The thing is, even if you're utterly misanthropic and don't care in the least bit whether poor people have access to medical treatment, there are still economic reasons for universal healthcare -- i.e. it's much cheaper than insurance-based systems. Not only is there a wealth of evidence from all over the world of this fact, but there is a sound theoretical basis for it as well (i.e. it's not just a coincidence).
Further, a healthy population is a productive population. The hidden costs of poor healthcare (i.e. lost productivity due to sickness, shorter life-spans and ill-health) aren't captured by the market -- surely the government ought to step in here?
