Recreational marijuana legal in Colorado now!

Look man, it's just like that dude on Fox warned us would happen. Some kid got all potted up on weed and decided to start swinging around a samurai sword. I'm annoyed by these stoners.

I hate stupid cops. They could have tackled the guy and removed the sword, but no they have to kill him...

Unfair use of force...

Are you joking....?

Anywho - I'm guessing they can tax it - though I dont know. But if they can, the federal government should DO NOTHING.

This is their chance to actually STUDY the impact of legalization. What is the income generated vs the loss? How many more crashes are there? How much does crime go up? How much does it go down?

They have the chance to study it while at the same time wiping their hands clean if it ends up bad because the PEOPLE voted for it.

Of course I am sure they will not do this and whenever something gets bigger then friend to friend dealing they will put the hammer down.

Er, try swinging a Katana at someone while I have a handgun. See what happens.

Even a crappy mall Katana isn't a joke if someone swings it at you as hard as they can, and the closer to "real" it is the worse it would be. $874 bucks and I guarantee you it could kill someone quite easily.

Without getting into stupid freaking wapanese arguments about "authenticity" and quasi-magical beliefs about the swords, I will say that you're still talking about a very sharp piece of metal.

This made me smile and generally increased my happiness.

Can someone explain this like I am a five year old? What difference is this going to make?

I don't know exactly what you want but...
Each state in the US has a congress and these congresses can pass state laws that only apply to that state. There is the national congress which passes laws that apply to the whole country. There are also referendums which are where everyone votes for or against a law (it's on the same ballot that they use to vote for governor and president, etc). The referendums are only apply to whatever state they were in. So in this case, Colorado and Washington (two states in the US, in case you didn't know) both had referendums which asked citizens of those two states whether they think weed should be legal and a majority of people in both states said yes. So now the governors of both states have to sign and it becomes a law that people in those states can smoke the lime one. However, the national congress passed a law in 1970 which outlawed marijuana so technically the states aren't allowed to legalize it because the constitution says that federal laws are more important than state laws.

Indeed. And people breaking federal law are likely to be arrested and duly prosecuted.

Interesting situation, wouldn't you say? (And, ofcourse, until such a State law exists, it's still illegal anyway.) But I really like to see how a law can state something is both legal and illegal. The best solution would obviously be simply not to prosecute (State level), but that still leaves open Federal prosecution.

Also, ofcourse, soft drugs can only be legalized in international context.

I've heard arguments that treaties can actually supersede the US Constitution itself, but reading the supremacy clause for myself it appears that treaties are more on par with regular federal laws. It does seem like it may be harder to argue that treaties (once ratified by the Senate; the house of representatives has no say) are unconstitutional than laws are though. The Federal government is only granted the authority to pass laws for certain specific purposes, but such limits are not placed on treaties.

This is an absurd loophole that should be closed to the Federal government ASAP

Virtually no one ever faces federal arrest and prosecution for smoking marijuana. The federal government doesn't have nowhere near the manpower or resources to enforce that law themselves. So I'd say state legal marijuana smokers would be pretty safe.

However growers and stores could possibly face problems IF the federal government decides to act.

That's basically the problem: soft drug use has become so common that prosecution has bound to be limited to the trade. And some regulation thereof would certainly be welcome.

Can we get a bit more specific? Am I allowed 1 joint or 2? Can I have a whole bag of reefer or not? Does the kid selling me a 10 bag get locked up, or will it be available out of licensed shops etc?

I mean what effect will it have IRL.

We don't have to insult someone because they respect Japan....(considering all the mass produced reality/game shows out there anime is pretty deep stuff when its not high school drama/mixed with hentai...)

Now if they dress like Naruto that is a different story, but lets not slant a person for what they watch on Television...

And yes you can tackle someone without getting cut by the sword or use a teaser/stun gun.... especially if the kid is stoned(when your high you are really slow and clumsy...no Chuck Norris here)

And yes let us study how crime goes DOWN and how accidents happen less...When you are stoned and driving you normally seek out nice scenic routes/roads and not crowded highways/traffic...not because you can't focues, but because it "kills your high" to sit in traffic and stop and go...

Say what you want about the Otaku stoner who loves Japan, but they could have stuned him or teasered his dumbass...

I only joke about the apocalypse....:goodjob:

EDIT just to piss off all the neo conservatives..I started growing my winter/spring marijuana crop today....!

Unless your recreational use has you swinging a sword around, I don't think, practically speaking, much will change - except in 2 states you can now be recreational without fear of harassment.
