RBE DSG2 - It's a Small World After All

Hey guys,
I've been lurking around succession games for a long time (unfortunately I don't have enough time to play them), but this was absolutely the best I've seen and the one I've learnt the most from.
Congratulations you all and keep up the good games and stories for us!
:goodjob:

We's outta heah! Here's my take on things...

The rest of the world looks on in wonder as on a certain pre-arranged day in 1922, the entire Aztec population boards the newly completed space ship "Azteca I" on a journey to a brave new world, full of peace and promise... and then in horror as American ICBMs detonate thoughtout the Aztec countryside the very next day! Fortunately the radiation shielding on the ship protects the people on board from harm. The ship lifts off, leaving the Aztec cities eerily vacant, its fields untended. Pandemonium ensues as the treacherous Americans, Egyptians, and Iroquois struggle to claim the abandoned territory and resources the Aztec nation left behind. The final global war begins and quickly escalates into a nuclear confrontation, in which the partially completed spaceships of the other nations are soon destroyed, preventing them from following the Aztecs into space.

Twenty years later, as the Aztec people are arriving at Alpha Centauri, the major cities of the world are in ruins, the human population of the planet has dropped by 75%, and those that remain struggle not only against their neighbors but also simply to grow enough food to survive. Technological progress has begun to reverse due to the scarcity of printed materiel and due to the worlds youth being raised to either be farmers or soldiers. To make matters worse, nuclear winter has begun to set in...

Abe, Hi, and Cleo: You want to control the world? You're welcome to it. :nuke: Cya later... or maybe not!

EDIT: Hmm, when entering this into the HOF, America didn't nuke me. Spy says he had no ICBMs left, though he did have some tac nukes. Anyway, the story still works!

What a game!

I must say I was very very disappointed in the AI. With the accolades this game is getting, I think it would be awesome if someone in the know pointed Firaxians to this thread to see what real problem the AI has executing wars and going for space victory.

Being a basketball fan, this game reminded me of the choke job of Chris Webber and the Kings in Game 7 of last year's conf. finals. They had the lakers beat but they just gave it away missing free throws and passing up the shot to win. The AI choked big time here.

However, the AI wouldn't have lost without stellar play from everyone on this team. I do believe it was a team effort. We all have different styles and experiences but we were able to coordiante an amazing comeback victory from an almost unwinnable position. We pulled out the the Kobayashi Maru of Civ III.

So, who's got PTW and ready to do a PTW DSG?

:D

Hmm - I tried it, reproduced the same sequence, ended up with America at war with us (but no message of him declaring - looked like us auto-declaring), and him not nuking us. Tried several permutations of exactly what I clicked on for the renegotiation; still couldn't reproduce it. Doesn't really matter, but I wanted to see it. :)

edit: Couldn't even get him to nuke us by nuking HIM before ending the 1922 turn. Ah well. At least Sirian saw it. :)

The ranking screen calls us "Monty the Conqueror." Hah! Right above Monty the Clever, which would have been far more fitting :D

* Observe as America then immediately betrays us, declares war, and NUKES US WITH ALL THE ICBM'S THEY HAVE LEFT! (Thank you, Hiawatha!)

Note the "thanks Hiawatha" parenthetical? Hi ate all of America's intercontinentals a few turns earlier. Thus, Abe had none left to shoot off. You can bet he would have if he'd had them, though, and could potentially have messed us up (a whole turn, maybe more) during which we MIGHT have lost.

Sorry to confuse you all with obscurities. :o :crazyeye:

We be 50.000000031337! :hammer:
Them are 49.999999105345!

Oh. :) I got the hint that Abe had used most of his ICBMs, but thought he had had some left (considering he nuked EVERY Iroquois city...) Plus there were five turns between his apocalypse and our launch, during which he coulda built more. :)

Prophetic words by Zed: I expect at some point this planet is going to blow, though, given the relations everyone has with everyone else. Hopefully we can get off the planet before it happens.

And for our next trick, who wants to go Beyond Deity. AI Cost Factor=50% ....

Congrats for everyone. This game now ranks second in my 'best ever played civ3 games I've seen'.
You got a well deserved victory which you would have got even if the AIs would have focused on the Space Victory.
Seeing all the nuclear bombing I think you were lucky you never got hit.
I think the AI was fairly good except the reseraching the wrong tech in the end. But the total nuclear war was nice to see.

PS: Now when is RBE4 going to start? THe guys from RBE3 finished a week or two ago but never started a new one. I even thought opening a thread but since I won't be playing I decided I shouldn't.

Monty the Conqueror. I like :). We conquered the most unwinnable position on deity that I've ever seen (excluding variant games... actually, probably including variant games).

EDIT: And just for fun, I decided to play a couple of turns and nuke the crap outa abe. We easily took his capital with the three nukes strategically placed how I said to place them :).

Oh, and this was the first game where there has been such an armageddon. Spaceship would have been the only fitting victory condition in this game, and I'm glad it worked out like that.

GG guys, it's been a pleasure working with you :).

[party] Congratulations [party]

What an amazing Game. :goodjob:

Surviving several Deity-AI attacks to pull out a Space-win.

This is a legendary Game and a 'must read' for all civies.

Congrats again

Well, after reading this thread every single morning for the last 2 months, I must say this is the most amazing game I've ever seen. I usually quit any game that seems half as bad as this one. You've topped my previous "most amazing SG" (the "cuban isolasionists" on a frozen island). Wow. A truly great feat of tenacity. I can simply bow down to the masters... and try to win my first deity game (without reloading).

I'll start the question of what to do with RBD4/5 in the RBE DSGs thread -- that way everyone interested can see the requirements to sign up and can express their interest without cluttering up a new game thread.

Wow.
You have my greatest congratulations.
I bow to you.
This is hard to believe.
I bet you could pull out WBD- Way Beyond Deity if you wanted to. AI Cost Factor=40, 0 content people.

Yndy: what was the best game you've ever seen?

Erik -- that would be really pushing it. Zero content people, meaning we need lux tax on turn one or we go into disorder... AIs build stuff/research/grow 2.5 TIMES as fast as we do?!? Even on Deity they only build stuff 1.67 times as fast as us.

That would be about on the level of a Deity OCC. Possible, but you'd have to not only play almost perfectly but also be very lucky indeed to be able to win under those conditions.

Well, that was sort of the point.
You see, I have been with parts of the RBD community since I lurker on the Lounge in... er, when... sometime before D2 came out, and when the DSF was useful. I watched as Civ3 came out, read all your exploits (not, not those kinds of exploits) and finally bought Civ3 myself.
I have an immense respect for the experienced LL/RBD/RBCiv crew. I am sure you could to Realms Beyond Deity- AI 50% cost, and this is why i suggested WBD. Oh, and let the AI start with three settlers and four workers.

Actually, if you pushed it down to zero content people the AI would be helpless until they hooked up a lux. Since they would be forced to run a specialist from turn 1 (since they don't touch the lux slider).

Actually, the AI by default always gets 2 content citizens to begin with. This is one of the rules set by "Artificial Intelligence Default Difficulty Level" under General Settings in the rules editor. Unless you change it, it's set to Regent, meaning the AI uses certain Regent rules for itself like number of content citizens, their bonus against barbarians

I second T-hawk.

That is why when you get a city from the AI during peace negotiations, often the city gets smaller in the first turns as people are changed from content to unhappy. (as if people were more happy under the AI rule). That is also why playing below Regent is so easy.

I know I am a bit late in the congratulations but I just read the entire thread from start to finish and I wanted to say Thank You! I have learned a great deal from your efforts.

What an amazing game.

Reminds me of a quote I once read:

"Life's battles won't always go to the strong or fast at hand, but sooner or later, the man who wins is the man who thinks he can."

Your victory demonstrates what is possible if you believe you can win and never quit.
