes Ottomans and Germany.

To get the right mindset for the game there are a few variant rules:
- Feudalism should be the first govt tech we obtain and we must revolt
to feudalism asap. Up to and including this government there is no xenophobism.
- On obtaining Military Tradition we must revolt into a Monarchy (reflecting the
Hapsburg dynasty), and can no longer purchase or merge in foreign workers. Our
fear/hate of other civs is on the rise, and the mindset turns more warlike.
We're more prone to reject tribute demands at this point.
- We must research/obtain Fascism with all due haste in the Industrial.
age, then switch to it immediately and stay there. The goal from this point on
is to run over the entire earth with our Hussar, with a Conquest or Domination
goal. Style points (so to speak) if we can do this before Infantry and Tanks appear.
Preferably shut down research and once rails/factories are done, possibly new bldgs.
It's likely we won't need any libraries/universities at all. Even cathedrals are
unlikely with a good chance cities won't exceed size 12.

(Obviously this isn't "efficient" but will allow a good comparison of the various
govts in one game, and will add somewhat to the difficulty)

The politics in this game will be a blend of history and 'what-if', to give
some background to the idea of a Austrian Fascist SG game. For more info see:
http://www.encyclopedia.com/html/section/austria_history.asp

After several invasions by Huns, Ostrogoths and others, Austra was established
within the Holy Roman Empire by Charlemagne in 788. In the 11th and 12th centuries,
Feudalism was at its peak in Austria and several towns along the Danube rose to
prominance. Thereafter it became ruled by a King of the Hapsburg line. In 1526,
Austria, Bohemia, and Hungary were united under the crown of Ferdinand. Vienna was
sieged by the Ottomans but held out. There would be many more power struggles and wars
over the next centuries. Charles V was the Hapsburg Empire around 1519, and he essentially
had to rule both Austria and Spain. Their army would come to promote Hungarian light
cavalry known as Hussar. The Hapsburg empire was large and sustained, until it suffered
defeat by the Prussians in 1866. The period of 1867 to 1918 saw a dual Austro-Hungarian
Monarchy. This started with a reorganization of Austria and Hungary - a compromise where
the independence seeking Hungarians and the strong centralized desire of Franz Joseph.
World War I started with Austria at the center, and its current boundaries were fixed
in 1919, where political union with Germany was disallowed. This made for a somewhat
small country with 7 million inhabitants, mostly in Vienna itself. Engelbert Dollfuss,
the chancellor in 1932, favored fascism, and it wasn't until 1955 that military rule
was replaced by a Republic. For the purpose of this SG, the leader will be
Franz Joseph, and an alternate 'ending' of the rise of fascism in this country.

Here is our starting location:

Austrian Fascists - Demigod, Standard, 7 opps, Restless, rnd climate
We're military and industrious, with 7.3.3 Hussar (cavalry) UU.

Franz Joseph I (aka Franz Charis) arose to lead his fledgling nation to glory.
His people, the Austrians, had a keen sense of national spirit, and there was growing
expectations that the government could deside best for their needs. Currently some
called Franz a despot, but he sought to develop a system where the individual
cities could manage themselves for the good of the nation. He knew there would be
much tinkering needed to get it right, but this was his vision for the nation.
Franz sough to rule about 50 seasons to get the nation off to a good start.

4000 - Starting location, river, directly ON a cattle. That's a nice one. We
move NW one square to get off it, keeping on river, while worker starts to irrigate.

3950 - Vienna is founded, and it reveals two wheat in range, actually a third
one just out of range, wowza. We start research on Pottery at max.

3700 - First warrior done, start another, for exploring.
3550 - Prebuild started for granary.
3300 - We spy our the orange borders of our first neighbor. How fitting tis
the Ottomans, who we will want to cripple before their Sipahi.
They have Bronze and Ceremonial but lack Warrior Code. We can get no tech for it,
just 35g, and I hold off for now.
3250 - From a hut we get Ceremonial Burial, and from a second, three warriors.
There however we meet an Enkidu warrior of Sumeria. He has Bronze and Pottery,
but lacks Masonry and WC. Pottery is due next turn for us, so I trade Masonry for
Bronze and 5g. The next tech we would like is the wheel, but the AI are likely to
beat us to that, and we can't get it too quick. So I start min sci on Iron.
Sell WC for 35 and 5+Pottery. Next turn our western warrior beats a barb.
3000 - Happiest nation list: Vikings, Germans, Sumerians, Hittites, Ottomans,
Zulus, Arabs, Austrians. Rough crowd! Bursa has been founded in our direction
and our settler will probably want to go east to the river wheat where it will also
catch the ivory, to oppose this poaching by the vile Ottomans!
2710 - We meet up with the Zulu, two archers near our capital, as a barb shows up
too. I swap to Archer :p They have all our techs plus Alphabet, Wheel, Iron, Myst.
Sumeria has Wheel and Myst, Turks have only Myst and lack Pottery. There's no 3-fer
and even the 2-fer is expensive. I wait and hope for another contact.
2590 - Salzburg is founded to stem the Turkish tide.
2550 - Ottomans start the Oracle.
2470 - Where to send the second settler? He can stay close and share the two wheats
or go further and own the third wheat. Just because I don't want to encroach on Vienna,
I pick a non-overlap spot.
2430 - Two new color warriors show up from the south. It's the Vikings and Germans.
Viks have Alphabet and Wheel and lack CB and Masonry. Germany is up those two plus
IW and Myst, like Zulus. Ottomans have shown up with Pottery and are ahead Myst.
Sumeria is up Wheel and Myst. We'll want to get a tech other than Alpha-Wheel and
trade around. That means Iron Working - bought from Germany for 130g+5gpt. IW to Turks
for Myst+55g. CB+Mason to Viks for Alphabet+27g. IW to Sumerians for Wheel+50g.
Myst to Vikings for their 18g and civs except top two are broke. Germans and Zulus
both have HBR.
2390 - Innsbruck is founded, and we start on some workers to take advantage of our
industriousness. Vienna makes a rax to take on the mil unit duty. Germans,
Zulu and Germany have writing (good research, Ragnarak).
2150 - A pink scout is seen, and Arabia is down only Alphabet.
The Hittites are well met, lacking Masonry and Mysticism but having HBR. We trade even,
and that's the final civ to be met.
2110 - A hut is popped only to angry warriors, but our archer defeats a camp.
IBT Unfortunately a barb horse then kills our archer. Trondheim finishes Colossus.
2030 - Settler done and we see horses to the west... that's our spot.
1910 - IBT Berlin finishes Pyramids, and starts up on Temple of Artemis.
That will be a brutal combo in the hands of the Germans on this pangaea.
1830 - A settler is ready, and that iron hill on the river to our NW looks
yummy. The plain-forest between iron and game looks best but the next leader can pick
which exact spot. He also gets to pick to attack a barb camp or hit a hut with our NW
warrior scout. Germany now has Poly, btw. The spear in Vienna can go with the settler
while it makes a new spear - if you do, slide up the lux slider to 40!
Salzburg mine should finish, then road and keep on workin'. A mine was chosen to speed
up the temple so that we could pull in the ivory.

The red dots are unprioritized thoughts on cities. (Ignore the errant dot right next to Vienna!) The iron/game/river spot is top priority, then possibly something on the East side.

At this point the people cried out for change, to let someone else lead the nation.
(Next leader should take 10-20 turns as appropriate, and the next leader 10-15, then
10 each turn after that)

RBC7 Austrian Fascists Save File 1830 BC

Players note!! Included in the save zip above is a PediaIcons.txt file which
replaces the original one in the Conquests/Text folder. It adds to the original so
it need not be swapped back out. Backup the old one if you wish first, then replace
it with the one in the zip.

I would love to take part in this. (i want to play as Austria, it's a nice neighbouring country). Is this slot still open?

Checking in.
Looks like a pretty good start there. It also looks like a long bloodfest ahead with those neighbors!!!

I also agree that after the iron city we should grab some land in the East before it is all gone.
:goodjob:

Gah, miss a day at the forums around here and find two SG rosters that are almost completely full, and a few more in the works! Since I missed both the defiant nationalist games and the "scientific" themed games in the past, I'm very interested in the Sumerian game if you find that there's a spot open. I'd be willing to participate in this game, though, since that one looks to be full.

When you're up, 24hrs to post a "got it" notice, and up to 48hrs after that to finish and post your turns. Things come up from time to time of course, but repeated violations will lead to being dropped - let's keep this moving smoothly :p

Thanks all,

:D The Austrian Civ seems to be popular, must be the traits and those excellent UU.
But I must say we never were industrious, I really don't know where Atari gets it's informations
Good luck with this one.

Maybe they were just "rounding out" the attributes, or used a dartboard approach?

IHT: As suggested by the former despot, the new leader Aggie sends a settler towards the iron hill. Cautious as he is, he also sends a spearman for defense. As a result, the luxury rate has to go to 40%.

IT: The Hittites want us to leave their territory. I apologize. The Arabs start with the Oracle.

1790 BC – Zululand and Sumeria now also know Polytheism, but we can't afford it. Same story with Writing, which Sumeria lacks :(
A warrior dispersed a barb camp and earns us 25 gold. However, it is red-lined and another barbarian warrior is near.
The workers south of Salzburg finished the mine and started roading the tile.

1790 IT: The barbarian doesn't attack the wounded warrior

1750 IT: Osman comes for a visit: “Bestow gifts upon your superiors and you are likely to be rewarded a hunderd times over. Ignore the advice of wise-men, and you risk being flogged about the head, neck, face and shoulders.” After reading the variant rules again, I give in and Ozzie leaves in peace :(

1725 BC – Vienna finishes a spear and starts a settler.
Arabia and Scandinavia now also know Poly, but Arabia doesn't know about HBR and Alpha. Sumeria doesn't know Writing yet. The Hittites know Writing, but not Poly.

We sell HBR, Alpha and 9 gold to Arabia for Poly. The Hittites give us Writing and 25 gold for Poly.

Germany, Zululand and Scandinavia know Map Making. We have 225 gold and make 5 gpt. A hut reveals three barbs :(

IT: One barb attacks the warrior, but our hero survives. Sumeria starts the Temple of Artemis.

1700 BC – Krems founded NW of the Iron, starts with a warrior. The spear in Graz goes to Vienna, since within one turn a warrior will be trained in that city.

IT: The Hittites and Arabs also start with the Temple of Artemis.

1675 BC: Graz finishes the warrior and starts training a worker. Our deal with Germany expires, we make 12 gpt!

IT: Our warrior in the east kills a barb and promotes.

1650 BC: That warrior now opens a hut and finds more barbs. The exploring warrior in the east is healed and kills a barb, but no promotion.

Germany learned the tech Mathematics, but they won't share the knowledge. Arabia has 62 gold to spare. Before someone else can, I sell them Writing for 62 gold.

IT: Three barbs decide not to attack our warrior in the west.

1625 BC: Vienna: settler->settler. I sell the Ottomans Writing for 44 gold.

IT: The Hittites started the Orcale.

1600 BC: Spearman arrives in Vienna and lux can go down to 30%. We make 15 gpt and have 376 gold. The Zulu and Ottomans now also know Math.

We buy MM from the Vikings for 374 gold and 1 gpt. The Ottomans pay Math and 58 gold for MM. The Vikings now give us 189 gold for Math. We are tech leader :hammer:

1575 BC - Krems: warrior -> worker. The warrior goes to Vienna. Salzburg whipped to produce a temple next turn. It already is under cultural pressure of Bursa :(

Vikings know the tech Construction and Philo. Germany only knows Philo. Construction is too expensive. Buying Philo doesn't sound like a good idea atm (no 2fer1).

I decide to build an embassy in Berlin for 44 gold. Germany still needs 30 turns for the Temple of Artemis. Germany doesn't have contact with Sumeria and Arabia. I also build an embassy in Trondheim for 58 gold. They do not know Sumeria, Arabia and the Ottomans. They are at WAR with Zululand.

1550 BC: Slazburg finishes temple and starts barracks. Graz finishes training the worker and also starts barracks. Our western warrior spots 5 Arab warrrior travelling north. Their purpose is not yet clear and they are 4 tiles from Krems.

IT: The Zulu start building the Satue of Zeus. The Arab warriors move further north.

1525 BC - Vienna: settler -> settler. The settler and spearman of Vienna leave towards a spot east of an oasis. Now luxury has to go up to 40%.

IT: The Zulu and the Germans sign a MA vs Zululand.

1475 IT: A Sumerian archer enters our territory near Vienna  The Vikings start the TOA (rtemis)

1450 BC – Krems: worker -> granary. The borders of Salzburg expand and Ivory is now within our borders. Lux can go to 30%. The Sumerians are asked to leave for the first time. Salzburg is switched from barracks to a spearman. I don't trust the Sumerians :(

Germany now also knows Construction and the Ottomans know Philosophy. A 2fer is possible now if Construction weren't too expensive.

IT: The Sumerian archer leaves :) Our warrior in the east is killed after a sneak attack of two barbs.

1425 BC – Vienna: settler -> settler. Lienz founded and the training of a worker is started. Settler/warrior from Vienna go west, towards the spot south of the tobacco.

1400 BC – Innsbruck: granary -> worker.

1375 BC – Salzburg: spear -> barracks.

IT: The Arabs settled 4 tiles south of Vienna. The Sumerians now send a Enidu warrior/settler pair north.

1350 BC – Innsbruck: worker->barracks.

1325 BC – Vienna: settler -> settler. Forrest chop on the game tile near Krems started. I build an embassy in Istanbul for 34 gold. They will finish the Oracle in 3 turns. Osman is now polite to us and doesn't know the Vikings, Hittites and Sumeria!

The tech situation hasn't changed. Germany and Scandinavia are up Construction, Philosophy. Hittites don't know Math yet. Zulu and Ottomans know Philosophy. Sumeria and Arabia don't know Math and MM.
One settler is almost at the spot near the Tobacco. Another is still in Vienna. The horses of Graz are almost connected with the rest of our empire.

Very nice set of turns Aggie :goodjob:

I particularly like that for a while we became tech leaders
Not bad for a civ that is rather indifferent to eductation.

What also looks nice is the mini-map. If we're left alone, we're going to have quite a large area in our backfill region and a very nice production base for later. It's also good to see other nations at war with each other and ignorant of their neighbors.

RBC7 Austrian Fascists 1325BC-1075BC

Following the untimely, but hopefully only temporary, demise of Emperors Charis and Aggie, a humble, but learned, monk arrives from the Western Isles to assume power in Vienna. He finds a kingdom of great potential

Our Muslim/Pagan neighbors are polite/annoyed with us. The cod-eating Scandinavians are polite, but cool. The Zulu are also polite to us and at war with Germany and Scandinavia The Germans are polite

Open an embassy with the Arabs and improve their attitude to polite

Decide that objective for this round will be peaceful expansion to the north and west so head settler in Vienna towards coastal hill north of Linz and will pick up escort at Linz

After brief pause for prayer and meditation push enter

IT Graz barracks to warrior Arab warrior stack (4) emerge from West Marches Sumerian Enk/settler pair emerge from south heading towards West Marches

T1 1300BC Workers work Settler moves onto hill south of tobacco Will found next city right there, Has access to BG, game tile, river, tobacco

IT More Arab warriors (2) show up west of Graz

T2 1275BC Kufstein founded west of Graz start worker Check in with neighbors. Philosophy is on offer for ~200g from everybody that has it. Still too expensive as there are no
brokering opportunities, the rest are too poor

IT Shaka and Otto sign peace treaty Salzburg barracks to warrior Ozzie completes Oracle Sumerians start TofA Arabs start TofA and GLight

T3 1250BC Workers work

IT Vikings call on us want alliance vs Zulu and ROP. Ragnar is now up Philo, Construction and CofL but wants too much for any of them Turn him down Barb horsemen emerge from fog NE of Lienz but gallop back into it toward Turkish lands We learn polo from Arabs and Innsbruck finishes barracks and starts polo team (horseman)

T4 1225BC Vienna grows Raise lux to 40% Tech leaders are now in MA Trade maths around to Gil and Abu for net 60 and use proceeds to open embassies with Shaka and Abu Everybody who matters has Monarchy so shut off research for 3gpt

IT Otto calls and demands 30g, cave Vienna makes settler starts warrior Salzburg makes warrior starts warrior Gil starts ToZ

T5 1200BC Settler and spear head west from Vienna

IT Ragnar and Shaka sign peace treaty Graz finishes warrior starts warrior Lienz finishes worker starts barracks Otto starts HG

T6 1175BC Workers working

IT Abu calls and wants 30g and gets it Vienna finishes warrior and starts settler Salzburg finishes warrior starts worker Otto starts SunT

T7 1150BC Found Bischofshofen on coast start barracks

IT Otto starts MausofM Shaka starts HG

T8 1125BC Workers working

IT Insbruck finishes horseman start temple

T9 1100BC Working more

IT Vienna finishes settler starts warrior

T10 1075BC found Eisenerz west of Vienna start worker Ozzie lacks Monarchy and Gil will sell it to us for MM and 25gpt Buy it Ozzie will give us Philosophy, CofL and 10g for Monarchy Sell it Abu will buy Monarchy for 32g Sell it Mursilis will offer 68g for Philosophy Sell it

I have probably been too conservative in trading for techs as we are waay behind the leaders. I won't presume to make any suggestions for next better player. Treasury is in good shape, however as deficit will be made up as roads are finished.

Looks like a solid set of turns, Bede. You made good use of brokering opportunities, so I wouldn't say you were overly conservative. Monarchy is kind of expensive, and we are guaranteed not to need it until after we're in Feudalsim, so there was no rush on that optional tech. A nice job overall for the Monk from the West Isles!

It's not a great sign that everyone is starting to demand tribute now. Ottomans was a wise cav, but I can't even SEE the Arabs and would have told them to blow it out their hind :p

Like the Sumerian game we're in good shape with land. Settle to the North first. If anyone dares settle to our west they are *so* toast at a time of our choosing. So keep up the expansion and stay close in tech. Once in Medieval ages we're going to definitely beelline Mil Tradition, everything else is a distraction. We'll want a strong production and economic base and several rax already in place by then so we can rock and roll all over the continent.

Got it --- with a question.

According to the variant rules, " - Feudalism should be the first govt tech we obtain and we must revolt to feudalism asap." So we shouldn't even be touching/have touched Monarchy or Republic with a 10 foot pole right now, right?

Oops. The horse trader in me saw an opportunity and seized it.

Ok, didn't see their presence in the map. Poaching first ring are they?!??! :hammer:

It was ok to buy Monarchy, just unnecessary at the time -- but if it was a good deal, it was a good deal. Don't touch Republic unless another civ throws it in for free - we'll never be a Republic.

Good luck, oh viscoelastic colored gelatin!

Well, I was going to do some role-playing for this game, but there really is nothing funny about Fascism and the whole Hitler/Aryan race thing is just way to sensitve to poke fun at, so I'll just settle for some interesing facts about Austria and the Hussars every once in a while.

Austria had one of the most powerful cavalry forces of the Napoleonic Era with around 45,000 horsemen under arms. It was a mix of the traditions of Europe's east and west, drawing many men from Hungary and the Balkans, as well as southern Germany. Austria's tactic of attacking in two lines often came unstuck against the French use of columns.

Hmmmm....45,000 horsemen means at least 60,000 horses. That's a heck of a lot of horse poop to shovel!

************************************************
Preturn: Sell Code of Laws to the Sumerians for 11 gpt. This 20 turn 25 gpt set of payments to the Sumerians are going to be an economic killer, but it did create some trading opportunities so it is understandable. We need Construction to get to the next age though, and no one is parting with it right now. We really need to get out of Depotism, but we need Feudalism for that, not Monarchy. Of even graver concern is that soon we are going to have freakin' exodus of other civ's settlers trekking through our lands towards our deserted backyard, and we don't have any settlers in the works, much less a good settler factory other than Vienna. Already 2 Summerian pairs and an Arabian pair have already slipped through our lands. On the plus side we have a fairly good supply of workers! :goodjob: Optimize Vienna for food and switch to settler. Insbruck switched to Settler.

1050 BC (1) We get the Forbidden Palace message. A bunch of Civs start the Hanging Gardens. Graz (Warrior->Warrior) We may need some barricading troops.

1025 BC (2) Hittites demand Code of Laws - We show him the door instead. Salzburg (Worker->Horseman) To help in Barb clearing? Trying to set up a blockade of the 2 Furs/River site from the Summerians. Construction is more widely known, but expensive still. Currency is known by two Civs.

1000 BC (3) Innsbruck (Settler->Settler) Continue blockade

975 BC (4) Summerian settles on our NW coast. :( Vienna (Settler->Settler). I can get a very expensive 2fer to get into the next age, but we would be broke. I keep waiting for the laggards to maybe get construction/Currency so we could trade Monarchy for it, but that may take a while.

950 BC (5) I decide to get the 2-fer and not wait, as experience has shown sometimes the laggards take forever to get techs. 448 gold to Norwegians for Currency. Currency + 37 Gold + 4 gpt for Construction from Summeria. We're in the Middle Ages. Germany drew Feudalism for their free tech, Summeria drew Engineering, and Ottos have Monotheism. (This is going to be a fast tech pace!) We are now very broke and there is going to be a whole lot of trading going on without us in the next few turns. :(

925 BC (6) The Summerians and Arabs are at least taking out some Barbarians for us. Arabs form a town in our outback. Graz (Warrior->Warrior) Landeck (Temple->Market) As expected, the leaders have passed around their respective techs.

900 BC (7) The Ottos demand 19 gold and I cave. (We only had 38 gold, sheesh!) Trade Currency to the Arabs for 76 gold.

875 BC (8) Vienna (Settler->Marketplace), Grems (Granary->Marketplace), Lienz (Barracks->Worker) Summerians start Sun Tzu. Bruck is founded by the two river Furs.

850 BC (9) Ottos and Vikings start Sun Tzus. Uhmmm...just shuffling workers and directing a mass migration of Austrian citizens.

825 BC (10) Innsbruck (Settler->Settler) Eisenerz (Worker->Temple) We have 4 settlers headed Northwest. The one by the coast/river on hill should settle there next turn. The one on the plains should probably settle on the coast next to the horse and sugar. The other two need to race some of the settler pairs to get the last 3? spots on the peninsula. I suggest we save up for a steal on Feudalism, because there is no way we could afford it otherwise (I think).
