Red and white checkerboard graphics bug?

Hi.. I don't speak English very will but i think i found a temporary solution, ( Press the windows button which will take you back to desktop, and the get bat to the game and all the red and white checkerboard thing will disappear  ). it worked for me every time i do it, and the best part is it doesn't take long time.

I may have discovered a solution to the red & white checkerboard leaderhead background problem. It also appears to have greatly reduced the frequency of Civ-5 game crashes, too.

Background: Was able to play Civ-5 G&K without any crashes, using no mods, on my Windows XP machine with an Nvidia GeForce 9500GT videocard. However, playing G&K with even just one mod (any kind) would cause frequent crashing and cause the red & white checkerboard backgrounds to appear. Using more mods simply caused the problems to occur more often. (Did notice that just before each game crash, there would be a distinct CLICK sound from my computer.)

After unsuccessfully trying numerous suggestions from others on changing settings in Civ-5, settings in Windows, settings on my video card, and even upgrading to an Nvidia GTX550 Ti video card, I was about ready to throw in the towel.

Fortunately did one last Google search and found some helpful tips on the squidoo.com website. I did the following three things, and after about 400 more game turns played, have not experienced any more checkerboards. Also, the game crashes have dropped off enormously (even while using more than 20 mods) and the previous CLICK sound has gone away. Since I simultaneously did all three of the following fixes, am not sure which one did the trick, but at least one of them has surely helped.

1. Changed my Civ-5 game setting to run in windowed mode, instead of full screen.

2. Updated my VC++ libraries, by going into C:\Program Files\Steam\Steamapps\Common\sid meier's civilization v\VCRedist\ and then running vcredist_x86.exe

3. Updated my DirectX, by going into C:\Program Files\Steam\Steamapps\Common\sid meier's civilization v\DirectX and then running DXSetup.exe

Please try these possible fixes and report back if they work for you too.

Hi,

I've had some issues with missing textures in the past, but this is a new one.

I just started a new game up as Ethiopia and on my first turn I go to check my city and see this:
Spoiler :

This is completely new for me. I've never had these textures missing before. In fact, I was only playing a game as Austria a few days ago and all was well.

I've run tests and Civ5 doesn't get my CPU above 55ºC, which is well within it's maximum operating temperature of 71ºC. My GPU doesn't get hotter than 70ºC (Max is over 100ºC) and my hard drives are all within their operating temperatures at around 40ºC.

Civ5 is not overheating my machine.

I've run tests on my RAM and CPU to assess their integrity and stability and both pass their respective tests without errors. I've also run tests on my hard drives for bad sectors and other errors and again, no issues.

As far as I can tell, my PC is running perfectly, yet Civ5 is not. My PC meets or exceeds all the recommend specs for Civ5 as well.

I've gone as far as to reinstall Civ5 completely, from DVD and have run the Steam file integrity checker, again, with no issues.

I didn't have these issues just before G&Ks.

I just don't understand how my PC can play hours of Skyrim at the highest settings at 1920x1080, with no issues at all, yet Civ5 G&Ks presents me with all these issues and errors?

If the game won't run properly on 32-bit XP, then don't say on the box that it will. That's fine. I'd upgrade to Win7 for Civ. But according to every shred of evidence, Civ5 should run perfectly on my PC, yet despite the evidence I'm presented with problem after problem.

It blows my mind that I have to turn down graphics settings on Civ5 to medium, or even low, when at one point Civ5 would run at everything High without issues. My hardware exceeds the recommended. That's enough to turn every other game on the market up to max, yet Civ5 can't do that.

I could tollorerate having to turn the eye candy down, even on a machine that exceeds the requirements for that eye candy, but all these errors and bugs, after 18+ months of patches, is just hugely frustrating.

Somebody help me out here please  .

I updated both VCRedist and DXsetup. We'll see what happens.

It seems these graphic glitches doesn't have anything with overheating. It appears after some number of terrain tiles are explored, so I think one can get it sooner if he explores the map early. Switching to desktop indeed helps, but only temporary. Not a big matter to do it, but this glitch takes away any desire to continue playing after achieving any of victory conditions... Disabling combine writing thing make this glitches to appear a little later and makes it less intense.

P.S. I have an early Core Duo 1,86 Ghz and 2 Gb RAM, plus NVidia GTS 250 with 1 Gb VRAM. Those red and white checkers is only thing that spoils the game for me, it runs quite stable under XP SP3 with my hardware, though some crashes during loading a saved game sometimes happens.

Thanks, BirdJaguar. Trying your suggestions now. Where do you set to windows mode? Can't recall...

Pilotis_Black_Squares.jpg

Thanks anyway.

BTW my graphics glitch is the 'Black Squares' - attached.

Any further suggestions very welcome.

I only get the problem with Huge maps and very late on (This game is Huge, All cities revealed and Turn 594).

Intel i7 920 2.67GHz
6 GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce GTX560
Windows 7 Home Premium SP1
64bit

Anything else?

Hum. I did think of that. Makes no difference what graphics setting I use. I'm no programmer but I'm beginning to believe that the problem is 'coded' within Civ5. It's the CIV code that can't handle huge maps. Very disappointing...

Looks to me like the star wars edition.

You may want to check for overheating issues, would be my two cents.

I seem to have a strange issue since G&K installed.
After about 10-15 turns, almost every time, I get the display corrupting to a red & white checkerboard pattern at various places on the map.

Intel Q6700 so should have enough CPU, and I have a 1Gb ATI 5750HD Graphics card, so that ought to do it too. Running in Windows XP, so DX9 mode.

Come on! My GTX560 overheats ONLY when I play late game Civ5 - even with graphics set to medium or even LOW - not on ANYTHING else! Ever! Sorry. I just find that too hard to swallow.

Well, I have followed the instructions in post #11 & #84.
VCRedist only gave me the option to repair or uninstall, so C++ Runtimes presumably up to date.
Ran the DX update, and it seemed to do something.
Also turned off write combining - I remember this one from W98SE days! I'd forgotten about it though - and as for getting rid of the issue, we shall have to see.....I will post back later.

And it does not work.
Red/White checkerboard is still there.
Nothing is overheating (I checked).
Very, very nasty bug as it takes all the fun out of it.
The only thing that seems to work is saving, quitting & reloading.
I'll try Windowed mode, but think I am already running like this.

Another update.

I do not know if this will have fixed the problem, but there was - just arrived - a steam AMD Driver update. Installed & rebooting, will post back.
