Red and white checkerboard graphics bug?

Played an unmodded game of Civ-5 G&K last weekend without any troubles, but am having lots of trouble this weekend when using mods. Have removed a few of the mods I thought might be causing problems, but am still having trouble using the remaining mods.

The technical problems are of two kinds: (1) random crashes to desktop both during the game and when trying to load a saved game, and (2) randomly seeing a bright red & white checkered background instead of the animated leader displays for the other civs.

Here's what I've tried so far: (1) In the game video options, turned off auto-scale interface and turned on small scale interface, (2) in Windows XP control panel, turned off display write combining, (3) in the civ-5 config.ini file, changed it to cap at 4 logical processors instead of 8 (for my quad CPU), (4) reduced some of the civ-5 video settings, and (5) rolled back to an earlier Nvidia graphics driver.

Does anyone have any other ideas, hints, suggestions I could try next (other than gerting rid of all mods)?

Hi,

Yeah, I know there isn't really a secret picnic scene with Dido, but I wanted to grab your attention and the title seemed appropriate considering the below screenshot.
Spoiler :

Dido_Picnic.jpg

Got this lovely picnic blanket texture when meeting Dido.

Also, as this thread shows, I'm not getting leader animations as I should either, but I don't know if it's related, so I kept both issues separate.

Have tried the Steam integrity verification process and also checked to see if my drivers are up to date; which they are afaik.

Your help is much appreciated, as everything was working fine before G&Ks and the recent .674 base game patch.

Thanks!

I Allso have this same bug. The Leader screen is all red and white. Allso see some red and white squares in town screen map.

Win XP
ATI x1800 XT
1600*1200 resolution

The problem does not come until later in the game. Restarting does not help, but starting a completely new game does.
There is allso game crashing bug that come later in the game. Ig you play huge map, it will come much earlier, so somekind of memory related problem? Huge maps eats too much memory?

Hi,

I'm also having trouble with G&K random crashes, and with seeing a red & white checkerboard background instead of the normal civ leaders screens.

My PC uses Windows XP, with an Nvidia GeForce 9500GT video card, and I've set my 19" CRT monitor display to 1024 x 768 pixels, with 32-bit color.

This configuration worked okay with Vanilla Civ-5, plus an unmodded G&K game last weekend, but keeps messing up this weekend when using the Unofficial Patch v13 mod, plus some additional mods adding more wonders & buildings.

Is my video card the problem now, and if so, which video features do you recommend that I change to lower settings?

Saw your thread ;), but didn't respond because I don't really have an idea and you already tried all the suggested things (will maybe merge the thread into this one here).
Your graphics card is at the border to the minimum specifications, depending on what exactly is in there.
You said you lowered the settings, so I guess you're already at the bottom...no idea what to suggest at that point :dunno: :(.

The_J,

Thanks for the quick reply.

I still had a few in-game video options set as medium, as they had worked okay earlier in G&K without any mods, but have just grabbed some dinner and will now try changing all the in-game video options to the lowest settings.

My video card is a bit old, so perhaps it might be a good idea to upgrade it. Am still using Windows XP, but will eventually upgrade to Win 7 in a year or two. Haven't looked into the videocard market for awhile, so am not up to speed. What Nvidia PCI-E video card would you recommend that I upgrade to?

P.S. Sorry for posting two separate messages here requesting help. I was just really frustrated and got a bit impatient.

Any card that is above a Geforce GT 430, will do the job. Most require a 300 PSU, so you may want to make sure yours is at least that.

I still say that it is heat related. The card is either over taxed and not allowed to cool properly, or it is just plain running hot.

Okay,

I used my credit card and upgraded from an Nvidia GeForce 9500GT video card today to a GeForce GTX 550 Ti.

Am doing some minor maintenance on my PC right now, but do plan to give G&K a try again this afternoon.

Hopefully, I will be able to report later that the card upgrade fixed my video problems, and hopefully fewer crashes will occur too!

My checker boarding has been held at bay for now and I am at about turn 330 on Epic, with a huge map. I have an i5 processor with a Ge Force GTX 460 (OK?). These are my other game settings:

Screen Resolution: 1280x760
Anti Aliasing off
Leader scenes: Medium
Overlay detail: Low
Shadow Quality: Low
Fog of War: Low
Terrain detail: Low
Terrain Tessellation: High
Terrain Shadow: Low
Water Quality: Low
Texture Quality: Low

Vsync: checked
HD Strategic view: not checked

There is a map update delay setting also (somewhere else) that I set to 4 rather than the default 2 seconds.

Are there any items I could change to improve things, but still keep the checker boarding at bay?

Have you checked to see if your system is running cool enough?

I get checker board only when I let my system get too hot. It goes away and stays away when the system is cool. That is my two cents worth. Your GT 460 is a DIrectX 11 card and very capable of doing max. settings. Your drawback is your processor and if you are running Vista or XP.

How do I check running temp? I am running windows 7 pro.

Switching to Small Scale interface mostly fixed this problem for me. I still get a red and white checkerboard or a game crash every once in a while - but it's much less frequent and the game is much more playable now. I would have commented sooner, but I started a new game and had to get into the modern era before I was sure.

-Update-

Problem solved with solutions mentioned.
-Set to small scale interface.

Here is my dxdiag if you need it. http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=d6D008GW
Any help would be much apreciated.

Please try to deactivate the mentioned interface options and to turn down the graphical settings (yes, seems unwarranted with your machine, I know), that might help.
