Just wanna say I am here

:band:

The question is, will our opponents be happy or sad that you are?! :P Good luck on your turn (I take the above as 'got it') and see what you can do to get us a step closer to Feudalism.

PS Hey RJ, I like the added flavor pieces, and yes, that's a much better move than Fascist humor :crazyeye:

Someone needs to alk about "The Sound of Music" Austria (Julie Andrews and the Barron Von Trapp. Viener Schnitzel, CooCoo clocks (or is that the Black Forest?), Motzart, Lindzertorte, coffeehouses, and all the civilzed stuff Vienna (Waltzes) and Austria are famous for. Coffee with whipped cream, pretzels, pastry. And an Imiperial army that loved wargames with dice until they found out it was very hard to bet on the outcome.

So, I apologize NOW for all the mistakes I made. :) sorry:

Good job mitsho. Despite the apology I don't see any problem with your turn. A sneak attack is a sneak attack, not your fault unless you empited a city and waved free workers in front of their noses :P

Minor comments: Selling Monarchy (a very expensive tech) for 40g was probably unnecessary unless you were trying to prop up a weak AI. Also, leaving our iron city undefended is a bit dicey.
Marketplace in size 1 corrupt city is :smoke: (but not harmful)
Probably a good idea to build at least one swordsman to 'scare' them.

So we're at war with the Ottomans??! Whoever is up should beat them mercilessly, give them a very serious thrashing for their insolence!!! Oh wait, I'm up?! Muhahaha!! :hammer:

Ottomans are top dog and almost runaway in culture, so they definitely need to be cut down a notch. They're in Monarchy, we're Despots. Our military is weak compared to them. We have three horses to our name, 6 spear, and 10 warriors. Sounds like a fair matchup!

That was what I call a 'random event' war. There was really no reason for it, they were unprepared and send baby troops to attack us. (A warrior? Sheesh)

There may be a 2-fer opp with Mono from Sumer to Germans for Feud. Or 3-fer with Zulu Feudalism and Engr Germans. Or we can spend our money to pull Vikings into the war - If Vikings have their Zerks, they would do well for us.. (I tend to favor 8 turn wars, not 20 though) Germany is another option, but expensive.
War happiness will let us kick lux to zero, for +49gpt. If any thoughts on alliances/techs, speak up!

(PS EDIT to Aggie -- *GOSH* I hope the massacre goes the 'right' way!! If recent good luck holds we'll do ok, but if I see 15 MDI stream down the road on hitting enter we're gonna fold like a deck of cards?!)

Franz Charis was called to power when the young nation was thrown into a war
by an aggressive and cantakerous bully, the Ottomans. There were several paths
in front of him, and the choice of direction was critical. Plan A would be to
seek a 3-fer brokering, Monotheism from Sumerians, for Engineering from Germans
and Feudalism from Zulus. Such a deal was actually VERY useful, and if neglected would
not stay around. Plan B would be to pull the Berzerk-fueled Vikings into war against
the Ottomans on their rear flank. This would increase our chance of surviving (or
taking a tech at the end), but would lock us in war for 20 turns. Also, if we went
with plan A and the trade worked, would we revolt, and would we survive?!

Franz consults his 'Game Theory' advisor, who lays out three scenarios for the two
plans. I) The Ottomans got caught picking on the wrong civ when they nothing in place
for a real attack. II) They're not ready yet, but between turns 6-10 start seeing
a bunch of MDI start to come in. III) They're ready, and 1-2 turns from now not just
MDI but maybe even a Knight shows up. I is nice of course, under both A and B.
II strongly favors a limited war and the tech trade, while III will be an awful
nightmare for both. It would be huge to have a beefy ally, but 20 turns of that
torture would be agony. Troubled with the decision, Franz goes to sleep on it,
and has a dream of another great nation seeking a new government, Mongols actually,
who were bullied just like the Austrians and who cleaned the aggressors clock with
no army, no cash, and during Anarchy. So inspired he was of the dream that he made
his decision. He had to see if the dream was luck, or real. Trade and revolt is the plan!

Looking more closely, Germany has all three techs 8-\ So do the Vikings, while the
Hitties are backwards and Abu can give us nothing. The Zulus have Feudalism. We might
not be able to buy in!? I set all rax towns to horses as we'll need to sell them
to the Zulus. Landeck is our border town, with no rax and making 4gpt and it's half
done a marketplace, doh! We'll need to swap. Rax or reg sword? The latter wastes
1 shield not 11 and We could sure use him up there. Nearby Salzburg has a rax anyway.
Krems also swaps to a sword with no shield loss. At 30 shields to go on temple and the
city undefended, we can't wait, and don't want to waste 2 citizens to rush.
Lienz whips a vet sword, as there are spears coming. Eisnerz whips a sword.

Buy Engineering from Sumeria for 145g+41gpt. Talk to Shaka. How about our only
horses, our only furs, Engr, all our 216g, and all our 15gpt?? No???!!
Franz Charis' face gets all red and he says that he would be leaving his office
with either Feudalism or war. When it was phrased that way... I withdraw the furs,
cut gold to 205, payments to just 6gpt, and for Engineering, Feudalism is ours!

Franz wants to try to insure non-aggressors stay out, so he negotiates 20 turns of
peace with Vikings and Arabs, for RoP and 10g from Viks, and RoP+worker for 20g from
Abu. RoP with Bizmark for 12g to bring him to polite. Gilgamesh pays us 12g for RoP.
The Zulus refund us 4g+2gpt for RoP.

Oops, those swords due next turn are now MDI. We swap to Pike to get next turn,
since a revolt is coming. Innsbruck swaps to MDI done next turn.

Franz Charis pulls the trigger towards Feudalism, and we are in anarchy for 6 turns.

[0] 610 BC - Outside Landeck we pop an archer with our horse.
IBT Their archer counter loses, promoting our horse. Three units move into Bursa.
Ur completes Statue of Zeus right as they start it? SGL? Zulus swap to Sun Tzu.

[1] 590 - Two pillages, as troops move up to Bursa. Can we get to their iron?
IBT No. They lose a sword and MDI, but beat a spear heading to the iron.

[2] 570 - Already we're seeing differences from Franz's dream. The Ottomans
DO have at least some MDI, and the defenders are Pikes, not spears. We will NOT
be taking any cities this war. We can pick off some units, pillage a few, and
have an ok defense, but not more.

Our warr beats the loose archer who got our spear, and a pike covers him.
IBT Sword beats warr. That's it? Good, not a steamroll war!

[3] 550 - Hmm, we have extra horses outside Villach. I move to road there.
Two pillages including horses, though at least one will die to sword for it.
IBT MDI beats the pillaging war, sword beats pillaging spear. MDI loses to
our iron-mtn pike, and promotes it.

[4] 530 BC - Horse beats a plain spear trying to pillage us in the NW. We
pillage their iron. (Do they have more?) Then the square next to it, which completely
cuts off Bursa from their nation. This too will lead to death, but even if they
have tons of units now, they won't reach us in time. (Besides, pike was red)
IBT Indeed down they go, two losses. Trondheim finishes Sun Tzu.

[5] 510 BC - MDI defeats warr and promotes to elite. There's 1hp sword we can
reach with elite horse... dare we? We do. Hope for a leader... nope. But we win.
Hrm, two foreign stack right next to empty Gmeund?! Eep! Phew, they're settler pairs.
Hey! Anarchy is over next turn!! Let's reconfigure...

IBT No attacks even on our exposed horse?! Cool! MDI and archer move up toward
Bursa but are crawling. Three civs start Leo's.

[6] 490 BC - After getting down to zero gold, we're not at +21gpt, yay!
Well, we bump lux to 20% and retweak, After tweaking the tiles again, we're at +11gpt.

Like in his dream, the king of the foreign aggressor is in shock AND shame that
he got beaten back (after bullying) by a civ in anarchy with no army! :D
He's ready to give peace, for free. We see in the process that he has no more
iron and no horses

We have some elites, so let's press at Bursa. Softening horse absorbs a treb hit
and retreats. Elite horse retreats, MDI wins, warrior wins, gah!! One spear left?!
No more attackers. They have a MDI and longbow stepping up and will surely whip
a defender. We can partially cover with pikes. Go one more turn???
Let's try!! Our two last warriors step up into enemy territory.

IBT - MDI hits our pike and loses! Longbow however wins.

[7] 470 BC - Sumer completes Leo's.
Let's hit Bursa! Warrior goes to draw fire, takes off two hp and dies. The
Elite MDI redlines but wins (no ldr), just a hurt spear now, hmm, plus the
bow underneath. Then again, we only have a warrior and hurt horse. The
warrior beats the red spear, and an all-wounded battle for Bursa ensues. Elite horse...

RBC7-AustrianFascists-470BC.jpg

... turns out to be Mack, the Great Leader! :hammer:
And Bursa is ours! That pillaging turned out to be crucial and effective.
No more units could reach to defend, and no more iron or horses for them.
With a temple expansion, it's possible it might pull in both Iron AND Horses,
leaving Ottomans with neither. It's a flip risk however, perhaps significantly.

There's an Arab settler pair in mtns right next to horses. He could conceivably
settle on the hill and poach them, so I send units to block sites off. Our horses
in the west are now online. I confirm the Zulu horse deal is still active, good.
NOW we're ready to talk to Abu. Hmmm... not TOO far from Invention for all our
economy. Hmm... Vikings lack Invention and it might trade for Mono. I can't
otherwise get much cash from Ottomans, so let's try! Oh, not quite so close after
all. In fact, Monotheism is only close, which has nowhere to be bartered.
Sumeria wouldn't part with Monotheism, still 'in doubt' even, so the discount
is nice. Tough call, discount but no 2-fer. If 30gpt won't buy it and our real
income is only 14, just can't wreck out economy for that. We'll take peace for
all his cash. Very good, he has some credit, so we get full price for peace, 72g+6gpt.

Woohoo! Another triumph for not caving!

War happiness is over and we're sad. Trade with Zulu, Gems and Spices for our
Furs and 20gpt (no hard cash). Slider for lux now can stay at zero :P

[8] 450 BC - Some chops complete in our corrupt tiny western towns, and a few
new BG show up.

[9] 430 BC - Bursa gets whipped into the next century as the resistance ends.
Pop 4 to 1 just as we wanted, and much needed temple due next turn.

[10] 410 BC - Vienna hits 15spt, a horse per two turns. Hmm, there's a nice
trading opportunity here. For our only horses and iron and a few gpt we can
buy Invention from the Sumerians. The Zulus lack that and have Monotheism.
We could easily go 20 turns w/o and make *cheap* units for MP duty, since
Feudalism can use 3MP and Fascism can use *4*. I make sure every rax city that
can is on a horse or sword, then trade Iron+Horse+3gpt for Invention. To Zulus
Inv+3gpt+11g for Monotheism (needed for Chivalry, we need go *NO* further along the
top tree until we have Mil Tradition unless a good brokering comes up)
We're now 135g+9gpt. Almost the whole world is at tech parity, including us :P
(We lack Republic but will never get it) Arabs and Hittites are WAY behind. I would
avoid helping the Arabs, then take their poaching cities in about 20.
We lack one embassy, so I buy one with Hittites, and give 9g for RoP to get polite.
Hattusas has 4 spear with 8spt. In a Dr Jekyl and Mr Hide fashion, I have
Sumerians and Hittites pay for their continued peace, and then feeling pity
for just how backward the Hitties are, I gift the Monarchy to give them a chance.

Here is our map at the border now:

RBC7-AustrianFascists-410BC.jpg

Having successfully led the people not only through war but anarchy, the people
cheered instead of booed Franz Charis, and wanted to make him King. But the time
for Monarchy had not come yet - nay, we shall annoint whomsoever teaches us the
fine art of Military Tradition as Monarch.

Notes:
- The treb and warrior on the hills outside Bursa are keeping Arab settlers from
going there and poaching horses. Within 4 turns and the two city expansions, they
can leave. I think we'll pull in the hills, horses and iron on expansion.
- Spekaing of pulling in, our culture is so poor and that of Ottomans and Sumerians
so high, we have some significant flip risks: Bursa, Landeck, Bruck, Kufstein.
- Speaking of settlers, we could probably stand to fill in a gap or two, but letting
the good cities build needed infra instead of settlers is not a bad idea. The one
weakest link actually is that just South of Vienna we've never even scouted - there
is at least one Arab city that is square in our first ring core. At some point
that should be 'fixed'.
- For a while I had about half the empire empty. Each city now has a personal
defender, and we can use some more cheap MP units (and flip guards?!)
- MM Salzburg for shields and check happiness next turn.
- Folks have been and are wandering through our lands frequently, don't be alarmed. :P
- We have the leader in Vienna, with a few good choices. Build a Knight army (ie hold until Chivalry), Rush the FP (I would probably go for a nearby one, like Salzburg, hand-made instead). An MDI army would be a backup plan if everything went down the toilet in the next few turns, but that's a weak choice too. The game absolutely must have a Hussar army for style ;) but with the amount of fighting I expect later, that should be no problem, especially if the Epic is completed from an earlier knight win.
(Even a one/two-Knight army with one/two Hussar spot(s) saved would work

Great job, Charis! I vote for a 2 Knight army, and then add on one and eventually 2 Hussars.

oh, and a word of warning about 1.13: I have discovered a bad bug (done lux deals just disapear) - no idea what is affected, only PBEMs or SP games, too - maybe you wait a day or two before you decide!!!!!

I wanted to upload pictures now. but I see that it doesn't makes much sense. However, here's a pic of our western regions. I hope they are placed ok? (and that it is the right picture, i only named them austria1, and austria2 :))

IHT: I switch a couple of laborers in Vienna to food/gold tiles. We still get the horses in 2.
Same kind of tale for Lienz.

Salzburg will expand in one turn :)

390 BC (1) Graz: pike->spear :)

IT: The Otto's start TGLib in Iznik. They are the first !?! It's almost obsolete :p

370 BC (2) Vienna: horse->spear.

IT: Germany starts TGL in Berlin.

350 BC (3) The Hittites have Literature and they lack three MA techs. But I do not trade atm...

IT: Germany starts Sistine.

330 BC (4) Vienna: spear->spear. Innsbruck: pike->spear. Krems: pike->spear. Germany, Ottomans and Sumeria know Theology.

310 BC (5) Graz: spear->temple. Landeck: spear->spear. Klagnefurt: warrior->barracks. Weiz: worker->barracks.

290 BC (6) Vienna: spear->spear. Lienz: spear->market. Kufstein: temple->spear.

270 BC (7) Innsbruck, Krems: spear->market. Gmuend: worker->temple.

250 BC (8) Vienna: spear->spear.

230 BC (9) Landeck: spear->market. Bischofshofen: temple->harbor. Villach: worker->barracks.

210 BC (10) Vienna: spear->spear. Kufstein: spear->courthouse.

I looked south a bit and found that Basra, the Arab city, is built in the jungle. The AI managed to discover Literature and Theology in these ten turns AFAIK. I made no tech trades, but we could get Literature from the Hitties for Engineering.
Our income just went up to 73 gpt. I built a lot of spear, becasue the horses were not available and I don't like to build warriors. I considered the fact that we would like to have knights instead of MDI's.

Time for bed

I have also noticed that with Conquests, the AI has put Literature at an all-time low priority as compared to PTW. An edge for the human considering the power of the Great Library? (has this already been discussed endlessly elsewhere?)

See if we need any land gaps filled in with settlers. Each extra city we have will be helpful when come into our Fascist glory!
Getting one South of Vienna just so we can SEE what's going
on down there would be nice.

And we should still have that army waiting for Chivalry, when it can take one or two knights and snatch a win vs a hurt foe so we can build the Epic and Mil Acad later.

Lit and Theology, ew! That top line is the path for losers says Franz!
