[RFC] Rome, the Conquering Empire

Civ4ScreenShot0089.jpg

Gaius Racchus was a tough but able commander; he had led legions under orders from Emperors both new and old for thirty long years, and now his final orders were to conquer the former Grecian lands before he could retire back in Roma with his wife and children and assume a position in the Senate. Racchus was oft believed to be a sadistic man, but reports from that time period were the polar opposite; indeed Racchus was said to be kinder than most Roman legion commanders. The seven thousand crucified Greek children was revealed to be a kinder fate as a diary stored in a library in Roma reveals that a conversation between General Racchus and two generals shows that the generals Publius and Patriarchius advocated half of the city crucified and three quarters of the population flayed alive respectively.

The Spartan Hegemony massed troops along the border of Rome and the newly arisen nation, but their attempts of attack on Athens would have been met with bloodshed of the highest order. It was later estimated by scholars that the death toll for the Spartans would have been around thirty thousand with less than five hundred Praetorian casualties. Luckily for the men and women of Sparte, they did attempt anything and draw Roma into a war.

For the moment.

The cowardly Ethiopian nation offered to become a protectorate of the Roman Empire. The Emperor himself weighed the options, then decided to accept the Ethiopian proposal, with Ethiopia becoming the Province of Aethiopia. Trade on a massive scale opened up between the two nations with this binding of power.

Word came from Iberia that the peoples who lived there, for a long time believed to be barbarians had formed a new nation. Their leader, Queen Isabel the First adopted Christianity as the state religion, and made contact with the Roman neighbors next door. Roma was cautious of this new people, they were not eager to open contact with a group of people who had long attacked and raided Roma's borders, but even so the Emperor opened contact.

Arabia declared war on Roma, the treachorous dogs who had hounded Aethiopia for many decades. With the Arabian Caliphate and the Roman Empire now at war, people readied for the attacks that were no doubt soon to come.

General Racchus led the assualt on Byzantion personally, leading his men through a breach in the wooden wall-palisade that the Greeks before the barbarians had constructed. The city fell without much resistence, the populace rising up to battle the barbarians and cast them out of the borders of the city.

Cities on the northern border of the Roman Empire declared their independence from the Roman Empire, attempting to free themselves from the Empire. Emperor Claudius advocated harsh response to the declaration, calling up soldiers from the south and the east to deal with this attempted rebellion.

A mandate from the Emperor opened up plenty of governmental jobs for people to run the micromanagement portions of the Empires needed functions. This created a job boom with close to one million jobs being created for low level functioning.

Soon the North would be drenched in the blood of fellow Romans fighting each other over land in Gaul and Germania. The war would rip apart many a family and friendship and cause civil strife unseen before in the Empire.

As you can tell, France has tried to rise up against us and we will crush the utter life out of them now. Roma enim! Gloria enim! Nam honor! Imperator! :mwaha:

Always agree to a flip!

The battle for Sparte was a massive affair, six full legions brought forth to rain hellfire down upon the settlement. General Racchus led them in this campaign to try to and smash the last Greek city state into submission before the might of Roma.

The first legion tossed at the gates of Sparte returned with more than four thousand casualities. The news was grim and black; the city was well defended by a massive garrison, one that would not break as the words described. Unbent. Unbroken. Unsworn.

The Greeks had set up a powerful defense, but they would be shattered by the might of the Legions. Racchus ordered no quarter to be given on any of the troops that Sparte was using to defend the city.

Spears assembled around the palace to defend the royal family from harm. They would not last the day.

The spearmen shattered under the continued attack of the Praetorian legions, cracking at the foundations as they tried desperately to hold the city.

Sparte, the last of the great Greek city states. Conquered. No longer would their words ring true. Unbent, Unbroken, Unsworn, Unleveled. Racchus was not interested in slaughtering the people of the last Greek city state; more trouble rested to the north in Gaul and Germania than hear in Grecia.

Don't kill France, please :( gift them all of your cities instead and make peace.

Make sure that your French cities are empty so that no unit would flip to them as the war goes on (until you send your units close to their territory).

The second I saw "some of your units may flip to the other side", I moved quite a few of them out of harm's way, but a few Praetorians flipped.

Unfortunately the game has all but ended, and France...

When your troops join the enemy always sucks. Otherwise, go for Egypt and try to stay out of Arabia's business.

Always refuse flips! Cities should never be given, only taken. The "some of our troops are joining the enemy" will continue to flash up every turn even if none of your troops are actually swapping sides, its just there to warn you to stay out of their core until 10 (i think) turns are passed. Best plan is to keep a few legions offshore in galleys, swoop them in when a coastal city is threatened, then get them back out to sea before they flip. I think that ships are immune to flipping.

There is nothing worse than French Praetorians and a stack of >30 units going against a garrison of less than five. Thank god I didn't try to settle England then.

Once I've established the city and built it up, I absolutely despise turning them over becuase of all the time and hammers i've invested.

Also, I am sincerely sorry for the lack of an update, but photobucket is rather slow after I loaded an excess of three thousand photos, so I've had a little trouble with it.

I would explain what Europe is like at the moment, but that would just ruin the surprise.

Well, I deleted the first album worth of pictures (2,500) so maybe it is a little late. They took up about.... 676MBs of space on the hardrive, and were slowing down the game.

Finishing up the new update now, photobucket keeps crashing on me.

French troops try to take the city in a flurry of war.

They are unsuccessful.

Praetorians march northward in order to try and quell the uprisings, while French troops mobilize quickly.

A Praetorian legion made up of Gaelic soldiers joins the French. The Emperor orders their deaths if they are captured.

Rheims is taken by France as Romans turn on Romans. The situation becomes dire enough that extra slaves are whipped up to make warriors for the depleted Roman armies. The betrayl is unprecedented in Roman history.

More French bastardi march southward to take lands that are rightfully Roman. The Emperor will not stand this, and dispatches multiple legionarries to deal with the issue.

A lone Roman legion holds it's ground, and in the end, only a single cohort made up of two hundred men survive the heavy fighting.
