I'd rather be a rebel.

Oh I get it. A "rebellion" is an unsuccessful revolution, and a "revolution" is a successful rebellion. So, I pick "revolutionist." (though technically it's "revolutionary.")

Rebel only if the society has changed to a significant degree.
Revolutionary only if the society needs to be changed.

This question entirely depends on how you define 'rebel' and 'revolution'. But, I prefer Camus' crappy old definitions.

Rebel - Someone who pinpoints one single problem and complains/fights against it, and undermines some kind of sovereignty in the process.

Revolutionist - Someone part of a movement that demands total, encompassing change

I'd rather be happy and not pick either one.

Everyone is saying that a rebellion is an unsuccsessful revoultion, but in my mind when you pit them agansit each other, the revoultionary is the one trying to cause a change and the rebel is the one trying to prevent the change. One example is to say that the Loyalists were rebels and the Patriots were revoultionists.

Also, keep in mind that at the end of WW2 France was not controlled by the Nazis, so the French rebellion, did in a sense, succeed, even if other countries did most of the fighting.

A revolutionist is proactive : he's trying to achieve a definite end and reform society in a higher order, or what he considers a higher order anyway. A rebel may not have a plan or even a real belief is his cause. The choice is obvious.

Rebellious, especialy against people or organizations that tick me off.

Rebel because who doesn't wanna be rebel! :D

What are you revolving around?

the sun. but that is irrelevent.

I would be a revolutionary, as they stand for their beliefs and spread them. Rebels kill people who disagree, while we convert them. a lot less messy.

as for the distinction,

You say you want a revolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world
You tell me that it's evolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world
But when you talk about destruction
Don't you know that you can count me out
Don't you know it's gonna be all right
all right, all right

bolded makes you a rebel. anything else is revolutionary.

I find it sort of misleading to define the two terms by notated individuals as opposed to the ideals/philosophy behind each

A revolution (from Late Latin revolutio which means "a turn around") is a significant change that usually occurs in a relatively short period of time

A rebellion is, in the most general sense, a refusal to accept authority. It may therefore be seen as encompassing a range of behaviours from civil disobedience to a violent organized attempt to destroy established authority. It is often used in reference to armed resistance against an established government, but can also refer to mass nonviolent resistance movements. Those who participate in rebellions are known as "rebels".

I think that my username will give a sufficient answer as to where I would be.

To me, a rebel is a revolutionist that lost, and a revolutionist is a rebel that won
