RBC9 - Hittite Charioteers

OK, I'm having difficulties patching to 1.15. The CivFan upload link is not loading and I do not have the hour to wait online for Atari's site to download.

@Hotrod If you can grab it go ahead. I'll try to patch again later tonight.

6gntxn

[EDIT] Looks like I was trying to patchwhile they were updating for the new all inclusive 1.15. Playing now.

I was away last night and up in RBC4B so I may not be able to play tonight. If I get RBC4B done then I can go ahead. Will keep you posted.

In is once again time for Mursilis Texan to lead the Hittites.

First thing he notices is the healthy bank account at 702g and 145GPT. "Why is this?" he asks. "It is because we could not last 20 truns of war with the Mongols. We have no credit with anyone." replied the Treasury Secretary.

"That's to bad, too." interjected the Foreign Minister. " There are four techs out there that we do not have and acouple ot trades posible if we had good credit." "What you must do then is go do that voodoo that you do so well and get the Aztecs and the Mongols locked in an internal war to last until the end of time!" commanded Mursilis Texan. "But they are at war now, sir." "Good."

"Where is the Domestic Advisor. I have changes to make."

Agada does need protection but pulling 2s, the pike will take 12 more turns. It goes to courthouse.
Hattusha: slow growth to get market faster.
Tyrana: Grow faster and switch to a market...We need income.
Alewppo needs a taxman so give them a market. Another MP is cheaper than the Coloseum.
Slow Ankuwa's growth to speed the temple.
Hattusas can make 15spt. Make Pikemen. We are a Monarchy. Dropping 10% in lux tax will save 13GPT. We can do that with less than 13 MP.
Tarsus starts a market.
Lagash switches to market.
Kish will now grow next turn.

I do not like what the workers are doing. We have two native luxuries that are not connected. We have Iron we can trade to Abu or Wang if it was connected.

IBT Joan asks us to remove our troops and I comply. Wang asks us to leave. Cancel Joan's horses for Dyes and Ur riots.

510AD Shift MP's and workers.

520AD More of the same.

IBT Kish and Uma riot before their MP's arrive.

530AD Ankuwa temple-->market

IBT now that I have my workers one square from connecting our resources, the Mongols move onto the square.

540AD Kish warrior-->courthouse Hattusha market-->courthouse

550AD We can afford Banking now buut nothing to get for it. Music Teory is half the cost of Banking.

Mongols and Aztecs stop fighting. Mongols start Newton's.

560AD Naturally they swapped the techs the other did not have. We can afford MT now but I am holding out for Physics.

IBT The Aztecs start Magellan's.

570AD Emar temple-->aqueduct Alalah market-->couthouse A safe steal is cheaper than buying Physics outright by about 150g and a WM. Go for it and I am lucky and we steal from the Aztecs.
The Mongols are not Industrial. Abu must be researching Physics because Physics@3 is not enough for Banking or MT @4. I switch our scientist over to Printing Press. I should have done this 7 turns back.

IBT Temujin is demanding our TM and 25g. No Problem.

580AD Erdenet walls-->harbor Hubishna musket-->market

IBT Here come tha Cavalry....Mongols decoare and attack Ugarit. Pike wins with help from Treb.

590AD Tarsus market-->pike starving to pull in 15spt. Ugarit market-->pike Four cav will take our 2 3-man in Agade. I have to let them to slow them down a little. Upgrade a spear to pike in Ivriz. Mixed army from Tyrana defeats one cav but he was off the road and cannot make it back to town. Trade Chemistry to Joan for Navigation, Music Theory and WM. Physics and Navigation go to Abu for Military Tradition, WM and 2g.

IBT Agade falls fast losing 12g. Irvits falls for another 13g. The People ask for the Military Acadamy.

600AD Aleppo riots because I pulled out 2 pike MP's who died on the road.

I have not moved anyone this turn. With our armies looking NW, Genghis atacked our NE. Our defenses in old Sumeria are less than paper cutouts. The French now know the Mongols so we can give them all we have for an alliance. We can protect our west and let the French help out in the East. Lagash and Sumer are the only 2 that are not completely corrupt. We need France to protect Ur and Kish, Pyramids and Sun Tzu's.

I almost had a quiet turn.....

They demanded tribute and we gave it to them and they STILL attacked, same turn??????

That's really NASTY! "Almost had a quiet turn" is right...
('No problem' did mean that you gave in, right?)

"We need France to protect Ur and Kish, Pyramids and Sun Tzu's"

Now if that isn't a sign of trouble, I don't know what is!

> Aleppo riots because I pulled out 2 pike MP's who died on the road.

Completely understandable action, but... in this variant that's completely disallowed -- tis fitting they've died. Easy to forget when the Mongols come to slit your throat, but upcoming leaders must remember this.

We got Mil Trad? Well that's good! Alas, we never did get our saltpeter back did we? Seems like a priority (Well, after 'survival' that is) With Mongols pulling the worst and most vile form of treachery, we need some alliance(s). As 6GT mentioned, France is critical, if they allied with the Mongols it would be game over. That probably won't leave us any money to buy other friends, but perhaps someone else is at war with Mongols?

Hotrod, you've got your work cut out for you! Our chances look abysmal, but as you guys know from other SG's, never give up!! Pulling this dark puppy out of the hole would make this an epic adventure :hammer:

Good luck!
Charis

@Charis: IIRC the French don't know of the Mongols, so an alliance against us is out of the question. They might still sneak attack us though, especially with our pitiful army and empty cities on their border.

Double-post.

Trying to follow all the RBC games I got confused and started moving MP's. I guess Temujin remembered the rules and decided to punish me. There is another pike outside Ugarit that needs to go back to Hattusas.
We are up 2 techs not including MT we cang give to France as part of the alliance. Same with Wang. The Ottomans are down to OCC thanks to the Arabs. Abu and the Aztecs would not lose any sleep if the Mongols ran over us.
I was playing with the folowing goals. If we could not buy techs on credit, we needed as much GPT to build our account for purchases/steals. That was the focus on markets and courthouses. With 5-10 more turns of peace, we could have been in a good position to take the eastern salt from the Mongols, but they have taken the two towns on that road. :p

[EDIT] Cross post with Yom.....France has met the Mongols, or more likely the other way around with Navigation.

If that's the case, then we need to get an alliance w/ the French ASAP. If the Mongols ally with them first, this game may be over as the French are in a perfect position to take all of former Sumeria with SUN TZU's and the PYRAMIDS. If Kish and Ur fall, we're screwed since I sold off all previously existing Barracks and Granaries. Plus, If we get an ROP, the French could do some damage and even sign in more allies.

I've been experiencing a few technical difficulties and have a few turns completed.

Should get the game back tomorrow evening.

We are still kicking but are broke and bleeding so far.

BTW on turn 2 Mongols have rifles.

600 AD (0): Am I looking for Monsters or are we in really big trouble. A few cities with nothing but warriors and others that are empty. Lions, Tigers and Bears Oh my??!! Now the question is do I just hunker down or make a play for a city. What is the best bet to get the Mongols to the peace table and what will it cost. We can do nothing on the tech side and will be amassing gold. In the short term I will be spending just to stay alive. Rush a Pike at Ugarit. Swap Aleppo to a knight from a market wasting shield but really want to hold the city. Waste even more at Lagash but fear that single pike just won't hold up against Mongol cavs, swap to a Knight. Harran I fear is a goner but swap to a pike anyway. Hurry a knight at Umma and upgrade the lone 3-man there. Put the moved pike back into Aleppo. Change empty Ur to a Pike. Rush a pike at Sumer via a worker. Change Tyrana to a knight wasting 4 more shields. Change Ankuwa to a knight and rush it. Upgrade another 3-man. we are now broke but hope to survive a few more turns. Kill a couple mongol cavs in our territory but can't get them all. Move a small force to hit Uliastay next turn. Press space and

INBT: Harran falls, cav vs. reg warrior 0/3. Lagash pike holds but the Ur 3-man falls along with the Pyramids.

610 AD (1): Tarsus a pike starts a knight. Sumera a pike starts another. Ugarit a pike starts a knight. Lagash a knights starts a pike. Umma a knight starts a pike. Tyrana a knight starts a pike. Aleppo a knight starts a pike. Ankuwa a knight starts a pike. Attack and easily capture Uliastay. :uhoh: Spot a mongol rifleman in Ulaangom. Recapture Ur and the Pyramids. Blitz and capture Ivriz with our Knight Army. Blitz and capture Kadesh with an army and a single knight. He still won't talk. Try but fail to capture Harran.

INBT: Mongols and Koreans sign an embargo against us. Ivriz doesn't hold :(. Umma and HG falls. Lagash falls with theh Mausoleum. Ugarit was one of our more fortified cities it had 2 pikes, falls.

620 AD (2): Metallurgy to France for Banking. Banking to Korea for Printing Press WM and 40 gold. Ur will most likely fall next turn. Rush a pike to try and save Sumer. Same goes for Tyrana.

INBT: Ur and the pyramids fall, Allepo falls. Arabs kill off Osman.

630 AD (3): This is not good :(. Build a few more despiration pikes start more. Mongols still won't talk and we are spent. I am afraid to try and take back Allepo because I can't hold it. Manage to kill 1 crusader.

INBT: The yellow wave continues. Sumer falls.

640 AD (4): :aak: that about sums it up. I can't doo much except hope. Kill 1 approaching cav but lose 1 knight I can't afford to lose.

INBT: kish and along with it SunZu fall.

650 aD (5): Won't be able to hold Kadish to the approaching stack of 20 or so units so I move the knight to try and hold Ankuwa. I don't hold out much hope. Rush a pike but wasted as it will only be a reg now. Something to be said for holding onto your barracks and granaries. Did I mention Mongols have rifles.

INBT: Kadesh falls.

660 AD (6): Ankuwa will fall next turn there is a stack of 20 sitting on the door step. Move all knights out to Hattusas. Attack the Longbows in the area with an elite and get a great leader. we need a FP so I send him to the capital for now. Mongols still will not talk. This is not good. Our refreshed army kills 3 cavs but still not talk of peace.

INBT: 3 pikes are killed and Tyrana falls. Ankuwa falls to the SOD.

670 AD (7): Final peace talks the question is now how much will it cost me and do I try to take a city back first. I take Tryana with the army and go back to the table. BTW we just lost or iron source too top things off. Well he wants gold but I offer a no good city in the tundra of Alaca Huyuk and he seems okay with that. So peace it is. And we have a long row to hoe from here. Lux to 30% we have no iron, no lux and lost all our granaries and baracks but at least we are still alive.

680 AD (8): Hattusha starts on a barracks. Hubishna a temple. Working to get the iron reconnected and hook up our silks from the west.

690 AD (9): Not much.

700 AD (10): Some of our last knights complete and start on baracks. We can have iron hooked up in a few turns. Started to connect the road to the silks first because Iron was blocked by Mongol units that were on there way out. Our territory is much smaller and only defend, barely, by pikes. We have no way to get salt and our best unit we can build is a knight. Not a good situation.

Not sure where my biggest mistake was but I am sure I made plenty. Just happy to get out of this with still a game to play. Albeit a deep deep hole. Did I mention the Mongols have rifles?

The tech hole is about as bad we are down almost everything with now means to get ahead. Joanie and Wang are useless and Abu is not much better. Genghis and Monty are walking away with this.

here is the save:

Wow! We seem pretty Screwed, we lost the Pyramids and Ankuwa? Things do not look good at all, winning this game or even surviving is gonna be difficult.

Saw Yom post and thought that was a got it. So heres a bump to remind him.

I certainly understand your desire to ignore the fact that your up considering the mess we have at this point.

I was happy enough not to get completely destroyed. Had the Mongols been a human I am sure we would be no more.

Pikes just don't hold up well against cavs and my attempt to get him to the peace table failed missureably. Should've curled into a shell and road out the storm I guess :(

Good luck Yom!

Sorry about the pictures Zed I haven't had a chance to reload the game and get them up.

Oops, didn't realize I was up. I see it, but won't be able to play it until tomorrow night, so if you want to skip me, feel free. This week has been kind of hectic with exams and the snowstorm.

I have to apply the same rules here as in RBC7, over 72 hrs and haven't started yet is an automatic skip. Two comments here --

1) At the end of your turn post *PLEASE* put who is UP and who is on deck. That avoids "I didn't know I was up"
2) Pay more attention to who you follow and don't get confused if someone doesn't post a roster reminder after every turn. If you're busy - no problem, just ask for a skip that turn.

"Got it" (and trust me, the skip isn't so I get to play now, I was rather looking forward to avoiding the mess too! :p )

The Medival era was not 'ours'. We pushed hard against the Sumerians, and had
the Mongols passively let us consolidate we would have been in great shape.
Instead, they were merciless, and have stolen our Pyramids and Sun Tzu.
Able to build only Knights, at best, initially it looks like a quiet hold-the-fort
round of player turns coming up just to survive to Nationalism. Thank goodness
we have an army anyway...

We did manage to keep 9 cities, which should be decent from a production
and income point of view, and can sustain a second army. Seeing all those
barracks under 'reconstruction' is painful
We're 4th in score and power, and the Mongols are just an 'elephant'. If they
keep up the attack on us or other civs, it could go from frying pan into fire.
For now actually, the world is at peace. Wow, we even have an MGL handy?
Hotrod suggested a FP. That isn't a bad idea, but given our core, we would have
to do that very nearby anyway - can we just build one? (We'll want to build Mil Acad
and Heroic Epic too, at some point, but lots else to do) *IF* the Mongols don't
up and pull away, this is NOT the worst situation I've seen in an SG.

[0] 700 AD - France will give us dyes for our map, which sounds good. Past navigation
and with harbors that should be safe.

[1] 710 - Time to renegotiate peace with Arabs. 2-fer possible as Arabs have Magnetism
but lack ToG. We get latter from Aztecs for a hefty 95gpt (at peace table, alas), and
then trade to Arabs for Magnetism but we have to throw in horses, 10gpt and 60g. We're
Industrial. Mongols have only Nationalism, and no one else has that. Aztecs and Arabs
have no Industrial techs. Koreans lack Physics, which we sell for what they can afford,
3gpt+36g. France lacks our two newest techs, and we let it stay that way for now.
We start a scientist on the pricey Nationalism tech.

[3] 730 - Hattusas, Hattusha, Tarsus, all start banks, as we can definitely use more
cash. Poor Tyrana re-starts a new temple. Allepo expands - and here I was secretly
hoping it would flip to us!

[4] 740 - Ulaangom flips to us! Iron is hooked up too, we start a few Knights.

[6] 760 - Shoot, only now do I notice *9* workers sleeping in Tarsus. 8-\
(My bad but do try to point out large sleeping stacks if they're not visible)
Looking over FP site locations, Hattusha looks as good as any. I swap from bank
there to FP, due in 15, although next leader could reverse that. I also go and
convert our leader to an army, just "in case" we were to lose 2-3 cities immediately
in a sneak attack war - this would render us unable to support/create a second army.
However I'm *not* filling it, but leaving it until we have cavalry, specifically.
(Hmm, btw, France is now industrial, no new techs there)
IBT - Arabs and Aztecs go MPP.

[7] 770 - A few spear->pike upgrades.

[9] 790 - Shall we help Korean enter the industrial age? When he does he'll get
a free tech and jump ahead. Still, that shouldn't hurt, and he can pay about 12gpt.
Hmm, or perhaps we can get Democracy for it? He'll need to be brought to the peace
table... ok. It costs 142g+10gpt, a stretch but we may well need to go Democratic
later (after more markets and banks in place). He drew Medicine. Mongols have come
up with Steam Power, btw, and Aztecs have Nationalism.
IBT - Aztecs complete Magellan's.

[10] 800AD - Fancy that, Mongols have Medicine and Koreans have Nationalism.

Our econ isn't super, at 77g-10gpt, but a few banks will come in during the first
half of the next reign, to right that, and an expensive deal expires in 11.

Our meager lands:

RBC9-Hittites800AD.jpg

Looking at the map, there's hope Ankuwa might flip?? Although it's Kadesh with
the ivory, Adana with the saltpeter, that we would prefer.

Elvis, stay the course! Keep us out of trouble, building banks, rax, FP, give
in to tribute demands and let's stay at peace!? At some point, we'll want to
start Mil Acad in our capital and Epic somewhere else, but not sure if that will
happen on your watch. Keep a scientist going on Nationalism, as it will be too
pricey to buy. Our next leader may get to buy Steam Power on peace-talk-credit
terms when our deal with Aztecs expires. An embargo between Korea and Mongols against
us should end soon, when we can sell them our extra horses. Note - there are some
Mongols sleeping fortified in our land, so NOT give them the boot unless you want
to see us get wiped out. :P

Good luck,
Charis
