Request for a Civ4: BtS "Intermediate" Succession Game

Yes, check out the SG forums for the sequel, which I am hoping to have when this finishes. Just PM me if you want to know what's happening with it. We'd be glad to hear from you as you watch the rest of the game. And if we haven't finished by the time you have your PC back, then maybe you can join back in!

So, farewell, I wish you all the best with your move, hope everything goes well. :)

Here's my quick try at the next 30 turns.

Spoiler :

I made some changes in the building queues, and redirected some units to have more military on the north/east side. I don't trust those one minute...;)

And here comes Julius already trying to force my hand, I told him what to do with it...
But I did make some nice trades with him.
Spoiler :
SG_Putchuco_200_13.jpg

Mausoleum built, nice!
I'm still thinking if it was right to have the Scientist Pigswill got build an Academy in Babylon (as I did) or use him to start a Golden Age...
Spoiler :
SG_Putchuco_200_12.jpg

I have been burned many times by the over-aggressive AI in BtS,
and I will go for Machinery here first, wanting the Macemen.
Spoiler :
SG_Putchuco_200_11.jpg

Next is Paper:
Spoiler :
SG_Putchuco_200_10.jpg

And guess what? George doesn't like me trading with Sury
and thinks it's time to topple the top civilization in the world...
Spoiler :
SG_Putchuco_200_08.jpg

I try to drag someone else into it, but nobody bites,
or to be more precise even considers it...

George unloads 2 Galleys with 3 Catapults and one Chariot on the Pigs at Babylon.
I upgrade the two units I have there to Longbowman and Maceman,
the massacre at the Babylonian Pig's Bay doesn't take long... :mischief:

A few turns later Sury shows mercy (with me...) and declares on George...:lol:
Spoiler :

SG_Putchuco_200_09.jpg

I get my units together and free the 'Iron Island' from American Imperialism... :p
Spoiler :
SG_Putchuco_200_06.jpg

And guess what? There's always another opportunist where the other one came from,
Toku declares war on me! :eek:
Spoiler :
SG_Putchuco_200_05.jpg

He lands 2 Catapults near Shusan and has to live without them from now on...

I get a 2nd Great Scientist and this time I start a Golden Age.
Still 9 turns of it left at turn 200.

World Overview after 200 turns

Spoiler :

SG_Putchuco_200_01.jpg

Here's something to think about for you guys:
- I leave a Galley east of the Iron Island City
- George makes a SUDDEN attack with a Trireme, sinks it and retreats
- I try to run after him, but cannot cross the Ocean there (red circle)
- HOW CAN HE???

Spoiler Concerning Putchuco's game :

Nice game, very different from mine - the Romans didn't try to force me a trade, neither did America declare war on me!! However, during my game I kept upgrading some units (maybe the increased power put him off), and I think that defense should be our priority in the next round - we've been flourishing with our economy but we don't want to be an easy target.

Sury declared war on George in my game even though there wasn't a war between him and me. I think that the city you captured (which was a great idea, when you had the chance) would have been better razed and settled 1W of it's current position, just to get the hill on our island for extra production. Anyway, nice try - I'll start doing the Stats for this round.

Spoiler My game and the resulting discussion from it :

Well, that's one of the things I'll never like about the Civ diplomacy.
Why would no 4 on the score ranking think it's a good idea to attack #1??
And especially when he's already disliked by #2, that's insane.

I'm still dreaming of an AI diplomacy that would make Washington for example
seek Toku's help, bond with him, pay me to stay out of it and attack Sury from both sides.
THAT would be a smart move.
Whereas here, both Washington and Toku will see their empires dwindle away in no time. I'm just waiting for Julius to enter the war against George also... lol

My version:
Spoiler :
Started off by turning our chinese possessions into a colony in 1100ad. Gave away five cities (including Beijing with Glight) to Darius our friendly subordinate.

Bit of a turn log coming up:
1100ad. Colony formed. Great Lib bidl.
1120 Complete MoM. Darius turns Hindu.
1130 Shushan founded (gems, rice, sugar, clams).
1140 Golden Age from GS.
1150Sury declares on George.
1160 Change civix to serfdom and OR. Adopt Hinduism.
1190 Eshnannu founded (new national epic city with 4 seafood).
1200 Dow George (Sury asked nicely. He's a fellow Hindu).
1220 Meet Wilhem.
1240 Chichen Izza bidl.
1260 GS born. Builds academy in Babylon. Islam fidl.
1290. Peace with George (faux war).
1340 Circumnavigation.
1360 Apolostolic Palace bidl.

Techs: Music, Compass, (Hbr, mono), machinery, optics, (paper), engineering, (drama), education, (theology). 6 turns for liberalism. Darius is 7 turns from guilds. Techs in brackets researched by Darius and got in trade.

I recalled units from China and upgraded them to maces.

I've been busy turning our cities Hindu.

One turn from next GP (30prophet, 70GS).

Getting on well with Sury and Jules. Not getting on well with George, Wilhem or Tok. Wilhem has AP; he and George are the Buddhists.

hm1a0000.jpg

Here's Eshnunna in 1400ad. Needs developing. Still has to build National Epic but its pinched four seafood from Beijing which will enable it to run a lot of specialists.

hm1b0000.jpg

Here's Shushan in 1400ad. Also needs a lot of developing but it should become a reasonable commerce city eventually.

Demographics aren't brilliant, but that's ok at this stage:

Holy ****, pigswill, it's surprising! Nice try this turn.

Anyway, my try gets along well with jamesds and putchuco's games.

PS. The post has no smilies due to 20 pictures limit... :sad:
Well, this was the only one!

My 30 turns :

Spoiler :

Going with pigswill game means going eco. We will try to do at least as good as he/she does.
Our goal for the next turnset ( no particular order ):
- scouting
- Liberalism
- spread religion
- try to get the Religious Golden Three ( Sistine, Sankore & Spiral )
- GA as soon as MoM is built
- eco buildup
The spread religion option becomes rather irrelevant once I get to know the save better – running no state religion gives us nice relations with almost anyone so we will keep it that way.
Before end of turn I go to see JC and make two eco-deals with him : pigs for cow and spices for 7GPT. It’s wise to stay friendly with the hindu bloc ( Surya & JC ).

171
(IT) Music ->Drama
Barracks@Borsippa -> Sistine Chapel
Barracks @Opis -> Forge
Great Library BIDL - luckily we weren't following this one. I'm surprised it stayed that long unbuilt.

172
Coffee time - no action.

173
(IT) Drama -> Paper
MoM@Akkad -> Forge ( GOTCHA once again )

Now there is no need to wait, because thanks to the nice pigswill's move we have a GSci already there:

It’s not finished. As we have a settler available, the gem-china city is found on the same turn:

Now it’s party time !

174
Garden@Sippar -> Forge
Cottage accident in Akkad ( My BAD BAD BAD KARMA ) – no screenshot here, I’m pis**d off.
Just to compensate this Karma, here is a nice sightseeing place our galley encountered. The local people call it Zoo-Wat :

Decide to boost the research while on GA.

175
(IT) Paper -> Education
Another explosion in Babylon. I had to pay 25G to save the mine… No, don’t speak, I know just what you’re thinking…
I get back to JC and trade him MC for Monotheism & Horseback Riding, just to get him pleased ( and spread religion )

176
China turn:
Forge@Beijing -> University of Sankoré
FP@Shanghai -> Forge ( thanks again pigswill – eco up! )
Granary@Nanking -> Settler

177
Another passionate turn, where the only noticable event was the coffee machine fill with water.

178
Forge@Akkad -> Heroic Epic ( go against pigswill’s advice – sorry )
Forge@Sippar -> LBow
Courthoust@Mari -> Theatre

179
Whip Library@Guangzhou – the production is so low there, I didn’t have enough patience to wait

180
Library@Guangzhou -> Garden

181
Another quiet turn – some GP born elsewhere... As usual...

182
After such a quiet set of turns, half-asleep, I had a cold shower coming up:

WHY? He isn’t even aggressive. Toku would be logical, but him? Is it just because of annoyed relationship we were going through?
Anyway, due to war Lib will have to wait:
(IT) Education -> Gunpowder
LBow@Sippar -> LBow
Drop research to 30% and upgrade coastal bowmen to LBows. Also, the warrior gets an axe in his hand @Babylon, just to look better and more nasty.
No one wants to enter the war with Washi, so we will have to deal alone with his INVADING FORCES. Here I’m so ashamed not to have taken the printscreen of this legendary assault – one cat and one chariot landed on pigs near Babylon!

183
Settler@Nanking -> Bowman
Worker@Shishan -> Bowman
LBow destroys Washi’s cat @75% probability ( surprise, surprise )

184
Washi’s chariot destroys the wounded LBow @Babylon
Heroic Epic built in Akkad, enabling us to pump LBows @ 1 per turn rate!
Forge@Shanghai -> Barracks
Axe destroys the remaining great invasion forces near Babylon. Too bad they pillaged the pig tile.

185
LBow @Akkad -> LBow
LBow@Sippar -> LBow ( does it sound like – god***m it we have no defense! Lets panic! )
Forge@Opis -> Axe
Bow@Nanking -> Forge
Theatre@Mari -> Barracks
End of the GA… Too bad that it doesn’t last forever.
Also, some dumb AI got Chitchen Itza just ONE TURN before us! It happened to me before with the GLight! For the next game, if you want some luck in your SG just don’t select me...
I decide to rush Gunpowder – due in 2 turns.
BTW, we settle a new nice spot in China :

186
As a consolation price, we get +/- 500 gold in Babylon. Start walls for defense.
LBow @Akkad -> LBow (thank you HE & Forge)
Barracks@Shanghai -> LBow
Barracks@Mari -> Bow
GSci settles what was missing @ Babylon :

187
(IT) Gunpowder->Liberalism
LBow@Shanghai -> Library
After a very very very very very very very ( etc. ) long waiting time :

I decide to go after Houston, before getting Washi into peace. It is OUR ISLAND!
Change LBow@Akkad -> Musket

188
Walls@Babylon -> Musket
Landed some great invasion force near Houston ( I tried to do better than Washi - did I achieve it ? )

They have a lone axe inside, but it’s on the hill. Unlike Washi, we know that, mighty as they are, they won't win by themselves. So lets wait for a better force strike.

189
We met Willem, the other Wonder-whore in this game. He seems pretty advanced (Cre&Fin – nice combo…) – Theo, Machinery, Compass… Trade Pig for 5GPT to get better relations and maybe trade techs. It doesn’t work…
But hey, we are 5 millions

190
LBow@Sippar -> Spy
Garden@Guangzhou -> Forge
Axe@Opis -> Worker (we have too little workforce on our mainland)
Bow@Shishen -> Theatre

191
Musket@Babylon -> Cat

192
Another turn full of action :
Lib@Shanghai -> Garden

193
Now things look better near Houston:

Overkill you might say. And you are right! Musket takes the lone axe @ 75% probability:

And Washi signs for peace, with one city and one island less.

194
GOTCHA 2!

No-brainer choice:
(IT) Liberalism -> Nationalism -> Military Tradition
You follow my options?
Cat@Babylon -> Theatre (going for Globe)
LBow@Akkad -> Theatre
GOTCHA number 3:

Sistine@Borsippa -> Tao Temple for happiness/culture
Spy@Sippar -> Theatre
Worker@Opis -> Theatre
Bow@Mari -> Library

195
Theatre@Akkad -> Tao Temple

196
Surya asks for us to get OR. We don’t see why we would refuse, with Sistine online, Sankoré in 5-6 turns, time to spread some faith everywhere and get religious! And it keeps our best friend even happier.
I take advantage of his great humor to do some deals: give Music for Compass, Sugar for Silk and Gem for Banana. Happy faces and health ahead!
Theatre@Babylon -> Tao Miss
Garden@Shanghai -> Tao Miss

197
Very quick turning in the known world – Toku declares us war, while Surya does the same to Washi. Toku lands a cat near Shishen.
Ha ha, said I, you can land here Toku, but you are dead with our NATIONHOOD! HAHAHA (devilish smile). I go to civic screen and…. WTH! We have to wait 5 turns thanks to Surya’s request to get OR!!! Well, hopefully Toku will be slow in his invasion…
Whip Forge@Nanking

198
Forge@Nanking -> Barracks
Toku’s invasion force annihilated (well, to be brief, one cat )

199
Tao Miss@Babylon -> Harbor (did I mention Compass ?)
Tao Temple@Borsippa -> Harbor
LBow@Shanghai -> Musket
Market@Dur -> Settler

200
Forge@Nippur -> Theatre
Theatre@Sippar -> Market
Theatre@Opis -> Courthouse
Barracks@Nanking -> Trireme
Failed to spread Tao in Nippur…

Toku was slow in invasion - 1 more turn to wait, and then Draft!

Are you still there guys ?

OK, let’s resume our situation.
Here are the cities:

It would be better, if we weren’t @ war. I’m globally confident in our eco.
Sankoré due in 1 turn in Beijing BTW. We got MoM in Akkad and Sistine in Borsippa during this turnset. Next objective – Taj Mahal (Borsippa ? Akkad ?)
Foreign advisor, or “Meet our friends Surya” screen:

Some techs in these days:

Demo looks ok, but GNP is rather low due to warring…

At last, take a look at the known world:

Sorry again for ‘epical’ style of narration – I try my best to limit it, it’s just difficult to limit myself.

Hope your games went well!

Cheers everyone!

We have some very different paths in this game, this round is looking very exciting. I fear, however, that due to the range of different states we are in our games, that the stats and comparisons won't do justice to our style of play. I will do the stats anyway, but I have 3 options for us to consider:

1. We play as usual, selecting one save this round to continue
2. We each continue our own games for another 30 turns
3. We choose 2 games to continue, 3 play one, the other 3 the other game

I'd be inclined to consider option 2 this round, since some of the games here need more time to develop, and then they might easily rival the current top games (or they might not, that's the whole point of this experiment...).

So, does playing another 30 turns each sound feasible?

3. We choose 2 games to continue, 3 play one, the other 3 the other game

I agree on either 1st or 2nd option.

The problem with the 2nd one is that our games will divert very very much, so it will be pretty hard to compare them.

Otherwise, I would give away my today's lunch ( of course if I wouldn't just have eaten it ) just to know what is pigswill plan in his game and how will he work it out during next 30 turns :crazyeye:
As for me, next 30 turns is ok - it will allow me to carry on my initial plan which is
Spoiler :
top secret :D
.
If we launch next 30 turns, I would ask to postpone the playing/reporting deadline until Saturday. There is not enough time for me to quality-play this turnset before friday :(

My rationale:
Spoiler :
I'm thinking that we'd be going for a conquest or pseudo-diplomatic victory. This means that I'd be looking to acquire several more overseas cities and my plan is to set up each conquest as a colony. The more cities acquired the more expensive it gets (I think) so I thought I'd start on the colonising early.
I'm not keen on Akkad as Heroic Epic city because its the Taoist Holy Cty. I'm hoping to eventually land a Prophet for a shrine in Akkad which would make Akkad the Wall Street city. Wall Street would combine well with Ironworks so I wanted a seperate HE/WP military pump.

Spoiler :

I see now where you plan to go ;)
I was thinking about Akkad as a HE/Ironworks city, forgot that in your game it was a Tao Holy City ( in mine it turned up in Borsippa ). :blush:
Going along your plan, it could be interesting to go after Divine Right and land another Holy City with another future shrine.
As for my plan, I hesitate between a Religious Domination game ( Tao spam + golden three - Sistine ( already in ), Sankoré ( in 1 turn ) and Spiral ( in the near future ) ) and Culture win ( Beijing, Borsippa & Akkad being the three cities to pump culture ).
Your pseudo-diplomatic plan may work well with your colonies ;)

Here's the stat's for the games so far. As you'll see, it's hard to compare Putchuco's game, since he is in a Golden Age, and pigswill has lost half his cities! Does a GA affect the GNP? If so, I'm wondering why I have such a large GNP. Might be due to Printing Press, which I always love getting early for the commerce boost.
pigswill, did you trade for Engineering or Paper? You discovered them the same turn, so I know you did for one of them!
Finally, I've left out the resources - I don't have that much time now (packing to go to Uni!).

SG Statistics for Round 6 (Preliminary)

I got Paper from Darius.

Looking through the stats my game is obviously weak at the moment, to the extent that I'm beginning to wonder if I did the right thing. I think that this was the right move (given my intended victory strategy) but its not going to really bear fruit for another 50 turns or so.

A golden age does affect GNP and Hammers.

Spoiler :

My goal for upcoming 30 turns was to strengthen our economy. I have decided to pop GS instead of using them for golden ages to get to liberalism as fast as possible.
On the way I tried to research these techs which would have biggest impact on our economy. Compass was a no-brainer since all our cities are coastal ones and we have GL.
When I got liberalism I waited for next GS to appear and used him for starting golden age. Once started I switched to Caste system for more great people, free religion for nice boost in happiness and research and free speach for commerce.
Everything was going smooth and according to plan, we are by far the most developed civ but Toku decided that he doesn't like me much and declared on me. He attacked with two catapults and two chariots, which died in the same turn thanks to our longbows :).
Toku can't really hurt us anywhere and I think, he looks like a potential next victim of our war machine.

Thanks for submitting your game, Erathelix. I've updated the stats with your game now. Once again, it becomes harder to compare your game, since you are in a Golden Age (which there is really no problem with -- don't worry!) - but you can readily compare your game to Putchuco's, since he is also in a GA.

Am I correct in assuming that you discovered Paper with a GS?

Spoiler something I forgot to mention about my game :
I have 2 Great People (Scientist, Merchant) which I left since we can start a Golden Age with them should my game be continued. I thought I'd leave them so you can decide the best plan - the Merchant could go overseas and get us money, but I don't think that's the best use of him at the moment. I like Golden Ages!! During the Golden Age, the Taj Mahal could be built to catapult us into a further 12 turns of a Golden Age...

Stats for Round 6 (not inc. asaegyn's game)

Just two things regarding my game - I got my Academy in Babylon & Heroic Epic in Akkad.

Otherwise, how did you manage such a GNP without being in GA jamesds ???:king:

Do we continue our games or vote as usual ?

Sorry pawelo, I'll change that in the next revision. I don't know why I missed your Academy, as for the Heroic Epic, the screen always says "Babylon", which is our Civ, and I sometimes take it for our Capital city... :rolleyes:. Your game was the first I processed, and I realised this in the next one and forgot to change yours.

As for my GNP, I guess it is a combination of many factors. I think I was quite similar to Erathelix, although I didn't switch to Free Religion for the +10% :science: bonus. I sent my Civ into a GA just to see what happened with the two Great People I mentioned I had above.

GNP : 794
Mfg. : 212

28 :gold: /turn
434 :science: /turn
36 :espionage: /turn
= 498/turn total

The University of Sankore will help with +4 of those beakers since I have 2 holy buildings I think.

For your final question, if that is OK for everybody, then we shall continue each of our games for another 30 turns. What does everybody think? If you don't quite like the idea, then vote and give a quick reason for your choice. asaegyn has unfortunately missed this round, if we continue, he can play 60 turns of his game.

So, everybody reply please: continue for 30 turns, or vote as usual?

So, everybody reply please: continue for 30 turns, or vote as usual?

Vote for continuing our games for another 30 turns.
I have something I would like to try ;) Also, I'm greatly impatient to look into next 30 turns in pigswill try.

:deal:

Am I correct in assuming that you discovered Paper with a GS?

Yup.

I would say we should go ahead and play another 30 turns with our own games. We have no base to compare the games right now. It feels like everyone is preparing for something big, and it would be nice to see what it was :)

Fine, lets just go ahead - continue your games for another 30 turns, and submit it by...hmm...how's Friday evening? Submit by Friday evening if possible, otherwise we'll push it to Sunday evening - I am moving to Uni on Saturday and won't be available that day, or most of Sunday. Hopefully I can get back on for Sunday evening, if not you guys can start the discussion then.

Now I'll continue my game..:D

wow
i missed a lot. but i played 60 turns,, and i've posted my save
unfortunately, i don't have an as detailed report as you guys, mainly because i was too into the game...

Spoiler :

Here are highlights - MoM built. I send the GS in the boat to Babylon and build an academy.

Chichen being built, three turns left, washington attacks us, lands a catapult and a chariot outside babylon.

i'd switched bosippur to a longbow 5 turns back, and he is on the way to babylon. change from Chich to lbow in Babylon

Basically take out washington's landing party at a cost of 1lbow, random event allows peace, i take it. Sury attacks washington a few turns later.

I don't settle the city north of Nanjing yet, my economy is ok, and i'm sure it'll be more of a burden than not for now.

I'm beelining towards liberalism.

... some demand from caesar, i refuse. meet Oranje, he's a bit behind us in tech and way away. do exploring with boats. can almost get circum nav bonus, but there are like 6 tiles of ocean.

... take liberalism to 1 turn away. everyone else is either missing paper or education, i decide to take a risk, and beeline towards democracy, so i can take that as the free tech.

start researching nationalism

pop a GM in Beijing, unsure what to do.

Chichen built far away, i don't mind as i don't really like the wonder, the 300 odd gold is nice. Start Borsippa on Uni of Sankore.

do a lot of building builds, whip whenever i can for 2 pop, eventually settle the north city, economy immediately takes a hit (goes from +12 to - 20gold/turn). reduce research to 50%

get nationalism, start Shanghai on Taj Mahal, start researching Constitution.

Sury asks me to attack washington, i've build 2 cats, 2 maces, 2xbows 3 spears and 3 lbows. i decide houston rightfully belongs to us, so i load up two galleys and land outside. it now has a lbow, 2 galleys and a worker inside.
after battering, at the cost of 2 cats and an xbow, i take the city.

Make peace with Washington as soon as i can.

a fwe non eventful turns pass. i notice toku has 3 galleys coming towards us on the northern shore. i check and he is in "we have enough...". i switch Nanjing to a unit, and upgrade the axes in the area to maces. upgrade bow in Nanjing to a lbow and send it up.

Too late, lose 1 city to Toku, but i think he wastes 5 units taking out the 1 mace (with CR3.... :( ). My mace and lbow reach next turn, take out the injured chariot and the city is ours again. Courthouse survives! Huzzah.

I was waiting for peace before burning merchant for golden age, but toku won't talk, and i am now 1 turn from finishing printing press (the last prereq for democ).. I burn the merchant.

Printing press in, i select liberalism. in, take democracy as free tech.. Do all the whipping i can, and switch from Slavery --> Emanc and Pagan --> Free Religion. No anarchy cuz of GA.

Great engineer born in Beijing. Slept him. Make a trade with Willelm : Education and 130 gold for Engineering and Compass. Trade Julius Philo for Hback riding and 100 gold. Trade Philo to whomever still doesn't have it for whatever gold they have.

Researched Guilds, and Banking. Got economics first, get free merchant. sleeping in Babylon. TAj built with 3 turns left in my turnset, so i'm still in golden age. Not sure what strat to go for now, i'm thinking beeline to biology to expand our econ even more. Though it might be better to catch up in military (maybe get assembly line), before.

Also, made a detour to Optics, built a caravel, got those last 6 ocean tiles and we have the circumnav bonus too.

Oh, also used GAge to switch to US.. Have a few unhappy faces, but i'm building missionaries, and with FR that should disappear once they spread religions.

To recap - building SoL, should have it in <10 turns. Great Merchant sleeping in Babylon. Great engineer sleeping in Beijing. Missionaries and some monasteries being built to make sure all of our cities are :) .
