Respect is earned, and this is the main reason why I do not get along with my parents, why I didn't get along with teachers, and why I refuse to enter the military. They all expect a given respect, something which I would refuse to give unless they earned it.

Not really. Colour Sergeant expects you to think he's a horrible, nasty man who doesn't know anything for the first few weeks while he's teaching you drill, and respect comes later once you realise that actually he displays all the values that you want to live up to and has all the skills that you want to have, and he's a decent bloke who cares for you and your mates and wants to make sure that you're properly trained so that you can do well once you enter your regiment. He does, however, demand that you do what he says, which doesn't require respect - as any military man will tell you.
 
Yes, but that doesn't stop him being a horrible, nasty man.
 
I respect everyone and no one. I attempt to give everyone empathy and positive regard in order to help achieve positive results for everyone - that's basically my job description in therapy.
