Really, how bad is it in Serbia?

Im from Serbia.
People here don't really give a damn nor hate the actual citizens of the countries that have accepted Kosovo independence, especially not the Canadians.

Dont be fooled by some hooligans that would do anything and burn anything in the name of "justice", they are just a pathetic bunch of imbeciles that after attacking the US embassy went on looting the Nike stores nearby.....

Just go on youtube and watch "Kosovo za patike" video and you'll notice just how patriotic those idiots are.

It's perfectly safe to go to Serbia.

andvruss, why do you have a Russian flag as an avatar? If you're Russian, I would not worry too much about "trouble" in Serbia.

I am only part Russian (I am Canadian), but I am going into Russian and European studies here at Carleton University and am starting to learn Russian and go an exchange to St. Petersburg (hopefully) in my third year, hence my avatar :D.

I will definately bring up my complaints to the board who have decided to cancel the Serbia portion of the trip, but if they are THAT concerned over liability issues, then I dont see much help I can do. I mean, I bet you are more likely to get hit by a car or some other way injured in London or New York than be in serious danger by mobs in Serbia..

 Nice...

Avoid saying anything about your nationality. If all else fails, speak French. Canada is one of the nations that has recognized Kosovo. I don't believe the angry mobs will harm actual citizens, only symbols of the government, but I've never been there.

Actually, we haven't recognized Kosovo. That would open such a big can of worms for us... there'd be worms EVERYWHERE.

Andvruss just tell em that everyone likes Canadians :)

Seriously i dont think i have ever heard someone saying something bad about Canada or Canadians in my entire life. And im not talking just about Serbs but in general.

P.S. Except maybe Americans who think that you are somewhat lesser than them.

You tell them that!
I think what most of the people say here should work out for you. Go, don't talk politics, be nice to people (Serbs are Slavs :) ) and you'd be okay
If you need any help with Russian, do tell me :goodjob:

You have nothing to worry about. Don't get freaked out by news of a small number of people going on a rampage, while the rest of the country didn't and are in fact hanging their heads in shame and dismay at the minority of idiots.

I'm going to Belgrade in about a month's time and am planning my wedding there in August. We're changing none of our plans. In fact, when I get married, I'll be wearing my "Serbia is Kosovo!" T-Shirt. :mischief:

It's always a good idea to be careful when talking politics and religion in strange lands; you don't want to aggravate your hosts.

As for the current situation in Serbia, it doesn't seem that bad (better than going to say, much of the Middle East & Africa). The Canadian government doesn't have an official travel warning, just general advice to "exerise a high degree of caution".

Personally, I were going there, I wait a week or two to go -- just to allow things to settle down.

I don't recommend Americans a visit to Serbia right now. Some embassies are still not open, and they have better protection than individual tourists.
It's not just the danger of gone-mad crowds, nowadays, just about everybody in Serbia hates the Amis.
If you really want to visit, wait for a year and two. Or even better, pretend you are from Russia.

I don't think its a good idea either, you'll get bashed in the Balkans! (geddit? Geddit? *room is silent*).

You`d better stop by in Zagreb for that pint, ya hear? Congratulations, BTW :)
