Riddle of Ages: Travelling Through History

is it the German cruiser Admiral Graf Spee?
in the Battle of the River Plate?

Within five in distance,
In time
And in direction
The enemy was,
He said.

Five seamiles/hours and at five o'clock? At GMT +5 or -5?
The lady nearly died
Before her time,
But she pulled a Jesus

Is something like 'She seemed to have died, but was still alive'
And she won
At a too high cost.

It isn't a loss, but it isn't a real victory either.
Milarqui, can you give a small hint? And are we right about ships?

"the lady" could also be a hint as to the name of the ship; La Dame or something?

Could be the Battle of Trafalgar, 'a too high cost' being Nelson's death?

It was just a stab in the dark. I guess the 'lady' would have been the Victory, since that comes from a battle, if not the name of a battle. :/

Clue: the name of the ship comes from a battle.

hmmm... come on brain, do something or I'll stop access of oxygen.... wait.. that's not smart :p

And why is no one thinking about the first half of the riddle?

I am... and so is Strijder... but I haven't come farther than what he said... I'm working on it ;)

^ Why doesn't it surprise me that the guy with that avatar posts two American ships :lol:
Care to give some explanation about the number five? The Japanese indeed thought the Yorktown had sunk, while she was still floating, but I can't see the link with 5.

Sorry for the double post, but a revelation has hit me.

USS Yorktown at the Battle of Midway.

Correct. Now, the explanations.

Within five in distance,
In time
And in direction
The enemy was,
He said.

HYPO (the Navy Intelligence Office in Hawaii in charge of monitoring enemy radio transmissions) had detected that the Japanese would attack Midway. Nimitz asked Layton where he could venture the Japanese would come from. Layton said they would be spotted first at 175 miles from Midway, at 6:00 AM, from the northwest with a bearing of 325 degrees. A message came a little before 6:00 AM, stating that the Japanese ships had been detected at 180 miles from Midway with a bearing of 320 degrees. Nimitz joked that Layton had only been five minutes, five degrees and five miles out. So, he said that the enemy was detected within a range of five miles (in distance), five minutes (in time) and five degrees (in direction).

The lady nearly died
Before her time,
But she pulled a Jesus
And she won
At a too high cost.

The lady is, indeed, the USS Yorktown. During the Battle of the Coral Sea, the USS Yorktown was hit and heavily damaged, which made the Japanese believe they had sunk it (The lady nearly died/Before her time). However, she managed to return on its own to Hawaii, and in less than three days, she was restored to nearly maximum battle capacity (But she pulled a Jesus). USS Yorktown became a fundamental piece in the Allied plans for the Battle of Midway (And she won) but was sunk during said battle (At a too high cost).

It's your call now, Buddhafish.

Alrighty then. I was unsure about the 5's, but as I was looking up a couple things, I saw that Midway was fought on June 4, 5, 6, and 7, 1942. And the Yorktown's US naval classifiacation was CV-5. It all works out though.

Now let's see................

A man with a dream
could've helped set me free
but from where I sit
grey is all I see.
Across the Delaware my namesake rode,
them more advanced than my home's ancestry.
In their fight to take down a common foe,
where there was light for all to see.
