The Roman Empire fought the good fight, but after years of fighting the largest war humanity has ever seen, its leaders were forced to the table by growing popular unrest in the far-flung territories of the Empire. The victorious Allied Powers, consisting of the British and Russian Empires, the Federal Republic of Coastal Nations, and the Republic of the Rio Grande, were forced to the table as well by a variety of factors, from inflation in the FRCN to roving bands of Mexican deserters plaguing North America.
The peace was hard for both sides, but ART+F won. The peace decided the fate of the Inner Dominion of China and her Taoist government, even though Qing and IDC delegates weren't present for the negotiations.
In the end, Rome was forced to limit the size of her military, cede the Balkans to the Allies, and refrain from moving troops outside her borders. This, on top of of the punitive reparations, would plague the Roman economy for the next decade.
Some would say that the outcome of the war didn't matter given the event that took place one decade later. However, if not for the widespread destruction caused by the ongoing Chinese Civil War (1832-1843), widespread violence in the Balkans following the collapse of Wallachia, and the Second Mexican-American War [1832-1834], maybe the powers that be would have been better prepared for the Fall.
On 23 March 1843, a comet burst in the atmosphere over North America and fragments rocked the continent and rained destruction in the Atlantic, where swells would in the coming weeks destroy the vestiges of Spanish rule in Ireland.
The Fall changed everything. Societies collapsed, crops failed, great bands of people migrated or starved, and often both. The next two decades were the darkest years humanity had suffered in recent memory.
Birthed during the Great Fire and Long Winter were a different kind of human.
But humanity, always strong, refused to submit and society expanded and reemerged from the last strongholds of civilization and reason.
The year is 1997. The powers that be have come a long way since the darker years. Armed with machine guns, moving boxes of steel called "barrels", aeroplanes, modern medicine, and the fruits of industrial society, empires and nations step out of the dark and into the light, to rebuild what the heavens had seen fit to destroy.
But not all is set in stone anymore. The post-Fall years are full of stories and myths of a mystical nature, but the accuracy of stories made up during a time of great stress is in doubt.
Welcome to Rebuild of Revolution.

What is this thread for? Fleshing out the history of the world between 1843 and 1997 of course! Many countries have shrunk, moved, and changed greatly since the Fall.
The map will be filled completely when the game starts. White spaces are for Settlements and Colonies.
Most returning players can pick up their old countries (which may have moved a lot since 1843). New players can forge Colonies.
Returning players, you can lay claim to parts of the map that are currently unclaimed. These territories will be called Settled Territory, territory with rather low-population density and not enough relevance to be called colonies.
Settled territory, when it reaches a certain (unknown to you) population, becomes Colonial Territory. Colonies are semi-independent entities that answer to a motherland and send tribute to it. Players who join as Colonies should pick which country they're a colony of, and that player has to accept it.
