RFCEurope 1.1

I feel a bit strange creating this account just to ask one question but here goes. I was playing as the Arabs and have tried putting off researching Ferriers for as long as possible, because as soon as you do the Bedouin barbarians get Ghazis which are a real pain to defeat. They seem to spawn about once every other turn (on Viceroy!) and I was wondering if there was a way to make them not get Ghazis whilst I have them short of putting a troop on every single square in Arabia so they can't spawn?

I built Le Mezquita in Jerusalem/Al-Quds which was a boneheaded move of a completely avoidable nature which also screwed me over I guess. Maybe I'm just a bit of a novice, everyone else didn't seem to have a problem with them. In any case, you've made a great mod and many congratulations and thanks.

Hey, welcome to the forum! (even if you were lurking here for long ;))
All new feedbackers are greatly appreciated :)

You are right, currently Ghazis spawn right after you have access to farriers
Never occured to me that it might be a problem for anyone, since you can also have ghazis with that tech.
The goal is to make the early arabian game a little more eventful with those somewhat tougher barbs
Currently 2 barb horse archers/ghazis spawn for AI Arabia, while 5 for the human player (in 2 stacks)
I might reduce them, or change them not to be all ghazis even after farriers, if it's too annoying/hard this way

Also: If you own Alexandria or founded another city in Egypt, check the mercenary-screen. They have archer-mercs that stand a real chance against the ghazi when defending your cities.

Yep, Chep is also right
Medjays available in Egypt (nubian bowman mercs) are also great against Ghazis

I dont like adjustable difficulty. At a certain date ghazis should start to spawn. If you have invested in the Farrier tech you should be rewarded with easier combat. Or if not, you are gonna have a bad time.

Maybe I should provide numbers with my problem. At the dawn of the first crusade I have currently killed 38 horse archers, all barbarian bedouins. I tried another game to test if this wasn't just a one time thing and researched farriers that time, more as a test (and so I didn't expand at all, I only had troops outside Jerusalem) at the same time (1098) I had killed 15 horse archers and 18 ghazis. Similarly, if I load a save in 1230 I have killed 48 horse archers. So there isn't that much of tailoff of them coming. I thought they might have let up a bit and got bored of trying to sack Jerusalem for 600 years, but still they come.

These numbers don't really tally with your 5 barbarians which is what prompted my reply. Thank you for yours.

I meant 5 barbarians every 8-10 turns on average
2 or 3 at any turn, not all 5 at once

Thank you, I understand now. I looked at the Barbs.py file and I think I know what it says. The annotations are actually quite nice and clear, which aided me greatly, I've never looked at python code before. I now only wonder why they last from 700AD to 1300AD, no other set of barbarians seems to last as long. I could change it in my own file if I liked I guess.

Should I found the Genoese capital on the spot or move to an island?

I prefer on the spot + capture barbarian/indie Milan and Firenze with cats+swords. But you will need to produce a lot of military (UU arbalestiers, then later knights) + walls + castles to deter an attacking Venezia or Germany. Also pay tributes to anyone if they ask. You will need these core cities for UHV#3.

I've had some good results with La Spezia as capital. It has access to fresh water, so commerce and growth is good. I ususally try to raze Firenze and found Siena on the coast instead. And I keep my hands off Milan. France, Burgundy and especially Germany will eventuall steamroll you if you take it.

Since it has access to fresh water, I guess somewhere along the rivers? North or east.

I'd like to report a minor bug:

Conquered/Not Yet should probably go under the 2nd UHV.

SVN #1064

Does anyone experienced this with other civs' UHVs too?
I swapped the order of some UHVs a couple commits ago, it's possible that I forgot some other parts as well

I don't really mind moving it to a fix date instead of the research of Farriers
What do you think would be a good date for switching from barb HAs to barb Ghazis?

@Merijn
Why did you change back Palacio de Pena into Paco de Ribeira?
The art is clearly for Palacio de Pena

Because I discovered that the Palacio da Pena isn't in the timeframe of the mod. During the timeframe of this mod, it was only a monastery with a little importance. (Surely not enough to be a wonder)

The construction of the palace as we know it didn't begin before 1842. Which is obviously after our timeframe. (And before the construction, it was ruins because of lightning and an severe earthquake)

So the Palacio da Pena is removed for accuracy. I didn't change they art because I don't have anything suitable yet. And before the Ribeira was changed to the Palacio, we also used the Palacio's art for the Ribeira, so I couldn't use that one.
But now you mention it, I did forget to change back the button.

Yeah, I was aware of that
Actually I planned to leave the Palacio da Pena as a late-game wonder, while adding back the Paco da Ribeira as a new wonder when we find suitable art
I would prefer the Palacio da Pena to stay (at the very end of the tech tree), even if it's somewhat out of timeframe
I think the art is great, horchland made a wonderful job. Would be shame not to use it

If the art wasn't so great, I think I would object against the late game idea. But I like the art so much I don't mind.

What would it bonus be? I think the no-anarchy bonus should go to the Ribeira, otherwise that bonus will come to late IMO. I was thinking of a very generic bonus, like a free golden age or some free specialists.

Now we speaking of wonders, a while ago, some other suggestions for new wonders were made. We may want to think of a bonus for them.
2 Other wonders suggested a few posts later are the Golden Gate of Kiev and the Archivo General de Indias in Sevilla.
IIRC, there was a discussion for wonder idea that you get GG points for fighting barbarians. That one could be give to the Golden Gate of Kiev.
The Archinvo General de Indias should have something colony related.

But let's take this discussion to it's own thread.
