The thing is, even if you're utterly misanthropic and don't care in the least bit whether poor people have access to medical treatment, there are still economic reasons for universal healthcare -- i.e. it's much cheaper than insurance-based systems. Not only is there a wealth of evidence from all over the world of this fact, but there is a sound theoretical basis for it as well (i.e. it's not just a coincidence).

Further, a healthy population is a productive population. The hidden costs of poor healthcare (i.e. lost productivity due to sickness, shorter life-spans and ill-health) aren't captured by the market -- surely the government ought to step in here?

But anyway that's another thread.

The left wing here are the progressives. He would be a moderate democrat at the most. If you don't support universal healthcare, you're probably not a leftist by US standards. Centrist by US standards and center-right by universal standards.

i dont know of any european centre-rights who want to privatise health care.
it's pretty right wing.

Well, the centre-right Tories (that is, the political party, rather than its voters) in the UK would privatise the NHS if the entire body of public opinion wasn't against it. Thatcher's cuts made any mention of "cuts to public services", and especially institutions such as the NHS, into an instant election failure, so the Tories instead talk about "part-privatisation" and "offering greater choice and flexibility in healthcare".

so if their stance is far to the right of the public opinion, how can you call them centre-right?

According to Political Compass, the Tories are pretty far to the right.

I'd say, based on this, that the LibDems were centre-right.

they neither want to preserve the status quo nor revert back to some old status (health insurance in britain never existed in a private form.)

i have a hard time calling that conservative.
Well you're free to call them whatever you want, but they are actually called the Conservative party, and they are a centre-right party in the UK :p

Mmm yes well that's why nobody bases anything on that ridiculous chart.

Yeah. Since when are my politics anywhere within lightyears of those BNP fools?

Geez everybody, I was only using the only concrete example that was in image form that I could think of :(

Also, it's kinda funny that though CFC has a reputation for being very leftist that only slightly more than 50% are. Then again, there is a "not your business" option.

Dude, there are 53% of leftists versus 23% of rightists. This is commieland.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT LEFTISTS AND RIGHTISTS

Rightest think they be surrounded by leftists, leftists think they be surrounded by rightists, leftists think the media is rightist, rightists think the media is leftist, leftists think everyone doesn't know what leftism is, rightists think everyone doesn't know what rightism is, and everyone is annoyed by so-called independents and centrists who are really usually leftists (if you're a rightist) or rightists (if you're a leftist). And both leftists and rightists think the preceeding paragraph doesn't apply to them specifically, even if it applies to most leftists and rightists (or at least, leftists and rightists of the "not really leftist/rightist" sort).

@ Fifty:
Don't you ever do this sort of thing again in any of my threads.
For old times sakes you get this one chance of warning, if you repeat it you will get reported pronto.
And frankly, I am disappointed in you, to use an understatement.

So I said what I said using a weird font, but what in it isn't true?

Note that I did not say that any one of leftists or rightists weren't correct. Maybe one or the other is correct in its claims. The point is that each often seems to take the positions I stated! And surely such a comment is relevant to the topic!

My apologies for double post, but you dropped in just while I wrote the first one;
If we stand with Richard Cribb(former lucrefarul), such a statistics surely indicates communism.
Given the absurdity in this sentence, I am not surprised by the least that you managed to mangle my former nick.
