THE SHOGUNATES OF JAPAN

Preface:
Religion is said to be the basis of civilization, and civilization the basis of religion. Nowhere is this truer than in Japan. When we go back through the ages we find the squabbling remnants of a once united civilization. What tore them apart? Religion is the simple answer. Many times before in the history of this Earth have great lands been torn apart by such petty things as the correct number of days it took the local deity to create the world. It is not very surprising, therefore, that Japan was even more divided than those great lands of the past. From China came three religions, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. They spread in Japan, and were the ultimate cause of the civil war that tore the Japanese Shogunate apart. In this book I hope to explore the history of Japan, all the way from squabbling Shogunates to overseas empire. I am glad you have decided to join me on my journey

Chapter 1: The Beginnings of Disunity
All civilization on Honshu is said to come from Kyoto. Recent evidence suggests that, indeed, Kyoto was the beginning of Japanese civilization. It is also believed by many that the next cities founded in Japan were founded by settlers from Kyoto. In fact, it is believed that Kyoto was the nerve center of the First Japanese Shogunate.

The Kyotoan Shogunate was believed to have flourished sometime around 600-700 AD. The lack of any calendars at the time is why no archeologist has managed to make anything other than a best guess. The Imperial Family resided in Kyoto, and their palace there was said to be the finest building in Japan. After the settling of Tokyo and Nagasaki the Shogun at the time, Yukiyomo Leyasudo, began construction on two galleys. They were christened Rising Sun and Kyoto Flower. They were not finished until his death.

His son, Makoyomo Leyasudo, took over as Shogun. During the first few years of his rule Buddhism spread to Nagasaki. Thinking that it would make his subjects in Nagasaki happy to have their religion officially recognized he announced that Buddhism was the State Religion. What he had not taken into account was that other religions would most likely spread into his lands. This was to be his downfall.

Within ten years of the adoption of Buddhism Confucianism and Taoism had spread in Kyoto and Tokyo respectively. The followers of those faiths were angered by the state religion and sought to change it to their religion. Makoyomo refused to listen to the representatives, however. This is the spark that ignited the proverbial powder keg.

In a year revolts and riots had taken over the Shogunate. The Family and the Shogun’s Personal Guards had retreated to Nagasaki, which still supported him, and left the governing of the empire to a man named Anada Tanaka. Anada was not up for the job of governing a two-thirds unsupportive empire. He recalled all troops to Kyoto. However, they refused to come. The garrisons in each city had been influenced by the religions there, and felt obligated to protect their adopted homes.

Anada dealt with this by simply NOT governing anything but Kyoto and the surrounding territory. The rioters in Tokyo formed the Tokyo Shogunate, and the Family in Nagasaki formed the True Shogunate of Kyoto.

That is how religion tore apart the Kyotoan Shogunate.

In the end three new Shogunates came out of the turmoil.

The True Shogunate of Kyoto, headed by the Family, and very traditionalist. They were the Buddhist Shogunate.
Spoiler :

The Tanakan Shogunate of Kyoto, headed by the Tanaka Clan, and very isolationist. They decided to use the Rising Sun and Kyoto Flower as trade ships.
Spoiler :

The Tokyo Shogunate, headed by the Nara Clan, and very progressive. Most powers lie not with the Shogun, but with the Advisory Council.
Spoiler :

Japan After the “Crackup.”
Spoiler :

The next chapters will discuss each state in detail. Then, we will continue with the history of Japan.

Also, I have decided to update The Shogunates and the Great War on an every other day basis. For example, I update Shogun today and GW tomorrow. I update Shogun in two days, GW in 3.

They're not blurry pictures either :p

Yukiyomo Leyasudo... Makoyomo Leyasudo...

Makoyomo refused to listen to the representatives... left the governing of the empire to... Tanaka

Nara Clan... very progressive
Hmmm, very reminiscent of another time but a similar place... ;)

Also, I see that you founded your Cities where you really wanted them to go in the Japanese Feud, in true isolationist fashion (holing up on your island :p).

Subbed, this looks like something I might enjoy.
