HARTFORD, Conn. - Trying to defuse a crisis that could give the GOP a powerful opening, Democratic Senate candidate Richard Blumenthal said Tuesday that he "misspoke" in claiming more than once that he served in Vietnam, and he dismissed the furor as a matter of "a few misplaced words."

At a news conference where he surrounded himself with veterans, the Connecticut attorney general and far-and-away front-runner to replace retiring Democrat Christopher Dodd said he meant to say he served "during" Vietnam instead of "in" Vietnam. He said the statements were "totally unintentional" errors that occurred only a few times out of hundreds of public appearances.

Democrats in Connecticut and Washington stood by Blumenthal, and neither party said the incident was enough to instantly sink his candidacy. But the controversy raised Republican hopes of taking a seemingly safe seat away from the Democrats and reducing their Senate majority.

"On a few occasions, I have misspoken about my service and I regret that. And I take full responsibility," said Blumenthal, a trim, square-jawed figure with the bearing of a military man. "But I will not allow anyone to take a few misplaced words and impugn my record of service to our country."

The crisis erupted when The New York Times reported that Blumenthal had repeatedly distorted his military service. The story included quotations and a video of Blumenthal saying at a 2008 event that he had "served in Vietnam." The newspaper also said Blumenthal intimated more than once that he was a victim of the abuse heaped on Vietnam veterans upon their return home.

At a veterans event in Shelton, Conn., for example, he said, "When we returned from Vietnam, I remember the taunts, the verbal and even physical abuse we encountered," according to a 2008 Connecticut Post story.

Blumenthal, 64, joined the Marine Reserve in 1970 and served six years, none of it overseas. He put in much of his time in Washington, where he took part in such projects as fixing a campground and working on a Toys for Tots drive, according to the Times.

He received at least five military deferments that enabled him to stay out of the war between 1965 and 1970, during which time he went to Harvard, studied in England and landed a job in the Nixon White House. Once he secured a spot in the Marine Reserve, he had almost no chance of being sent to Vietnam, the newspaper reported.

One of Blumenthal's Republican opponents, former WWE wrestling executive Linda McMahon, claimed to have given video of the Norwalk event to the Times after more than two months of "deep, persistent" research.

The Times refused to comment on its sources.

This guy has been selling himself as a Vietnam vet for awhile now, and he is trying to say he 'misspoke' in regards to it?

Are you friggin kidding me?

Thats one cardinal rule of politics for the last 40 years or so is that you dont lie about service in Vietnam. Either you did...or you didnt. And nary the twain shall meet.

I hope this guy gets dumped for the liar he is.

Anyone from Conn able to comment on this? Whats the feeling locally? I read where it practically changed things there in that race overnight.

Yeah, lying politicians are a problem:

Eight-term Rep. Mark Souder will announce his resignation Tuesday after it came to light that he was conducting an affair with a female aide who worked in his district office, Fox News has learned.

Multiple senior House sources indicated that the extent of the affair with the 45-year-old staffer would have landed Souder before the House Ethics Committee.

Elected as a family values conservative as part of the Republican revolution in 1994, Souder survived a tough re-election
challenge in 2008 and survived a contested primary two weeks ago.

While the rumors had been flying, Souder claimed that he was at home tending to his ill wife.

All the way through his election, Souder tried to knock down the affair story, calling it revenge politics at play

And hiding behind an ill wife? Does this guy think he is in the same league as John Edwards, Newt Gingrich, or John McCain?

The staffer was some lady that the Congressman did abstinance only videos with, so maybe he can go on a lecture tour with Bristol Palin or something.

There is already a thread for Souder. This one isnt it.

But at least Souder owned up to it and resigned....this liar from Conneticutt is trying to say he 'misspoke' and thats just crazy.

Attorney general Richard Blumenthal stood surrounded by veterans on Tuesday afternoon to address a newspaper report that he falsely led people to believe he had served in Vietnam, and said he regrets misspeaking.

“On a few occasions, I have misspoken about my service and I regret that. I take full responsibility, but I will not allow anyone to take a few misplaced words and impugn my record of service,” he said.

Blumenthal said he was not aware of his “misplaced words” when he spoke them.

Blumenthal took questions after making his statements.

“I may have misspoken. I did misspeak on a few occasions out of hundreds I have attended,” he said.

When a reporter asked him why he did not correct the record when it was reported that he served in Vietnam, Blumenthal said there are many reports and journalists sometimes make mistakes.

“I can't be held responsible for all the articles. I might not have seen them,” he said. “Sometimes journalists make mistakes.”

When asked if he should apologize, the veterans there in his support said "no" again and again. To with he responded that he regrets his misplaced words.

He said he volunteered to join the U.S. Marine Corp Reserves 40 years ago, and received no special treatment

“I joined the Reserves by picking up the phone and signing up,” he said. “Unlike many of my peers, I chose to sign up.”

He said he served six years, reached the ranks of sergeant and was honorable discharged.

This will hurt him. Hard to say how much yet.

Souder owned up to it after lying for a significant amount of time. Blumenthal was wrong here and he is handling the response wrong.

What a douche-bag...
I hope he tanks.

It reminds me of GWB lying about his own "service" and then covering it all up. Of course, the far-right continues to deny this...

Jesus, can we cut the Democratic shill crap for awhile guys?

Talk about credibility issues.

Hopefully the Dems can replace him on the ballot before Friday. They have a deep bench.

Are you friggin kidding me?

Anyone want to reserrect some of Mobboss old threads defending Bush, Rumsfield, Wolfweitz ? With mispoken, taken out of context and I dont recall, I dont recall, I dont recall.

Seriously though NYT broke the story and did a more balanced article pointing out several qualifiers in which Blumenthal specificly stated he did NOT serve in vietnam. Dont worry If Republicans can re-elect Stanford(R), Craig(R), Vitter(R), Iam sure Democrates can reelect Blumenthal(D)

I don't think so. Despite this, Blumenthal is very popular. And the Democratic bench in the state is not deep. There isn't another Democrat with his name recognition and support. Not since Lieberman moved out and Dodd's been discredited. The Dems in Congress that have been their the longest, Larson and DeLauro, are not hugely known outside their own districts. The other Reps are hardly known at all. The most prominent Democrat in the state right now is Lamont, and he has never held office, and is currently running for governor. No one in the state legislature is well known or has deep support. The main candidate for Blumenthal's current post as attorney general, Bysiewicz, has blown her campaign and has probably ended her political career. A few of the city mayors try to run for state office, but just aren't well known other than locally. And that, essentially, leaves no more prominent Dems in Connecticut.

Yeah, I was kind of startled when I saw this. Blumenthal's an old hand in Connecticut Democratic circles. Man's been wanting a seat for the last ten years or so, but when Lieberman didn't move into the VP's office, he wasn't willing to bite the bullet and run in a competitive primary. In retrospect, that probably should have been a bad sign, but I took him for the unadventurous sort, not this kind of stupid/desperate stuff.

Connecticut primaries are mid-August, and as DT said, the Democrats have plenty of people they can run. I expect some polling on the matter, to see how badly this effects Blumenthal, then you'll probably see a good challenger or two within a week. I'm not overly familiar with Connecticut politics, but I've heard the name of Rep. Chris Murphy tossed around a few times. He's essentially a generic dem in terms of name recognition, but he's got cash and an organization.

And no, this doesn't really match up well with Bush's service issues. The President misrepresented his service, which is wrong, but not awful, and tricky to prove. Blumenthal told a bold faced "Sniper fire in Bosnia" lie.

I wonder if it's a big enough swing to cost him the election. Currently he's leading, but not by much. Even a 5 point swing would put McMahon on top. That would be pretty hilarious.

At least he was having sex with a woman. That's better then half of the GOP cheaters caught in recent years. ;)

Probably been mentioned by now, but I'm not going to read through the thread.

MobBoss, where was your thread about Bush dodging the draft and being sheltered by his politically connected daddy in the ANG?

misspoke? a mistake?

what, he didnt say he was misunderstood and in fact said... "i swerved in with name"? or something equally nonsensical?

jesus, this guy could really learn from austrian politicians.
